Bonds 101: Why retail investors should care
Unlike equities, bonds offer:
India's bond market is witnessing remarkable growth, with data from the Jiraaf Bond Analyser highlighting an accelerating trend over the past decade.Jiraaf, an online bond investment platform, provides critical insights into this evolving asset class, which is now increasingly favored by both institutional and retail investors Once largely dominated by government and PSU issuances, India's bond market is undergoing a significant transformation.Driven by rising private sector participation and increasing investor appetite for stable, fixed-income products, the market is expanding at an unprecedented pace.Data from the Jiraaf Bond Analyser—part of the online bond investment platform Jiraaf, founded by Saurav Ghosh and Vineet Agrawal—shows that India's debt capital market is no longer just an institutional playground, but an evolving opportunity for retail investors as well.Over the last decade, India's bond market has expanded at a CAGR of around 25%, with growth accelerating over the past four years as both corporate and public sector issuers increasingly turned to debt markets to meet their funding needs. In 2024 alone, listed bond issuances crossed Rs 9.5 lakh crore (US$110 billion), signaling growing depth and liquidity in India's debt markets.A key inflection point was the post-COVID era, particularly after 2021. The global search for yield—combined with abundant liquidity and ultra-low interest rates—encouraged both institutional and high-net-worth investors to seek alternative, stable investment avenues.Indian corporates, especially in the private sector, capitalized on this shift to diversify their funding sources. What's particularly noteworthy is the changing market composition. Traditionally seen as a space dominated by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), India's bond market is now seeing a surge in private sector activity.According to Jiraaf data, non-PSU issuances crossed Rs 4.9 lakh crore (US$56 billion) in 2024, surpassing PSU issuances for the first time.Improved credit profiles of private corporates post-deleveraging and operational efficiency improvements.Increased confidence among institutional and retail investors in private sector issuers, driven by regulatory reforms and better corporate governance standards. The move also underscores a structural shift: as India's economy diversifies and formalises, more companies outside the public sector are now using debt markets for growth capital, refinancing, and working capital needs. The IL&FS crisis of 2018 was a watershed moment, exposing over-reliance on concentrated sources of funding like banks and NBFCs. This led to greater awareness around capital diversification. Regulatory reforms post-crisis and proactive steps by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have made bond markets more accessible and transparent. For individual investors, bonds present a compelling alternative to traditional instruments like fixed deposits or equities.Simply put, bonds are fixed-income instruments where governments or corporations borrow money from investors, promising regular interest payments and principal repayment at maturity.Predictable income streams through periodic interest payments.Capital preservation due to predefined maturity.Lower risk compared to equities, while delivering competitive returns.Portfolio diversification, acting as a stabilising force during market volatility. With platforms like Jiraaf simplifying access to bonds, even retail investors can now participate in what was earlier a domain reserved for large institutions.: Recommendations, suggestions, views, and opinions given by experts are their own. US-Japan Trade Deal: Auto stocks fuel Nikkei rally, Yen strengthens, gold price eases on Trump announcement — Top points
US-Japan Trade Deal: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a trade deal with Japan as countries race to ink agreements with America before the August 1 tariff deadline. Japan will pay a tariff of 15 per cent on goods imported in the US, Trump said. This includes tariffs on auto import. This is a significant drop from the 25 per cent tariffs that Trump had threatened to impose from August 1, as per his letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The US-Japan trade deal would include $550 billion of Japanese investments in the United States, Trump said in a post on Truth Social, and added that Japan would increase market access to American producers of cars, trucks, rice and certain agricultural products, among other items. Japanese PM Ishiba on Wednesday acknowledged the new trade agreement, saying it would benefit both sides and help them work together. Under the agreement, auto tariffs will also be slashed, Ishiba confirmed. 'We are the first (country) in the world to reduce tariffs on automobiles and auto parts, with no limits on volume,' he told reporters. A Trump official also confirmed the development, saying auto tariffs will be charged at 15 per cent. However, US and Japan agreed to keep the current tariff on steel and aluminium at 50 per cent as part of their bilateral trade deal, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported on Wednesday. Japanese stocks, fulled by a rally on auto shares, surged higher on the announcement of the agreement. The benchmark Topix and Nikkei 225 share gauges both moved up over 2 per cent, with gains accelerating after the announcement. Shares of Toyota Motor Corp. jumped over 10 per cent. The Nikkei rallied 2.4 per cent to 40,731.86, as of 0121 GMT, with the Tokyo Stock Exchange's transport equipment index surging 8.4 per cent as the news of the trade deal brought cheers to investors. The Yen also reacted positively on the news, strengthening to 146.20 per dollar as compared with close to 148 on Tuesday. Oil prices steadied in early trading on Wednesday after falling for three consecutive sessions as a result of the US-Japan trade deal, with Brent crude futures rising by 33 cents, or 0.48 per cent, to $68.92 a barrel by 0023 GMT. Gold prices eased on Wednesday as the US-Japan trade deal fuelled a risk appetite among investors. Spot gold was down 0.2 per cent at $3,423.44 per ounce, as of 0136 GMT, according to a report by Reuters. (With inputs from agencies)

China to get sleepless nights as Modi government makes Big move into Rare Earth magnets production, Rs 13450000000 to...
The demand for rare earth minerals is increasing quickly across the globe. These minerals contribute to several applications, like smartphones, electric vehicles, defense apparatus, and renewable energy technologies. Earlier in July, Union Minister of Heavy Industry and Steel HD Kumaraswamy stated that the Central government has drafted a proposal to offer a total of Rs 1,345 crore in subsidies to improve rare earth magnet manufacturing. This announcement is intended to strengthen critical technology supply chains in the context of restrictions placed on exports, primarily from China. Kamran Rizvi, the Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, has said that a draft scheme for rare earth magnet processing has been circulated for inter-ministerial consultation. The scheme is likely to provide incentives for establishing manufacturing infrastructure in the full value chain – mineral extraction and refining to manufacture of finished magnets. Kamran Rizvi, Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries, stated that any manufacturer who does the end-to-end processing of rare earth oxides to finished magnets can receive the subsidy. This scheme will include both private and public sector enterprises. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing – commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity–has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems.
