June 26 (UPI) -- Singers Brandy and Monica say their upcoming Boy is Mine Tour was 27 years in the making.
The music icons stopped by The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday to discuss their upcoming tour, which takes its name from their 1998 hit song "The Boy is Mine."
Brandy said the idea for the song came from an episode of The Jerry Springer Show.
"One of the topics was 'The Boy is Mine,' and I'm like, 'Oh my god, song idea, let's do this!'" she told Fallon.
Monica added that when she first listened to the lyrics, she knew fans would think they were fighting.
"And people still think we're fighting," she said, adding, "We're a musical marriage."
When Fallon asked if the pair intended to record new music together, Brandy replied that "it opens the door, for sure."
The tour kicks off in Cincinnati Oct. 16 and concludes in Houston Dec. 7.

Brandy, Monica Are Ready To Capitalize Off Tour Momentum With New Music And Vegas Residency

As Brandy and Monica gear up for their co-headlining The Boy Is Mine tour, the women are already planning to capitalize off this meteoric momentum. During their appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday (June 25), the R&B veterans spoke on the tour and their 'musical marriage.' 'I think it opens the door [for new music],' Brandy hinted. 'We need some songs to sing on the tour.' Monica confessed, 'We'll start working on some music immediately.' She also teased that some of that new material could be 'promoted on the road.' Their last, proper collab came in 2012 with 'It All Belongs To Me.' They also reunited last June for Ariana Grande's reimagined version of 'the boy is mine.' In a separate sit-down with ET, Monica questioned if 'now was a good time to create more music or leave the legacy as is' and Brandy quickly responded, 'We need to create more music and capitalize on this moment. I want to go to Vegas and do the residency after the tour. I'm thinking ahead.' According to Brandy, The Boy Is Mine tour was 'twenty-seven years in the making' and is something that would've made mentor Whitney Houston 'proud.' The highly-anticipated tour kicks off in Ohio this October with special guests Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and Jamal Roberts. 'Monica and I coming together again isn't just about the music— it's about honoring where we came from and how far we've both come,' Brandy said following the announcement made on Tuesday (June 24). Monica added, 'This tour is a celebration of our history, our impact, and the fans who have grown with us […] We're giving the people what they've been asking for.'
