How Filming Italy Sardegna Plans To Serve As A Bridge Between Italy & The U.S.

Yahoo20-06-2025
Now entering its eighth edition, Filming Italy Sardegna is gearing up for what looks set to be its buzziest event to date. Founded by Tiziana Rocca, the film and television event kicks off June 19, 2025, at Forte Village in Cagliari, Sardinia.
The festival will present more than 70 films, many of which are Italian or world premieres. Notable titles in the line-up this year include Steven Soderbergh's Presence, starring Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan; Reflection in a Dead Diamond, the critically acclaimed spy thriller from Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani; and Karate Kid: Legends, directed by Jonathan Entwistle. The festival will open with the film Poveri Noi by Fabrizio Maria Cortese, starring Paolo Ruffini on Thursday.

'The lineup is incredibly rich and diverse, spanning multiple genres, regions and perspectives,' says Rocca, who also returned this year as artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival, which wrapped June 14. She says that Sardegna is different to Taormina in that it is 'more grounded in mentorships and education'. For her, she sees the four-day event serving as 'a powerful platform for introducing cinema to younger generations.'
'Filming in Italy Sardegna was created to give real visibility and opportunities to the next generation,' says Rocca. 'Reaching our eighth edition is a proud milestone and it proves that our efforts are making a difference. Our purpose is to support young talent, foster industry connections, highlight female voices and promote both Italian and international cinema.'
She points to the festival's short film competition, which is organized in partnership with the University of Cagliari, as one of the star events of the festival. The short film jury will be presided over by actress and director Macaela Ramazzotti, and she will be joined by Heather Graham, Alec Baldwin, Rocío Muñoz Morales, Riccardo Milani, Aurora Giovinazzo and Giacomo Giorgio.
There's also a strong emphasis for the festival to spotlight women in the industry and this year, Sardegna is honoring The Last Showgirl director Gia Coppola with the Women Power Excellence Award. 'Her presence is a source of great pride for our festival and a tangible sign of the increasingly strong link between American cinema and our country,' says Rocca.
Other notable guests this year include Simon Baker, who will receive the Filming Italy Excellence Award, and Cuba Gooding Jr., who will be honored with the Filming Italy Creativity Award. French actress Anouchka Delon will also attend, receiving an award in memory of her father Alain. Italian actress Martina Stella will act as the fest's godmother.
Television will also play a central role at the event this year. 'Today's audience consumes stories across both film and TV, and we fully embrace that evolution,' Rocca says. In addition to Baker, other major TV stars such as Fran Drescher (The Nanny), Jane Seymour (Dr. Quinn), Melissa Roxburgh (Manifest), Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) and many others are set to touch down on the Italian island. 'Their presence highlights how storytelling has expanded into serialized formats with equal artistic value,' says Rocca, adding that many will be participating in masterclasses, public talks and conversations with students.
'Their insight and experience will inspire dialogue around the future of cinema, storytelling and artistic collaboration.'
Promoting the region, in particular Sardinia as a prime filming destination, has also been a core objective for Rocca as she has been steadily building the event across the last eight years. 'I chose Cagliari and southern Sardinia specifically because these locations are breathtaking yet underrepresented in global cinema. Through the festival we are shining a spotlight on the island's landscapes, culture and infrastructure, encouraging international filmmakers to consider Sardinia for their next project.'
She adds: 'We're also proud to note that Sardegna is a plastic-free, eco-conscious festival. We highlight films that raise awareness around sustainability and environmental issues, especially for younger audiences.'
Filming In Sardegna takes place June 19-22, 2025.

Sutton Foster Feels ‘a Sense of Guilt,' Wants ‘Closure' With Hugh Jackman's Ex Deborra-Lee Furness

Broadway babe Sutton Foster is desperate to make amends to former pal Deborra-Lee Furness after taking up with the Aussie's now ex-husband, Hugh Jackman — but the Wolverine hunk's emotionally wounded former wife wants no part of his new gal's mea culpas, sources say. 'Sutton and Debs were friends,' an insider explains. 'They used to go on double dates with their husbands and even hung out one-on-one a handful of times. That's partly why it stings so badly for Debs — and it's why Sutton does feel a tremendous sense of guilt and really wants to try to mend fences.' As Globe previously reported, the Great White Way was awash with rumors that Hugh, 56, was sweet on Sutton, 50, when the pair starred together in a revival of The Music Man, which ran from December 2021 to February 2023. And about seven months after the musical wrapped, Hugh and Deborra-Lee, 69, announced their separation following 27 years of marriage. Nearly one year later, Sutton was suddenly single after announcing her split from screenwriter Ted Griffin, who she wed in 2014. In January, Hugh and his new honey — whose divorce is still ongoing — were spotted walking hand in hand as they left a Santa Monica restaurant, per People. According to the insider, 'The way Sutton tells it, she didn't intend to fall in love with Hugh. It just happened. She insists nothing ever happened between them before he and Debs split, and she really wants to get that across to Debs. She wants to explain herself and apologize for hurting her in any way.' However, the source says the Younger star is finding that easier said than done — because she's getting 'stonewalled' by unforgiving Furness. After filing to divorce Hugh, she released a scathing statement reading: 'My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal.' She called their split 'a profound wound that cuts deep.' The insider confides, 'Debs has made it very plain that she's not interested in meeting and is disgusted by this relationship. Sutton's still going to persevere through because she really believes it's important they have closure — and she's not scared to chase Debs down on this.' Solve the daily Crossword

EXCLUSIVE: Valentino CEO Steps Down

MILAN — Valentino's chief executive officer Jacopo Venturini has exited the couture house. His last day was Wednesday. On Thursday, Valentino said it had reached a mutual agreement with Venturini to terminate his employment and board roles as the executive 'has decided to take a break for personal reasons.' More from WWD What the Supply Chain Scandals Mean for Luxury Brands and Made in Italy EXCLUSIVE: Kering- and Inditex-backed Regenerative Fund for Nature Opens New Partnership Tiers to Fashion Brands Michael Kors Returns to 'Project Runway' as a Guest Judge, Plus Talking About the Steep Decline in Luxury Sales and Marc Jacobs Up for Sale for $1 Billion Sources close to the company say Alessandro Michele is staying on in his role as creative director. A source said the company is 'confirming full trust and commitment' in the designer. Michele's next collection for the brand will be unveiled in Paris for spring 2026 with a show on Oct. 5. In March 2024, former Gucci creative director Michele was appointed to the same role at Valentino, succeeding Pierpaolo Piccioli, who in May joined Balenciaga. A successor for Venturini was not named but 'will be announced in due course,' Valentino stated. Venturini was named Valentino's CEO in June 2020. He succeeded Stefano Sassi, who had been leading the company since 2006. Venturini was previously executive vice president, merchandising and global markets at Gucci, a role he left in October 2019, but his taking on the role of CEO marked a return to Valentino for the executive. After starting his career in fashion at Rinascente as a buyer from 1995 to 1999, he joined Valentino in 2000 as womenswear and menswear brand manager until 2004. He moved to Prada in 2005 as merchandising coordinator of the womenswear collection until 2008. That year he returned to Valentino as ready-to-wear collection director and retail image director, staying on until 2015, when he joined Gucci. Upon his arrival at Valentino, Venturini restructured the company's organization and focused on repositioning the brand as an Italian maison de couture, which meant, for example, closing sister brand Red Valentino. He set in motion a retail expansion, seeing growth potential in mainland China. He presented the first leg of the brand's Re-Signify project, to highlight Valentino's codes, in Shanghai in December 2020. The second part of the brand experience opened the following year at SKP in Beijing. As reported, in 2024, Valentino's sales dipped 3 percent to 1.31 billion euros amid 'a challenging and complex landscape,' the company said at the time. The Rome-based company reported a 22 percent fall in its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to 246 million euros, affected by 'non-recurring items.' At constant exchange rates, the decrease stood at 2 percent, while the Roman fashion house trumpeted that its direct retail, including e-commerce, improved 5 percent last year and represented 70 percent of revenues. In July 2023, Kering revealed it had bought a 30 percent stake in Valentino for 1.7 billion euros in cash as part of a broader strategic partnership with Qatari investment fund Mayhoola, which controls the brand. The French group, parent of Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and other luxury brands, has an option to buy 100 percent of Valentino's capital by 2028, while Mayhoola could become a shareholder in Kering. In a research note last month, Bernstein analyst Luca Solca said Renault executive Luca de Meo, who will arrive as Kering's new CEO in mid-September, must curb Kering's elevated debt levels, and perhaps 'negotiate a larger 'equity for Valentino' deal with Mayhoola.' According to Bernstein's tallies, Kering will need up to 3.4 billion euros in cash to pay for the remaining 70 percent of Valentino. Solca also suggested de Meo should fix the management operation, and foresees 'less of a need' for Kering's deputy CEOs Francesca Bellettini, in charge of brand development, and Jean-Marc Duplaix, in charge of operations and finance. Market sources speculate Bellettini could be eyeing other career options and her name has been associated with several brands currently without a CEO, from Prada, after the exit of Gianfranco D'Attis on June 30, to Ferragamo, following Marco Gobbetti's departure last March.
