Meet the 7-year-old Australian golfer who could play in the FedEx St. Jude Championship one day
The year is 2040, or thereabouts. Memphis' annual PGA Tour event − which may or may not still be going by its current name, the FedEx St. Jude Championship − is still going strong. Leading the field is Riaan Ayoobi, a young Australian with a pure stroke and an unbridled love of the game. It's a poetic, full-circle moment for Riaan. A pseudo-homecoming of sorts. Because, in 2025, then 7 years old, Riaan saw his first PGA Tour event in person at TPC Southwind. Already an accomplished youth golfer, Riaan's visit to Memphis with his mother and father only further cultivated his already ambitious dreams of professional golf stardom. Of course, it's impossible to forecast whether things will play out that way for Riaan. But for everything the FedEx St. Jude Championship stands for (locally, nationally and globally), it also gives youngsters like Riaan a tangible connection to the game − one that could serve as a spark. Or, one that could illustrate to them a reasonable bridge from where they are to where they want to be. "I love it, because it's fun," Riaan said Aug. 8. With his father, Shadab, by his side by the 18th green, Riaan told stories of the golfers he met the day before. Scottie Scheffler. Tommy Fleetwood. Rickie Fowler. Fellow Australians Jason Day, Cam Davis and Min Woo Lee. A true student of the game, Riaan proudly proclaimed that Scheffler, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player are his four favorites. Riaan posed for a photo at Scottie Scheffler's Chicken Shack − the "Happy Gilmore 2"-themed concession stand. In all, he rubbed elbows with more than 50 of the 69 golfers in Memphis this week. The only reason Riaan made the trip to the Bluff City is because he and his family were already in the United States for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, a tournament that was played at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. Riaan, who is a member of Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Victoria, placed 44th out of 105 at the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship. He placed 22nd at the same event in 2024. He has a 33-handicap and has developed a voracious appetite for the game. One that has been plenty satiated during his time in Memphis. His father says Riaan is on the course "morning to evening" every Saturday and Sunday. But Shadab isn't quite ready to start picturing his young son playing among the greats down the road. "I don't know, it depends on him and how he does as he gets older," said Shadab. "He has that setup, that support around him, but I don't know, when he's 14, what he does." But, undoubtedly like many of the kids who show up in Memphis each year, Riaan is full of confidence that it will be him aiming for birdies at TPC Southwind eventually. "I started playing when I was maybe 3 (years old) with plastic clubs around the house," he said. "I'm having so much fun. I will be back." Reach sports writer Jason Munz at follow him @munzly on X.

Shadab Khan likely to miss Asia Cup 2025 due to injury
Pakistan vice-captain Shadab Khan is unlikely to feature in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 as he continues to recuperate from a shoulder injury sustained earlier this year. The 26-year-old all-rounder underwent surgery in the United Kingdom earlier in July after aggravating the issue that had already ruled him out of Pakistan's recent T20I assignments against Bangladesh and the ongoing West Indies tour. It is estimated that Shadab will require a minimum of three months to achieve full fitness, making a return before October improbable. This timeframe effectively sidelines him from the Asia Cup, which is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28. Read more: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not yet confirmed any replacement for the T20 vice-captaincy. During the recent series against Bangladesh, no deputy was named in Shadab's absence, and the squad currently touring the Caribbean also lacks a designated second-in-command to stand-in skipper Salman Ali Agha. An official update on Shadab's rehabilitation timeline has yet to be released by the PCB. Meanwhile, the Asian Cricket Council has confirmed the tournament schedule, with Pakistan set to begin their campaign against Oman on September 12. A highly anticipated clash with rivals India is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai. This year's edition of the Asia Cup will be contested in the T20 format, acting as a preparatory event for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The tournament will feature eight sides split across two groups. Group A includes Pakistan, India, UAE and Oman, while Group B features Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. The event will open with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong on September 9, with the final set for September 28. Should Pakistan and India advance to the Super Four stage, a second showdown between the two could potentially happen on September 21.

Old phone helps Hyderabad police identify skeleton of man who died in 2015
Hyderabad: In what could pass off as a scene straight out of a television crime thriller, Hyderabad police on Monday solved the mystery around a partially retrieved skeleton using an old mobile phone found lying 'dead' near the remains. The 84 missed calls from friends and family on the phone, once activated, helped cops piece the puzzle together and establish that the remains were of 55-year-old Ameer Khan who went missing in 2015. The hair-raising adventure unfolded at an abandoned house in the Nampally market area where Ameer lived alone. He was the third of Muneer Khan's 10 children who died in 2013. While his youngest son, Shadab, inherited the house and several shops in the same building it was Ameer — unmarried and unemployed — who lived there by himself. In May 2015, he disappeared from public view when he stopped leaving the house and locked the doors from inside. 'Shadab collected rent from the shops in the building, but he or any other family member never attempted to open the house. No one reported to the police about the missing family member either.' His remains were recovered only on Monday when local boys playing cricket jumped over the compound wall to retrieve a lost ball. 'One of them entered the abandoned, overgrown house, and was hit by an overpowering stench emanating from the kitchen area. The kid then found the skeletal remains, recorded a video of it and shared it on WhatsApp with other friends,' said T Purushotham Rao, inspector, Habeeb Nagar At around 12:30 pm, police were alerted by locals about the remains. Chandra Mohan, DCP, south west zone reached the scene and summoned the forensic team. Cops found that the lower half of the remains, covered in mud on the kitchen floor, had shorts on them. Shadab told the informed police that the victim could be his elder brother, Ameer Khan. Initially, police were uncertain about the identity. But then they found a cell phone near the kitchen. 'It was an old phone and the battery was dead. We contacted a local phone shop and got a charger. To our surprise, the phone's battery turned on, and we saw 84 missed calls in May 2015 from Ameer Khan's acquaintances and family members. The victim's identity was confirmed,' the ACP said, adding, 'We suspect he might have died of ill health. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday.'
