‘Depressing': Alliance councillor hits out at anti-immigrant graffiti at east Belfast square
Those responsible for graffiti on the wall at an east Belfast square targeting asylum seekers should be 'ashamed', an Alliance Party councillor has said.
The message scrawled onto a wall alongside crudely painted crosshairs at CS Lewis Square close to the Newtownards Road reads: 'Asylum seekers will be dealt with'.
Alliance Party councillor Peter McReynolds said the message had been reported to police.
"Depressing to see this kind of graffiti appearing near CS Lewis Square in East Belfast, especially in what is a positive and inclusive space,' he posted on his X account.
'I've reported it and it will be removed. Those who did this should be ashamed of themselves.'

The square is named after the renowned Belfast-born author of the Chronicles of Narnia and features seven bronze sculptures from 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe', including Aslan, The White Witch, Mr Tumnus, The Beavers, The Robin and The Stone Table.
The PSNI has been approached for comment.
In recent months, a number of anti-immigration protests and rallies have been held in the square, which has also featured in videos posted by social media accounts showing people engaged in vigilante-style activity.
Last week, TikTok took action to ban a number of accounts linked to the activity.
The @irishbreedulsterr handle, which belonged to the Irish Bred Ulster Rared TikTok account, had amassed more than 19,500 followers and over 116,000 likes before it was banned from the platform.
Videos showing individuals aggressively confronting members of ethnic minority communities were being posted on the account until Monday evening.
Anyone trying to access the account is now met with a message informing them the account is banned.
'The account irishbreedulsterr is no longer available,' the message adds.
The PSNI has distanced themselves from those involved, labelling the activity as 'racism pure and simple'.
Members of the group had suggested on social media that they had been working closely with the PSNI, claiming officers have publicly 'thanked them' in the past.
In response, the PSNI released a statement saying: 'Such activity is not protecting this community, it is attempting to control it. It is racism pure and simple.'
Last week, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly also condemned the behaviour.
"Any vigilantism is wrong. It must be condemned. It has no place in Northern Ireland,' she said.

On Sunday, masked intruders allegedly stabbed a young, Melbourne father in the head and face at his home in the well-to-do suburb Kew East. The 39-year-old, his wife, and their children were sleeping at the property when five thugs allegedly forced their way into the home. A 39-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the face in the home invasion, before three were charged with a string of offences (pictured, the East Kew home) They dragged the father and mother into separate rooms, before the 39-year-old began to fight back. He was stabbed multiple times in the 'head, face, and arms,' police said. The mother was forced into a bedroom with her two young children while the 39-year-old was set upon. The children's grandparents, who were also in the home, were injured after trying to come to the man's aid. The 39-year-old was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, his wife was treated for cuts and bruises, while the children, two and three, were unharmed. The grandparents, aged 69 and 70, were also caught up in the chaos and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A fifth adult in the house escaped without physical harm. Four of the masked offenders allegedly fled in the victim's luxury BMW, while a fifth allegedly escaped in the car they had arrived in. A 24-year-old man and two teenagers, aged just 16 and 17, were charged with a string of offences, including aggravated home invasion, intentionally causing serious injury, and false imprisonment.

My father had a severe stroke so I have taken over his finances to manage his bills... NAB has done the unthinkable and now I'm furious
A woman has slammed one of the Big Four banks, claiming she was blocked from accessing her elderly father's account despite having enduring power of attorney. Andrea Fox claimed NAB cut her access to her father's bank account and accused the finance giant of holding his funds 'hostage'. Ms Fox has spent more than four years caring for her father's finances, including bills and rates, after he suffered a severe stroke. 'They locked me out of net banking and they put a hold on my dad's account which means that I cannot access his net banking at all,' she said in a TikTok. 'I cannot access his funds, which means I can't pay his bills for him.' Ms Fox's access to the account had been flagged by the bank's fraud department 'I spent an hour and a half on the phone with the bank. They basically treated me like a criminal, like I was trying to scam my father's money,' she said. After the long phone call, Ms Fox was eventually told she would need to attend an NAB branch in-person to resolve the issue. However, even after verifying Ms Fox's identity and seeing documents detailing her enduring power of attorney (EPOA), which legally appointed her to manage her father's finances, the bank seemed unwilling to help. 'They said they couldn't do anything about the bank block because the fraud department had put a hold on the account and stopped me from accessing that money,' Ms Fox said. 'They said it could be up to 30 days before they reinstate my access to dad's account. 'But guess what? I just got his pharmacy bill for his medication from the nursing home. I just got his rates notice. 'What did they say? "You can go into the bank branch and have that bill paid for you because we won't be reinstating your bank access". 'To say that I'm frustrated is beyond it. I went into that bank, trying to get something really simple sorted out, and walked out with tears in my eyes, a bright red face, feeling like I was a criminal.' In an emotional update on Friday, Ms Fox revealed NAB's fraud department had blocked her access temporarily so it could re-process the EPOA documents. 'Their reasoning was to make sure I wasn't defrauding my father of his money, even though I was going into the bank account to pay one of his bills,' she said. 'I had to go into the NAB today, stand in the line for all that time, explain the situation again and I had to go through a process to get out cash to then walk down to the post office to pay my dad's rates. 'That's just rubbish.' Ms Fox ended her rant by calling on NAB's fraud department to tell her 'what the hell is going on'. 'I cannot call up and inquire as to the progress of this. The bank cannot call up and inquire. All I can do is send an email, which they may respond to within 30 days, and that is not okay,' she said. 'It drives me crazy. It really does. 'The banking overreach, the protecting people's money, which is literally holding people's money hostage. 'I'm not okay with it. If my dad could actually speak for himself, he would not be okay with it either.' Several commenters recommended Ms Fox go to the banking ombudsman if her access wasn't reinstated soon. 'Put a complaint in at the bank, then put a complaint in at the ombudsman,' one wrote. 'They make it hard for us to look after our aging parents,' another said. 'What a nightmare,' another wrote. Others suggested why the bank may have initially blocked her access. 'Unfortunately this is a legislation issue, banks are required to periodically refresh everyone's ID,' one wrote. 'I think the bank is doing the right thing to protect your father's account,' another said. 'It's every bank following elder abuse legislation,' another wrote. 'I'd rather them be over-cautious than do nothing. At least you will get access back with no money taken. Imagine how many people are defrauded,' another said.

White pupils are the least likely group to get into a top university - with just one in 10 expected to land a spot
White pupils are the least likely group to get into a top university for the third year running, analysis suggests. Official data from the Department for Education (DfE) shows only 11.7 per cent of white pupils are attending the highest-ranking third of universities by age 19. This compares with 12.1 per cent of black pupils, 15.5 per cent of those who are mixed race and 18.6 per cent of Asians. The underperformance of white students is partly driven by British pupils from low-income families – one of the lowest-achieving sub-categories. Only 3 per cent of these pupils made it into 'high-tariff' universities – defined as the top for entry requirements. It comes after Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson pledged last week to make raising standards for white working-class pupils a priority. She said it was a 'national disgrace' that so many were 'written off' at school and failed to achieve their potential in exams. Alan Smithers, professor of education at Buckingham University, said: 'It is striking how well young people from the ethnic minorities do in education in this country. The underperformance of white students is partly driven by British pupils from low-income families – one of the lowest-achieving sub-categories. 'They understand the crucial role that education plays in living the good life, whereas young people in this country have grown used to being supported by the state.' Entry for native English-speakers was 42.8 per cent, while for those whose first language is not English it was 60.9 per cent. Professor Smithers said the data suggested universities were welcoming to ethnic minorities, following claims from some campaigners that they are institutionally racist. He added: 'The myth of university racism comes from the US and has been taken up by sociology departments in this country, which can become training grounds for activists who spend their years on campus seeking out every small sign that can be interpreted as racism.' The rate of entering university was also lower for British-born pupils than for those who had a migrant background. Entry for native English-speakers was 42.8 per cent, while for those whose first language is not English it was 60.9 per cent A DfE spokesman said: 'This Government is committed to supporting the aspiration of every person who meets the requirements and wants to go to university – regardless of their background. 'We know baked-in inequalities remain in our education system, which is why universities must do more to expand opportunity and improve outcomes for disadvantaged students.' The analysis of 2023/24 data – the latest available – covers pupils who attended English state schools, not those in private schools or Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
