Turkey's Erdogan insists on Cyprus two-state solution - International
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when a Turkish invasion followed a coup in Nicosia backed by Greece's then-military junta. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, declared in 1983, is recognised only by Ankara.
"We fully support the vision based on a two-state solution," Erdogan said during a visit to northern Cyprus marking 51 years since Turkish troops invaded the island.
"It is time for the international community to make peace with the realities on the ground," Erdogan said.
The Turkish leader's visit comes few days after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that meetings between Cyprus's rival leaders at the organisation's New York headquarters were "constructive," even as questions remained about crossing points on the island.
Erdogan on Sunday called for an end to the isolation of the TRNC.
"Diplomatic, political, and economic relations should be established with the TRNC, and the injustice endured by Turkish Cypriots for decades must finally come to an end," he said.
The last major round of peace talks collapsed in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in July 2017.

Chechen Leader Ramzan Kadyrov Rescued from Drowning in Turkish Resort
Taarek Refaat Ramzan Kadyrov, the controversial leader of Russia's Chechen Republic, was rescued from a near-drowning incident while vacationing at a luxury resort on Turkey's Aegean coast, according to a report by European broadcaster Euronews on Friday. The incident occurred at a five-star hotel in the Kainar area of Bodrum, a popular destination in Muğla Province. Kadyrov, 48, reportedly lost consciousness shortly after entering the water for a swim. Turkish media outlets said members of the Turkish Coast Guard, along with hotel staff, quickly noticed Kadyrov's distress and rushed to his aid. Emergency first aid was administered on-site before he was transported to a private clinic nearby. Medical personnel later confirmed that Kadyrov's condition had stabilized and there was no immediate threat to his life. No official statement has yet been issued by Chechen or Russian authorities. Football players' union hits back at 'autocratic' FIFA, Infantino in fallout from CWC - World
The global football players' union hit back at FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino on Friday, saying their autocratic style of leadership was harming the rights of its members. 'Football needs responsible leadership, not emperors,' the FIFPRO network said after a meeting of 58 national player unions responded to FIFA pursuing its agenda with unofficial player representatives. 'It needs fewer autocratic monologues and more genuine, inclusive and transparent dialogue,' the union added. FIFA announced two weeks ago it reached a consensus on key issues after Infantino hosted a group of mostly non-recognized officials in New York ahead of the Club World Cup final. The latest rift between football's governing body and its players' unions flared while the European Commission in Brussels is considering a formal complaint against FIFA. It was filed by FIFPRO's European division and national leagues in Europe against FIFA's style of governance and decision-making. FIFPRO said FIFA's core agenda included an overloaded global match calendar with too many games for elite players, lack of physical and mental recovery periods and extreme playing conditions. Players at the month-long Club World Cup in the United States reported feeling dizzy and unwell in the heat of daytime games played to appeal to worldwide TV audiences. The 63-game tournament backed by Saudi Arabian money was lucrative for clubs, especially in Europe, though FIFA added it to the schedule without formally consulting players. The tournament, FIFPRO said, was 'celebrated by President Infantino despite being held under conditions that were extreme and inappropriate for any human being, demonstrating a troubling insensitivity to human rights, even when it concerns elite athletes. 'FIFPRO reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of men and women players — rights which are being seriously undermined by commercial policies imposed by its autocratic system of governance,' the Netherlands-based union said of FIFA. 'This is a model that puts the health of players at risk and sidelines those at the heart of the game,' FIFPRO said, adding it was 'unacceptable for an organization that claims global leadership to turn a blind eye to the basic needs of the players.' FIFA was approached for comment. FIFPRO has not had a formal working agreement with FIFA since the previous one expired in 2023. President Mahmud Abbas hails Macron pledge to recognize Palestinian state - Region
Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas on Friday welcomed a letter from French President Emmanuel Macron confirming France will formally recognise the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September. On Thursday, France announced its intention to grant recognition by September, becoming the first G7 country to do so. The move was swiftly welcomed by Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, who urged additional countries to follow. Abbas called the step a 'victory for the Palestinian cause' and said it reflected France's 'genuine commitment' to international law and the two-state solution, which he warned Israel is systematically destroying through its war on Gaza, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA. He thanked Saudi Arabia for encouraging France's shift, crediting King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their support. Abbas also praised the Arab-Islamic Foreign Ministers Committee and the wider coalition backing Palestinian statehood, including efforts underway for the International Peace Conference set to convene in New York later this month. He urged all UN member states to support Palestine's bid for full membership, warning that recognition was critical 'in light of Israel's systematic efforts to undermine' the two-state framework. France joins Spain, Ireland and Norway, who recognised the State of Palestine in May 2024, seven months into Israel's war on Gaza. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
