Take action against Siddaramaiah over stampede tragedy: Shobha Karandlaje asks Cong leadership
Bengaluru: Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje on Saturday challenged the Congress leadership to initiate action against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar over the Chinnaswamy stampede incident, which claimed 11 lives.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Bengaluru, Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Labour and Employment, said, "If the High Command has any capacity, I want to ask the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, are you bankrupt? Are there no leaders in Karnataka other than CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM Shivakumar?"
"Appoint other leaders and investigate them. You talk about the country on foreign soil; don't you have the capacity to punish your own leaders when they are found guilty?" she said.
The MoS said that the Congress leadership was mum as "Karnataka is its ATM".
Countering the Congress' claim that the stampede incident was an accident, she asked, "If it is an accident, why didn't you open all the gates of Chinnaswamy Stadium? There was no one to control the crowd. Why are you protecting Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) office bearers? What's your relation with them? What was the urgency for the KSCA to felicitate RCB? What is your relation with RCB, which is a private franchise?"
Attacking Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, she stated, "You got blood on your hands, and you can't escape. This tragedy occurred due to a craze for publicity. I don't know whether someone from the state Congress will become an IPL franchise owner. Anything can happen in the state."
"The parents have lost their young children in the stampede. A youth studying M.Tech in my constituency died. The family is now in such a state of depression that they didn't want to bring his body to their residence in Bengaluru and took it to their native place. They clearly said they wanted no one to visit them," she recounted.
"You have committed a mistake and are passing the blame on the police officers. I want to ask CM and Dy CM, why did you want to celebrate it? We can understand if an Olympic gold medallist or champion teams representing the country are felicitated. When a private franchise like the RCB wins, you think of felicitating them," she questioned.
"You post about it and go to receive them at the airport. The grand steps of Vidhana Soudha were used for swearing-in ceremonies of new governments. There, you bring a private team. The PWD Department, while giving permission, stated that seating arrangements had to be made on stage for only 25 to 30 persons. But your family, children, grandchildren from CM Siddaramaiah, Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan, Minister Ramalinga Reddy-there were 300 to 350 persons," she chided.
"In front of you, people stood unsafely on the terrace of the High Court; people were seen dangerously sitting on top of trees on branches. How did you issue permission?" she asked.

Bengaluru stampede: Open invitation without preparation is criminal negligence, says MP Tejasvi Surya
Bengaluru: Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the decision to hold an open invitation event at Chinnaswamy Stadium without logistical preparation as "criminal negligence" that culminated in the loss of 11 innocent lives. Drawing a comparison with the 2011 World Cup victory celebrations in Mumbai, Surya said despite the participation of over 15 lakh people there, no such tragedy occurred. That was because of better crowd management and planning in Mumbai, he pointed out. Surya lashed out at what he described as an "egotistical and irresponsible" attempt by the state's top leadership, including CM Siddaramiah and DCM DK Shivakumar, to get involved in RCB celebrations and "bask in undeserved glory". He alleged that despite being fully aware of the massive crowd that would gather for the event, the govt failed to make adequate safety arrangements. "It is not cricketers or fans who are to blame. The state govt, particularly the CM and DCM, orchestrated a scenario that led to this tragic stampede," Surya said. He urged the RCB franchise to show solidarity with its fanbase. "Even though there is no legal obligation, morally and humanely, the franchise should come forward to support and compensate the victims' families," Surya said.

Bengaluru stampede: Panel gets one month to probe stampede
Bengaluru: Karnataka govt Saturday gave retired high court judge Justice John Michael D'Cunha, who heads a one-member judicial commission, one month to investigate the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 people dead and 75 injured. The govt issued a fresh notification on June 5, assigning priority to the probe into the tragedy that occurred during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. Justice D'Cunha was already heading a commission investigating two sensitive cases — the alleged Covid-era medical procurement scam and deaths of patients due to suspected oxygen shortage at Chamarajanagar district hospital. Initially appointed on Aug 25, 2023, the commission's term was extended in Oct 2024 till July 31, 2025. To accommodate the stampede inquiry, the govt has now extended the panel's term by another month. "Since the commission needs to prioritise the stampede incident and submit its report in a month after completing probe, the term has been extended from Aug 1 to Aug 31, 2025, as it may need extra time to look into the case," the government order stated. The Congress govt has launched a three-tier investigation into the incident — judicial, magisterial and by Criminal Investigation Department (CID). While Justice D'Cunha leads the judicial inquiry, a magisterial probe is being conducted by deputy commissioner of Bengaluru Urban, and CID is holding a parallel investigation. Multiple probes confusing: HD Kumaraswamy Union minister HD Kumaraswamy of JD(S) slammed the govt's approach, calling out the multiple probes as overlapping and confusing. "The govt wants to show that it has taken measures before the high court takes up the suo-motu PIL into the issue. The govt first ordered a magisterial probe, then appointed a commission headed by a retired HC judge, and the case was also handed over to CID. Which report are you going to accept?" he asked.
