‘Time of Great Opportunity' for U.S. and India: Usha Vance

The Hindu02-06-2025
The U.S. India relationship is in a phase of 'great opportunity', U.S. Second Lady Usha Vance has said. Ms. Vance, whose parents are from Andhra Pradesh, said that she had a personal relationship with India as she had family ties to the country and had visited India as she was growing up.
'So that's always been a relationship that I've personally thought of as very important,' Ms Vance said, during a Monday evening discussion at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum's (USISPF) Leadership Summit in Washington DC.
'The way that I think about it more broadly is I think this is a time of great opportunity. And I think if my husband [ U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance] were here, he'd say the same thing,' Ms Vance said, adding that historically , the two countries' goals and needs had not always been in alignment. Ms Vance suggested, however, that in the next four years and beyond there was an opportunity, which she linked to the people to people ties. The relationship has generally enjoyed strong bipartisan support in Washington.
India and the U.S. are in the throes of negotiating the first phase of a Bilateral Trade Agreement, with U.S. trade negotiators in India this week for talks. U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened to impose 'reciprocal tariffs' on the U.S.'s trade partners, with India being subject to a 26% rate , potentially.
During the discussion with USISPF Chairman John Chambers, which did not venture further into political topics, Ms. Vance spoke about how she met her husband at Yale Law School, their family's recent visit to India and their interactions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also spoke about her program to promote reading among children in the U.S.

Crafting the Blueprint for Entrepreneurial Success: An Interview with Wise Business Plans Director Joseph Ferriolo

Hyderabad: In today's hyper-competitive startup ecosystem, a well-crafted business plan is more than just a formal document — it's a lifeline. It provides clarity, secures funding, and charts a course for sustainable growth. Wise Business Plans, a U.S.-based strategic planning firm, has built a reputation for producing investor-ready documents across more than 400 industries. Since its founding in 2010, the company has worked with over 15,000 clients, supporting more than $2 billion in combined funding raises. 'Preparation is the one thing you can control — and preparation starts with a plan.' — Joseph Ferriolo, Director, Wise Business Plans From Small Beginnings to Global Reach Q: Wise Business Plans has been in operation for over a decade. How did the company begin? Ferriolo: We started in 2010 with a very simple mission — to give entrepreneurs a level of planning and documentation usually reserved for large corporations. Our early focus was on helping small business owners prepare loan-ready plans for banks. Over time, we expanded into investor-grade plans, immigration-compliant business plans for visas like the E-2, L-1, and EB-5, as well as specialized plans for franchises, nonprofits, and commercial real estate ventures. Why a Professional Plan Matters Q: Why is a professional business plan so critical in today's market? Ferriolo: Access to capital is competitive. Banks, investors, and immigration authorities are all looking for clear, well-researched, and strategically sound documentation. A professional plan is more than numbers — it's a narrative backed by data. It tells the story of the business, explains the market opportunity, and builds confidence in execution. Global Trends and India's Growing Role Q: You've worked with entrepreneurs from multiple countries. What global trends are you seeing? Ferriolo: There's been a notable rise in cross-border entrepreneurship, with individuals seeking to establish businesses in countries like the U.S., Canada, India, and the U.K. for both market expansion and residency purposes. Technology-based startups, green energy initiatives, and health-focused ventures are particularly strong sectors right now. We've also seen Indian entrepreneurs showing greater interest in expanding overseas, especially in technology services, education, and sustainable manufacturing, while foreign investors are increasingly eyeing India for its growing consumer base and innovation potential. 'Indian entrepreneurs are increasingly pursuing U.S. market entry — and immigration-compliant planning is often the first step.' — Joseph Ferriolo Helping Indian Entrepreneurs Navigate U.S. Immigration Visas Q: Many Indian entrepreneurs are applying for U.S. immigration visas to start or expand their businesses. What role does Wise Business Plans play in this process? Ferriolo: We work closely with Indian business owners and their immigration attorneys to prepare USCIS-compliant business plans for visas such as the E-2 Treaty Investor, L-1 Intra-Company Transfer, and EB-5 Investor Program. These plans require a high degree of detail — including market analysis, job creation projections, and financial modeling — to demonstrate the business's viability and economic impact. Our role is to translate the entrepreneur's vision into a structured document that meets U.S. government standards while supporting the broader immigration strategy. Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs Q: What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? Ferriolo: Start with clarity. Know who your customer is, what problem you're solving, and how you'll deliver value. Then, put it in writing — a good plan forces you to confront assumptions and build a realistic roadmap. Don't see it as a one-time document; see it as a living strategy. Wise Business Plans continues to expand its global footprint, working with clients from over 20 countries. As Ferriolo puts it, 'No matter where you start, your business success begins with the right plan.'

UK Foreign Minister David Lammy faces hefty fine after fishing trip with JD Vance sparks outrage

Last week, UK Foreign Minister David Lammy went fishing with US Vice President JD Vance at Vance's private retreat in the English countryside. Lammy could face a £2,500 ($3,400) fine for fishing without a rod license, which is illegal in Britain. On Wednesday, Lammy referred himself to the UK's environment watchdog, the Environment Agency, for this offense. A Foreign Office spokesperson said Lammy had an administrative oversight and hadn't acquired the right fishing licenses for the private lake at Chevening House, reported by CNN. Lammy quickly bought the correct rod fishing licenses once he realized the mistake. He also wrote to the Environment Agency, explaining the error and how it was fixed, while thanking them for their work protecting Britain's fisheries. Lammy had hosted Vance at Chevening House, a 'grace-and-favor' retreat in Kent, known as the Garden of England, as per the reports. Despite being critical of the UK government's approach to free speech, Vance and Lammy held a friendly press conference after their fishing trip, according to the report by CNN. Vance joked to reporters that all his kids caught fish, but Lammy did not. The caught fish were returned to the private lake, according to Britain's PA Media news agency. In England and Wales, anyone aged 13 or older must have a rod license to freshwater fish, as part of laws protecting fish stocks and promoting sustainable fishing, claims report. Q1: Why is UK Foreign Minister David Lammy facing a fine? Lammy could be fined £2,500 for fishing without a rod license at Chevening House with US Vice President JD Vance. Q2: Did Lammy fix the fishing license mistake? Yes, he bought the correct license and informed the Environment Agency about the error.
