Combat and creativity - the rise of Tielemans at Villa
After struggling in his first season in the West Midlands, Tielemans had a point to prove in 2024-25.

And, although Villa missed out on Champions League football on the final day, the 28-year-old has made his presence felt in the heart of midfield over the past nine months.
But how has he done it?
[BBC]
Nothing illustrates the change in his role more than the amount of time he has spent on the pitch.
In his first season at Villa Park, he played just 1,620 minutes in the Premier League, waiting until November for his first Premier League start.
Last season - despite featuring in just four more games - Tielemans nearly doubled the amount, playing 3,032 minutes.
His versatility is a key asset, with Emery able to deploy him in several of the different central midfield positions and even occasionally on the left-hand side.

He even ended up as Villa's third top goalscorer despite scoring only three times, following the departure of Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr.
Nevertheless, his influence in the final third focuses more on his ability to break down the opposition, and he created more chances (61) than any other Aston Villa player this season.
That number put him ninth overall across all players in the Premier League and is a significant improvement on his first year at the club where he only created 18 opportunities.
Add to that his 2,517 touches - again highest for his team-mates - and it merely emphasises his impact.

At the other end of the pitch, Tielemans has been just as impressive.
Not only has he won possession the most times (145), but he also made the most tackles (84) across the entire season, with the latter number more than doubling his tally from the previous year.
With his dual ability to play high up the pitch, and to drop deep to win the ball back, it seems pretty clear Tielemans' improvement has made him one of Villa's most important players under Unai Emery.
If he were to leave this summer, it would be a damaging blow for hopes of a Champions League return next season.

Rangers face Champions League exit after early collapse against Club Brugge
Rangers' horrendous start to their Champions League play-off against Club Brugge left them with a bruising 3-1 defeat at Ibrox and staring at the exit door. In a nightmare beginning to the first leg, Gers defender Nasser Djiga inexplicably allowed a long ball past him in the third minute and grateful visiting striker Romeo Vermant coolly lofted the ball over stranded goalkeeper Jack Butland. And further strikes from Jorne Spileers and Brandon Mechele had the visitors 3-0 up after just 20 minutes. Brazilian striker Danilo pulled a goal back four minutes after the break and the home side rallied, but the Belgian outfit stood firm. The return game against Nicky Hayen's men in Belgium next Wednesday will require a huge turnaround, albeit the Govan club are assured Europa League group phase football at least. Wins over Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen in previous qualifiers revealed flaws in Russell Martin's new-look Gers side and raised concerns in the stands, as did back-to-back draws to start the Premiership campaign. And once again the former Southampton boss incurred the ire of the Light Blue legions. Martin made 10 changes for Saturday's 4-2 Premier Sports Cup victory over Alloa and seven for the visit of the Belgian outfit. The news that elicited the most surprise was that 19-year-old England youth international Jayden Meghoma, who signed on loan from Brentford on Sunday, went straight in at left-back with Max Aarons preferred to experienced club captain James Tavernier at right-back. Jack Butland, John Souttar, Mohamed Diomande, Oliver Antman, Djeidi Gassama, and Nicolas Raskin all returned. Greece international Christos Tzolis, who scored for Greece against Scotland at Hampden Park in March and who has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, started for the visitors, while former Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet was in goal. All eyes were on Meghoma, who spent last season on loan at Preston, and he started positively. But a horror mistake by Djiga allowed Tzolis' pass to give Vermant an easy finish which stunned everyone inside the ground. The Gers fans were coming to terms with the needless loss of a goal when Tzolis' corner from the right was knocked past Butland by the unmarked Spileers from 12 yards. The boos that rang round the ground intensified when Mechele, making his 500th appearance for Brugge, stepped all too easily in front of Danilo just outside the Rangers box and gave Butland no chance with an arrowed right-footed drive. A three-goal deficit at the break left the Gers support in a state of shock but they got a lifeline when Danilo slid in to convert an enticing cross from Meghoma. Gassama's angled-drive skipped inches past the far post before Mohamed Diomande and Danilo were replaced by Hamza Igamane and Thelo Aasgaard. Gassama had the ball in the Brugge net in the 78th minute but French referee Francois Letexier was asked by VAR to check his pitchside monitor and quickly decided that Mignolet had the ball in his hand before it was bundled into the net. The Light Blues' second-half display was heartening but it was a chastening first 20 minutes which keeps the spotlight on Martin.

Leandro Trossard: Arsenal forward set to pen new deal as 'value' recognised
Leandro Trossard is set to sign a new contract at Arsenal. The Belgian, who joined the Gunners for £27million from Brighton and Hove Albion back in 2023, has spent two and a half seasons in north London, scoring 28 times and assisting 23 in 124 games at the Emirates Stadium. He has played a crucial role in Mikel Arteta's turning around of the club's fortunes, with Arsenal now firmly considered title contenders. The Athletic reports that the winger has agreed on fresh terms to his current deal, which will mean a 'significant' wage increase to reflect his valued role within the first-team fold. Trossard's current contract expires in 2027, and that will be the case once more with his new deal. Previous reports had claimed that Trossard could leave north London with Arsenal rumoured to be wanting to strengthen their frontline. Trossard was an unused substitute in Arsenal's opening-day victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford last Sunday, when Riccardo Calafiori notched the winner. Trossard suffered a groin injury during the Gunners' pre-season friendly against rivals Tottenham in Hong Kong earlier last month, and has yet to return to action since then.

Racist abuse will 'not bring down' Tottenham's Tel
Tottenham forward Mathys Tel says the online racist abuse he received after the club's recent defeat in the Uefa Super Cup will not "bring him down". The 20-year-old Frenchman was the target of abusive messages on social media after Spurs lost the match 4-3 on penalties after letting a two-goal lead slip in normal time. Tel came on as a substitute in the 79th minute and was one of two Spurs players who failed to convert from the spot in the penalty shootout. Spurs said they were "disgusted" by the abuse and those who sent the messages to Tel, who joined the north London club from Bayern Munich permanently in the summer, were "nothing but cowards". Speaking for the first time since the incident in a post on his Instagram account Tel said he wanted to say "thank you" for all the "messages of support" he had received. "I was also disappointed about Wednesday night but racism has no place in our society. Every day is a learning curve, and every day is a lesson," Tel said. "I know where I come from, where I started and none of this will bring me down. With work and humility, respect reigns." Tel's comments come in the wake of racist abuse suffered by Bournemouth player Antoine Semenyo in their opening match of the Premier League season against Liverpool at Anfield. Last Friday's game with the current champions was briefly halted in the 29th minute after Semenyo flagged it up to the referee. A 47-year-old man from Liverpool, who was arrested by Merseyside Police on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, has been conditionally bailed.
