Shadab Khan likely to miss Asia Cup 2025 due to injury

Express Tribune28-07-2025
Pakistan vice-captain Shadab Khan is unlikely to feature in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 as he continues to recuperate from a shoulder injury sustained earlier this year.
The 26-year-old all-rounder underwent surgery in the United Kingdom earlier in July after aggravating the issue that had already ruled him out of Pakistan's recent T20I assignments against Bangladesh and the ongoing West Indies tour.
It is estimated that Shadab will require a minimum of three months to achieve full fitness, making a return before October improbable.
This timeframe effectively sidelines him from the Asia Cup, which is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not yet confirmed any replacement for the T20 vice-captaincy.
During the recent series against Bangladesh, no deputy was named in Shadab's absence, and the squad currently touring the Caribbean also lacks a designated second-in-command to stand-in skipper Salman Ali Agha.
An official update on Shadab's rehabilitation timeline has yet to be released by the PCB.
Meanwhile, the Asian Cricket Council has confirmed the tournament schedule, with Pakistan set to begin their campaign against Oman on September 12. A highly anticipated clash with rivals India is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai.
This year's edition of the Asia Cup will be contested in the T20 format, acting as a preparatory event for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
The tournament will feature eight sides split across two groups. Group A includes Pakistan, India, UAE and Oman, while Group B features Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong.
The event will open with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong on September 9, with the final set for September 28.
Should Pakistan and India advance to the Super Four stage, a second showdown between the two could potentially happen on September 21.

Babar likely to make T20I comeback

Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam is being considered for a return to the national squad ahead of the upcoming tri-series and Asia Cup 2025, as doubts grow over Fakhar Zaman's fitness. Fakhar sustained hamstring injury during the T20I series against the West Indies. Due to the injury, he has already been ruled out of both the T20I and ODI series against the Caribbean side. Following the injury, the PCB has already directed Fakhar to report immediately to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where he will undergo rehabilitation. Fakhar's availability for the Asia Cup remains uncertain. Reports suggest that the board is closely monitoring his injury and the rehab phase, but also preparing contingency plans. According to reports, if Fakhar does not regain full fitness in time, Babar is a strong contender likely to be brought back into the squad. However, Babar's return to the Pakistan team for the Asia Cup is contingent on his performance in the ODI series against the West Indies. If he managed to impress the selectors with his performance, it could pave the way for his comeback to the national team. Notably, Babar recently met with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi alongside Mohammad Rizwan and Naseem Shah during the sideline of the second T20I against West Indies. Latif casts doubt over Pakistan's chances against India

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has voiced concerns over Pakistan's ability to challenge India in their much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025 clash on September 14, pointing to recent inconsistent performances and a lack of clarity in team strategy. In an interview with an Indian news agency, Latif reflected on Pakistan's recent defeats against Bangladesh and West Indies—teams they were expected to beat—highlighting the daunting task of facing a strong Indian lineup. "Facing India on September 14 will be a major challenge for Pakistan. I just hope the Asia Cup proceeds smoothly without any issues," said Latif, stressing the need for stability in the tournament and the team. The former wicketkeeper batter also offered a candid assessment of the team's current struggles. "Our cricket is inconsistent we lost to Bangladesh and the West Indies in matches we should never have lost," he said. "Our captain may be good, but juggling all three formats isn't easy. We have the talent, but we're not making the right decisions yet." Pakistan's preparations for the Asia Cup have been under scrutiny following a surprise 2-1 T20I series loss to Bangladesh. However, the Men in Green regained some momentum by securing a 2-1 series win against the West Indies. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) recently unveiled the full schedule for the Men's Asia Cup 2025, set to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament, played in the T20 format, will serve as a vital preparatory event for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka next February. Eight teams will participate in the tournament, divided into two groups. Group A features arch-rivals Pakistan and India, along with UAE and Oman. Group B includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong. The tournament will kick off on September 9 with a curtain-raiser between Afghanistan and Hong Kong. Pakistan will open their campaign against Oman on September 12 before locking horns with India on September 14. Their final group-stage fixture is against hosts UAE on September 17. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Four stage, with a potential second clash between Pakistan and India scheduled for September 21. The top two sides from the Super Four will progress to the final, slated to be held on September 28.
