Sarma: Principal must apologise for baby's death
Guwahati: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) principal should apologise to the parents who lost their four-day-old infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on Tuesday due to "complete negligence". After his visit to the hospital on Monday night, Sarma told the media, "The infant died in the NICU due to complete negligence of GMCH. The principal should apologise to the parents. It was a blunder and an inexcusable offence." He added that the death caused him extreme pain, and he felt unexplainable shame at the occurrence of such a tragic incident at GMCH. "This hospital has more doctors, nurses, and other staff than required. It was absolute negligence on the part of GMCH, due to which Smita Deka and Utpal Bordoloi lost their four-day-old infant," he added. The infant died after falling from a cot and becoming entangled in medical equipment wires. GMCH principal Achyut Ch Baishya labelled the incident as an 'accident', drawing criticism. Meanwhile, the body of the infant was handed over to the couple, Smita Deka and Utpal Bordoloi. The couple left the hospital with the lifeless body of their first child after the chief minister met them late on Monday night and promised a comprehensive investigation. Bordoloi told the media that he was asked to visit the CM at his home regarding the incident. "The CM said he would understand the situation and see what can be done. I am convinced of the assurance of the CM that we will get justice," he added. He added that he has lodged an FIR explaining what he witnessed in the NICU and alleging complete negligence behind the death of their child. The state govt has formed a three-member committee that includes additional chief secretary L Sweety Changson, director of medical education Dr Anup Kumar Barman, and AIIMS Guwahati paediatric specialist (HOD) Dr Jaya Shankar Kaushik to probe the circumstances surrounding the infant's death. This comes after CM Himanta Biswa Sarma promised a comprehensive investigation. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
