US Expected to Greenlight $5 Billion Investment for Morocco's Southern Provinces

US Expected to Greenlight $5 Billion Investment for Morocco's Southern Provinces

Morocco World2 days ago
Rabat – The US is turning its pledges into reality, preparing to invest $5 billion to support the socio-economic development of Morocco's southern provinces in Western Sahara.
For years, especially after the US recognized Morocco's territorial integrity over the region in 2020, Washington has pledged to support the inclusive growth of the southern provinces.
'A policy limited under Joe Biden's administration, the possibility for American companies to invest in Western Sahara is expected to be eased by Donald Trump,' the African Intelligence wrote on Thursday.
The report said that the Trump administration is preparing to encourage American companies to invest in Morocco's southern provinces. The US Development Finance Corporation received a green light from Washington to find projects in the region.
The development finance cooperation has already held meetings with Moroccan stakeholders, including Moroccan banks and companies, to identify promising projects, the report added.
For years, the US has been pledging to continue to support the development of Morocco's southern provinces. The US further emphasized this commitment following its newfound position in 2020, when it officially recognized Morocco's full sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
Following its decision, former U.S. Ambassador to Morocco David Fischer announced the US' willingness to open a consulate in Dakhla and to support and encourage investment and development projects that bring 'tangible benefits' to the region's residents.
'I come from a business background in the United States, and I am 100 percent certain that Morocco has a strong economic future ahead of it as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic,' he said in December 2020.
The development of the region is a pillar of King Mohammed VI's vision. In his speeches, the monarch has been sharing his vision, emphasizing Morocco's determination to transform southern provinces into an 'engine of development at the regional and continental levels.'
The North African kingdom launched several projects to fulfill this commitment, including the Dakhla Atlantic Port.
Morocco and the US enjoy strong relations. Now, the two countries seek deeper ties.
The US repeatedly emphasized its support for Morocco's territorial integrity. This was confirmed just a few days ago by the US ambassador nominee to Morocco, Richard Duke Buchan III .
During his hearing on July 30, Buchan reiterated his country's position, hailing Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the only viable basis for a just and lasting solution for the Western Sahara dispute.
He also reiterated his country's determination to facilitate the UN-led political process, calling on all parties to the dispute to engage in the process without further delay. Tags: relations between the US and Morocco

Gaza Receives New Batch of Morocco's Humanitarian Aid

Another batch of Morocco's humanitarian aid to Gaza arrived today and is on its way to provide food and medicines for Gazans, innocent victims of the Israeli starvation and genocidal war. The delivery is part of Morocco's recent aid campaign, sending emergency food, medical supplies, and shelter materials that King Mohammed VI ordered to support Palestinians in Gaza. This new aid batch comes following previous reports that indicated that the North African country is sending more humanitarian aid to the genocide-torn Gaza through an arranged delivery route. Earlier this week, King Mohammed VI instructed the government to send 180 tons of humanitarian aid directed to civilians in Gaza, which has been subject to Israeli-induced starvation since Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) besieged the enclave. The initiative came to confirm Morocco's commitment and efforts in supporting Palestinians and Gazans during the inhumane situation. Bayt Mal Al Quds Asharif agency implemented in July the third phase of Morocco's humanitarian aid campaign. The aid delivery included various supplies, including a variety of fresh vegetables. In June 2024, Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that King Mohammed VI ordered sending an aid package that included 40 tons of medical supplies for the people in Gaza, aiming to tackle medical needs amid the Israel's genocide. Morocco's recent initiative comes following the staggering growing number of death toll among Gazans due to famine-related issues. Recent data from the Palestinian Health Ministry indicate that the number of starvation fatalities has jumped to 175, including 93 children. A growing chorus of international major powers have condemned the israeli starvation approach and IOF use of food and humanitarian aid blockade as a weapon of war against civilians in the enclave. Israel's starvation approach and genocide against innocent Gazans has led to its growing international isolation. Several international countries, including France, the UK, Canad, and Portugal have decided to recognize the statehood of Palestine, particularly in light of humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and references to a possible annexation of Palestinian territories. International organizations have been calling for a blockade lifting and sending more humanitarian aid and medical suplies to Gaza. The Derector General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for more and continued flow of health aid to the enclave. Morocco Begins Preparation for 2026 Legislative Elections

Morocco has started preparing for its 2026 legislative elections following direct orders from King Mohammed VI. The Interior Ministry held two key meetings with political party leaders to discuss the upcoming electoral process. The meetings follow the King's Throne Speech on July 29, where he announced that the next legislative elections will take place on their regular constitutional schedule. The monarch stressed that lawmakers must prepare and adopt the General Electoral Code for the House of Representatives before the end of 2025. In his speech, the King tasked Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, with ensuring careful preparation of the next legislative election. He ordered political consultations with all relevant stakeholders to make the process transparent and inclusive. Political party leaders from across the spectrum welcomed the King's decision to launch election preparations through consultation with concerned parties. They commended the approach as consistent with the royal method of managing major national events through dialogue and constructive discussion. The two meetings provided a platform to focus on fundamental questions related to the general framework for the 2026 legislative elections. Participants showed a spirit of responsibility and collective commitment to make this election a prime opportunity to confirm Morocco's unique electoral model within its democratic framework. Parties' leaders displayed dedication to upholding Morocco's democratic choices and processes throughout the proceedings of the next legislative elections. Following the productive exchanges during both meetings, political parties agreed to submit their proposals for the 2026 legislative election framework to the Interior Ministry before the end of August. The ministry will then examine the proposals to agree on legislative measures to develop and submit during the country's upcoming autumn parliamentary session. The collaborative approach for the next legislative elections demonstrates the North African country's commitment to transparent democratic processes and inclusive political participation across party lines.
