Statue honoring Tom Brady set to be unveiled in August, Patriots say

Fox News4 days ago

Tom Brady is by far the most accomplished player to have worn a New England Patriots uniform. The former NFL quarterback won six of his seven Super Bowl titles during his two-decade run in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Brady spent the final three seasons of his storied career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning one more championship with the team. He returned to New England last June for his Patriots Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
On Thursday, the team announced plans to continue honoring the legendary quarterback. A statue made in Brady's likeness is scheduled to be unveiled on Aug. 8 during the Patriots' preseason game against the Washington Commanders.
"A legacy etched in bronze forever. @TomBrady's statue will be unveiled on 8/8 prior to Patriots vs. Commanders," the Patriots wrote on X.
While Brady has hoisted the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy seven times, he also holds several other NFL records. He started 333 games during his career, leading his teams to 46 fourth-quarter comebacks during that span.
Brady's road to success was paved with uncertainty. He fell to the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft.
When then-franchise quarterback Drew Bledsoe suffered an injury in 2001, Brady was thrust into action. He played so well that he never relinquished the starting quarterback job.
Before making it to the professional football ranks, Brady had an uphill battle as he worked to land playing time at Michigan.
The Patriots previously retired Brady's No. 12 jersey. The statue will rise to 12 ft. in height and will be placed in front of the Patriots Hall of Fame, longtime team owner Robert Kraft said.

Border Patrol will be at the Club World Cup, says it''s routine to provide security for such events

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it regularly provides security at big sporting events in response to questions about the agency's presence at the FIFA Club World Cup amid President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "U.S. Customs and Border Protection is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the FIFA Club World Cup 26 is safe for everyone involved, as we do with every major sporting event, including the Super Bowl. Our mission remains unchanged," the agency said Thursday in response to an inquiry by The Associated Press. The agency had previously deleted a social media post that said its officers would be "suited and booted" for the opening round this weekend of Club World Cup games. FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed questions about CBP involvement during an event earlier this week promoting Saturday's opener between Inter Miami and Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. "No, I don't have any concerns about anything in the sense that we are already attentive on any security question," Infantino said. "Of course, the most important for us is to guarantee security for all fans who come to the games. And this is our priority." Border Patrol agents have routinely been called in to help with security for large events, including the Super Bowl. They handle things like screening cargo shipments into stadiums for hazardous materials and contribute to emergency planning. At last year's Copa America final at Hard Rock Stadium, throngs of fans breached security gates and forced the game to be delayed. The Club World Cup opener Saturday comes amid protests in several cities over actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The Club World Cup features 32 teams from across the globe playing in 11 cities nationwide through July 13.

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant parts ways with Mike Miller's agency, Lift Sports Management

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has parted ways with Lift Sports Management, multiple sources told The Commercial Appeal on June 12. The sources were granted anonymity since no official announcement has been made. Advertisement The Lift Sports Management list of clients no longer includes Morant, who was listed on the website as recently as May 16. Morant joined Lift, an agency headed by former Grizzlies player Mike Miller, in April 2024. Miller became a regular at Grizzlies home games this season, usually seated courtside alongside of Morant's father, Tee Morant. Morant and Miller could not be reached for comment for this story. Ja Morant previously joined Lift after parting ways with Jim Tanner of Tandem Sports + Entertainment. Morant spent his first five NBA seasons being represented by Tanner. After becoming the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Morant quickly became a star NBA point guard in Memphis. He won the NBA's Rookie of the Year award, then won the league's Most Improved award in his third season. Advertisement The success led to Morant earning his own signature shoe, becoming Nike Basketball's first Gen Z athlete. However, Morant's journey hasn't been all peaches and rainbows. He was first suspended in March 2023 after brandishing a gun in an Instagram Live video. Two months later, a second Instagram Live video surfaced online of Morant brandishing a gun. He received a 25-game suspension at the start of the 2023-24 season. Morant made two All-Star games in 2022 and 2023. Injuries and the lengthy aforementioned suspension shortened his 2023-24 campaign. He averaged 23.2 points and 7.3 assists in 50 regular season games with the Grizzlies this season. Ja Morant, Grizzlies remain strong All indications are that the relationship between the Grizzlies and Morant remains strong. Memphis hired Tuomas Iisalo as its next coach when the season ended. Morant spoke highly of Iisalo before the hiring, and his stats improved when Iisalo took over in place of former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins. Advertisement The Grizzlies have also continued to prioritize Morant as a franchise cornerstone. Morant signed a five-year extension worth $197 million in July 2022. He'll be eligible for a two-year extension this summer, but he has three seasons remaining on his current contract. What's next for Ja Morant Morant could look to partner with another agency that best represents his goals. Another option for the Grizzlies star is self representation. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recently parted ways with Wasserman to represent himself. Joel Embiid is another NBA star who also went the self representation route.
