Expert recommends millets as healthier alternative to rice and wheat
One bowl of rice or wheat is equivalent to one bowl of sugar, according to Khadar Vali, popularly known as the 'Millet Man of India'. Maintaining that replacing rice with wheat did not serve the purpose for health freaks, offered millets as the best solution. 'There are over 240 varieties of millets across the world. Millet-based food habits can prevent or cure 80% of diseases. Yet, most people are unaware of it,' he said at a State seminar on the 'Importance of Millets' held at the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) here on Monday (August 18). Mr. Vali, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, has dedicated 20 years of his life to creating awareness about the use of millets. The nation honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2023. 'Millets can control the flooding of glucose in the bloodstream. High in fibre, they can reverse several diseases, including diabetes, fatty liver, and thyroid. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and anti-cancerous properties. It counters hormonal, microbial and glucose imbalance in the body,' he said. Mr. Vali has come up with a millet protocol for each disease. Cherudhanya Mahatmyam, a book on the protocol, was released on the occasion. He suggested the regular intake of fermented millet porridge as the ideal way to detox the body. Millets require less amount of water and hence can be cultivated even in barren lands or roadsides, thus conserving water to a great extent, he said. P.T.A. Rahim, MLA, inaugurated the seminar. Organic Farmers' Collective general convenor C.P. Abdurahman presided.
