35 new UP govt degree colleges to get ₹4.90 cr for furniture, equipment
Furniture and equipment worth ₹4.90 crore will be procured for 35 of the 71 new government degree colleges. The special secretary (higher education), Girijesh Kumar Tyagi, recently issued the order approving the budget, as informed by director (higher education) Amit Bharadwaj.
The budget, approved at ₹14 lakh per college, is aimed at preparing these institutions for students before academic activities commence. The furniture and equipment will be purchased through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. The 35 colleges include Government Degree College at Sirathu in Kaushambi, Government Degree College at Barki Sevapuri in Varanasi and Government Degree College at Majhawan in Mirzapur.
These 35 colleges are part of the 71 new government degree colleges under construction in the state. Sixty-nine of these are expected to be fully ready to start academic activities from July 1 for the academic session 2025-26. On May 26, the state government also released ₹1.38 crore for books, laboratory equipment, and other essentials for 46 of these new colleges slated to begin operations from July 1.
In addition to arranging furniture and lab equipment, officers of the Directorate of Higher Education are also busy sending requisitions for approved Assistant Professor posts in these colleges to the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. In-principle approval has been given for a total of 1,562 posts to be filled through direct recruitment in these 71 new colleges, including 1,065 posts for assistant professors.
Until regular appointments are completed, classes in these new institutions will be managed by deputing teachers from other colleges. Notably, in accordance with the new National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, all three streams — science, commerce, and arts — will be taught in these colleges. Most of the existing 172 government degree colleges in the state currently offer only one or two streams. However, to promote inter-disciplinary studies as provisioned in NEP-2020, all three streams will be offered in the new colleges.
More than 40 of these new degree colleges have already been formally transferred to the UP Directorate of Higher Education by the implementing agencies. Officials are now focused on ensuring requisite resources, including furniture and equipment, for these colleges.

Mass marriage scheme: Only empanelled cos to supply goods
1 2 Lucknow: After complaints that arrangements and goods at CM Samoohik Vivah events were often substandard, the social welfare department has decided to use only empanelled agencies for providing items and services. This has become crucial after the financial allocation for every couple was increased from Rs 51,000 to Rs 1 lakh from this month. A host of other changes have also been enforced to bring transparency within the system. "The decision was taken to ensure uniformity in products and services and quality control. All districts were directed to empanel agencies at the start of the financial year. The headquarters will similarly empanel agencies via e-tendering or the GeM portal. A DM-led committee in each district will take the final call so that there is no arbitrary purchasing and there is transparency," said Kumar Prashant, director, social welfare. From this year, not only did the budget per couple increase but also the income limit for a family to participate in the scheme increased, making more couples eligible. Sources in the department said some complaints were recently received about gifts for the groom and bride not adhering to standards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tickets for Blackpink's Singapore shows in November will cost between S$168 and S$428 CNA Read More Undo For instance, instead of silver anklets, some brides were given anklets of other materials. Similarly, clothes for the couple were also not up to standard in some cases. "The department took action against officials where such complaints were received, and FIRs were also filed. It was observed that in certain areas, local dealers were roped in to provide material which was substandard. The same case was seen in arrangements which were substandard in certain cases. Now, the department will identify the weight and quality of gifts and also be deputing senior officials for all programmes to keep a check," said an official. In addition to Rs 25,000 for gifts, Rs 15,000 was allocated for arrangements per couple. An SOP was also issued regarding the procedure to be followed at the programme so that couples are married off with proper respect and due process. Where 100 or more couples are being married at a single venue, the DM will have to be present. In a village where more than five couples get married at the same event, the district-level officer will personally check the arrangements, and where there are 250 or more couples, a department officer from another district will be present as an observer. In addition to this, the marriages will also be registered immediately, on site. A total of 24 items are to be provided to each couple with size, weight and quality defined. The items include five sarees & blouse, including a bridal saree, five petticoats (matching and stitched), embroidered 'chunri', 24 red bangles and four lac bangles, branded material for pant (1.2m) and shirt (2.25m), 2.25m long 'gamchha', a pair of silver anklet of 30 gm with certificate from manufacturer, and one pair of silver toe ring (10g) with certificate from manufacturer. Teach students about Keeladi: Minister to teachers
Trichy: School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi urged teachers to teach students about Keeladi and its historical importance while the Union govt is resisting to present the real history of Tamil culture. Speaking at an introductory event of his new book on National Education Policy (NEP) at Jamal Mohammed college on Friday, the minister said the book was written to oppose the NEP as it was against students, parents and every other stakeholder. Nagapattinam VCK MLA Mohamed Shanavas, who spoke before the minister, also accused the Union govt of attempting to "erase" and attack Tamil Nadu's rich history. "It's there for everyone to see. Despite enough scientific evidence, the Union government continues to undermine the Keeladi finding and question it," he said. About 350 teachers and headmasters from across the district, along with around 100 other attendees, participated in the event. Earlier in the day, the chief educational officer had convened a meeting at the same venue with high school and higher secondary school headmasters to discuss admissions and the post-reopening status in their schools. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Meanwhile, some teachers said they did not attend the event willingly. "Apparently, a directive was sent from the education department to our headmaster asking that ten teachers attend the event. The HM asked me to go, so I came. But given a choice, I wouldn't have travelled this far for something unrelated to my work," said a govt schoolteacher who left the hall as soon as the minister's speech ended. A headmaster from a govt-aided school, who had also attended the earlier official meeting, said, "It's unfair to keep us back for another two and a half hours for what feels more like a political event than an official one relevant to us.
