SA-registered truck involved in deadly Zimbabwe crash that killed 17

At least 17 people died on Tuesday after a South African-registered haulage truck collided with a commuter omnibus in Zimbabwe. The incident occurred near Manyame River Bridge on the road linking Harare and Chitungwiza. ZimLive reports that the South Africa-registered truck was travelling to Harare while the commuter omnibus was headed for St Mary's in Chitungwiza. According to witnesses, the truck veered into oncoming traffic as it tried to avoid hitting a Honda Fit in its lane. Moments later, the South African-registered truck crashed into the commuter omnibus, crushing it under its weight. Zimbabwe national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed that all 17 victims, including some pedestrians, died at the scene of the crash. 'The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident which occurred this morning (on Tuesday) along Chitungwiza Road involving a haulage truck and a kombi,' Nyathi said in a statement. 'The police urge the media and public to be patient as police officers are currently attending the scene. More details will be released in due course.' Among the dead were two children and two pedestrians who were hit first by the truck before it rammed into the kombi. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Mpho Mafole's murder: 40-year-old suspect in court for killing Ekurhuleni auditor

City of Ekurhuleni's group divisional head of corporate and forensic audits, Mpho Mafole, 47, died last month in a hail of bullets, in what appears to be an execution. Image: Facebook A 40-year-old man is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder of Mpho Mafole, the group divisional head for corporate and forensic audits at the City of Ekurhuleni. IOL previously reported that Mafole, 47, was found in a pool of blood after his vehicle was sprayed with bullets on the R23 in Kempton Park on June 30. At the time, sources insisted Mafole's death was a hit, linked to his investigation into a massive R2 billion electricity scandal he was close to uncovering. On Tuesday, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the provincial serious and violent crime detectives had arrested a 40-year-old man. 'On (Sunday) 20 July 2025, the team arrested a 40-year-old man who is expected to appear before Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on 23 July 2025,' she said. Detectives are also looking for a second suspect, identified as Hlanganani Agripper Mncwango, after a warrant of arrest was issued for him by the court. Video Player is loading. Earlier this month, IOL reported that Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza described the brutally murdered Mafole as a dedicated public servant, a fearless champion for accountability, and a staunch advocate for ethical governance. Police in Gauteng are investigating the motive behind the murder, but activists and social media users suggest the cold-blooded murder could have been an assassination meant to silence him, linked to his work for the City of Ekurhuleni. EFF welcomes arrests in the DJ Sumbody murder investigation

Four men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a popular South African DJ, Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. Image: Social Media The EFF has welcomed the arrest of four suspects linked to the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody. This follows their appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, after being arrested on Monday afternoon. Their matter was subsequently postponed to July 29 with reports that one of the suspects is a known businessman, identified as Katiso Molefe, while the rest are alleged hitmen. The police further allege that the suspects are linked to 10 other high-profile cases, including the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. "The [police] team arrested four men between the ages of 45 and 60 in connection with the murder of a popular South African DJ, Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. Michael Pule, Floyd Mabusela, Mosa Kekana, and businessman Katiso Molefe, who is the alleged mastermind, are expected back in court on July 29," said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. The EFF, in a statement, welcomed the arrest, with the party stating: "We commend Gauteng's organised crime detectives and the Political Killings Task Team for their determined and methodical investigation, which has now resulted in the arrest of three suspected hitmen and the individual believed to have ordered the killing. A firearm recovered during the operation has been linked to multiple murders, highlighting the systemic nature of this violence and the importance of specialised units to combat it." The Alexandra Magistrate's Court has postponed the murder case against DJ Sumbody after four men who were arrested on Monday appeared in court on Tuesday. Image: X In 2022, the gruesome murder of the talented artist sent shockwaves across the country after he was shot dead while driving in Woodmead. According to Mathe, this discovery suggests that the individuals involved in DJ Sumbody's death may be part of a larger network responsible for orchestrating and carrying out violent crimes in and around Johannesburg. She added that Swart, an engineer from Vereeniging, was gunned down outside his workplace in what appears to have been a case of mistaken identity. He was shot 23 times by an alleged hitman who reportedly mistook him for another employee. "We can confirm that four suspects who were arrested on Monday on the murder of DJ Sumbody have appeared today. They have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the possession of illegal firearms, as well as ammunition. What is interesting is that the same suspects who were arrested were wanted for the murder of 30-year-old Armand Swart," she stated. While the police have not yet disclosed the full details regarding the motive, IOL has reported that those close to the investigation suggest that the killing may have stemmed from disputes involving business dealings or personal rivalries.
