'Northern Exposure,' 'Young Sheldon' alum Valerie Mahaffey dead at 71
May 31 (UPI) -- Northern Exposure and Young Sheldon actress Valerie Mahaffey has died at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer.
Mahaffey's publicist, Jillian Roscoe, confirmed the sad news to The Hollywood Reporter Friday.
"I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its endearing actresses. She will be missed," her husband Joseph Kell said in a statement to People.com.
Mahaffey's other credits include Echo 3, Dead to Me, French Exit, Big Sky, Desperate Housewives, Glee and Devious Maids.

Molly Gordon: 'Oh, Hi!' inspired by real heartbreak

Photo by Jim Ruymen/UPI | License Photo July 22 (UPI) -- Molly Gordon says her new dark romantic comedy Oh, Hi!, in theaters Friday, was inspired by real heartbreaks she and writer/director Sophie Brooks experienced. Gordon, 29, plays Iris, a woman who goes away for the weekend with her beau Isaac (Logan Lerman). When Isaac shares he's not interested in being exclusive, Iris leaves him handcuffed to the bed and attempts to convince him they should be a couple. In a recent Zoom interview wtih UPI, Gordon, who shares "story by" credit with Brooks, discussed some of the relationship turmoil that helped inspire the film. "We both were with men that were wonderful but didn't want to have this last closure conversation with us," Gordon said. "So we both were like oh, what if we had forced them to have it? That's how this was born." The misunderstanding about the nature of their relationship stems from both Isaac and Iris not speaking directly. Isaac doesn't want to be considered a jerk and Iris doesn't want to be seen as needy. "I think that we're all so scared of rejection and actually showing our true selves to people that women can sometimes only hear what they want to hear," she said. "And then men cannot be fully honest that they're not interested in somebody just because they don't want to hurt their feelings. I think that's not even gendered." The situation is exacerbated when Iris phones her mother, who encourages her to try to make it work. Then Iris goes down an internet rabbit hole of a relationship podcaster giving women advice on how to keep a man. "We all look on our phones and go, 'I can do this and I can do this and I can change this and I can do this,'" Gordon said. "But if you really sat with yourself, why would you want to force someone to be with you and change something about yourself?" While Gordon would never resort to trapping a romantic partner, she empathized with Iris succumbing to the temptation. "We're not trying to finger wag in this movie," Gordon said. "Sophie and I struggle with this on a daily basis and finding our own inner confidence." While there is a scary version of this concept, like Stephen King's Misery and Gerald's Game, Gordon said she and Brooks resisted suggestions to ramp up the intensity of Oh, Hi! "We got notes in the beginning, like she should murder him or she should do what Kathy Bates does in Misery," Gordon said. "We weren't interested in making a horror film, but we definitely wanted to play with drama and tone because sometimes when you're in a fight with someone, you do feel like you're in a horror movie." Gordon credits Brooks with keeping her from going too unhinged in her performance as Iris, though she has a few intense moments on screen. "Sophie had to reel me in constantly because I haven't gotten the chance to really show this side of myself as an actor," Gordon said. "I was just so ready to throw down and she was like, 'Okay, Molly, we are giving Kathy Bates in Misery. Let's pull it back a little bit.' There were some maniacal laughs on the cutting room floor for sure." The maniacal laughs got cut, but Iris does perform a talent show dance for Isaac. Gordon said intimacy coordinator Shelby Terrell did double duty as choreographer. "What can't she do?" Gordon said. Gordon also recently reprised her role of Claire in The Bear Season 4. One episode saw chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) seek to make amends for breaking up with Claire while he was locked in a refrigerator, leading Gordon to give Carmy credit for eventually getting to the apology. "He does say, 'I'm sorry. I'm so [expletive] sorry' at the end, so I'm going to give Carmy a little justice," Gordon said. "Why it took him a five minute screen conversation to say that, that's his own journey." Gordon previously shared writing and directing credits on Theater Camp, which she developed with Ben Platt, Noah Galvin and Nick Lieberman. She said Oh, Hi! was Brooks' idea. She began helping Brooks as a friend, which evolved into the professional collaboration. "She had the idea: man and woman go on first trip together, he doesn't want to be in a relationship, she holds him hostage," Gordon said. "She had never written for an actor specifically so I would give her notes towards what I was also looking for as an actress." The script was originally written to take place in Ojai, Calif., but had to move to High Falls, N.Y., to stay in budget. Still, the title doubled for the setting and the honeymoon phase of a new relationship. "At the beginning of a relationship, you just look at each other and you're like, 'Hi, hi, hi, hi,'" Gordon said. "Then you start living in silence with your partner." David Geffen's Estranged Husband, Donovan Michaels, Sues Mogul for Breach of Contract
David Geffen's divorce drama has made its way into the public eye after his estranged husband, Donovan Michaels, sued the entertainment mogul for breach of contract. The suit, which was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, accuses Geffen, 82, of exploiting a 'vulnerable, marginalized young gay Black man' as a 'wealthy, powerful white gay billionaire who believed himself untouchable.' The mogul tied the knot with Michaels, a former go-go dancer whose real name is David Armstrong, in 2023 in a private Beverly Hills ceremony. While the pair kept their relationship private, details surrounding their relationship have now been revealed in Michaels' suit. The complaint states that the pair met on the dating website, It also accuses Geffen of paying Michaels $10,000 for sex the night that they met, and, 'like the plot of the movie Trading Places, began treating Michaels as a living social experiment — a trophy to show off to his wealthy friends, under the guise of benevolence.' According to the suit, Geffen knew about Michaels' troubled past — as he grew up in the foster care system — but 'rather than respond with empathy or offer genuine support, Geffen saw Michaels as an object of exploitation.' Over time, the duo's paid sexual relationship developed into a partnership, the lawsuit states, as 'Geffen told Michaels he loved him and the two would treat one another as life partners, share all assets equally, and Geffen would support Michaels financially for life. Michaels gave up his dreams — his modeling career, his independence — to dedicate himself fully to this promise.' Geffen and Michaels got married in 2023 with no prenup, according to the complaint, but 'what Michaels did not know at the time was that this was nothing more than a transaction to Geffen.' Throughout their marriage, the mogul allegedly 'critiqued every aspect of Michaels' appearance and carefully controlled Michaels with respect to all aspects of his body hygiene,' requiring him to get 'painful laser treatments and dental treatments.' The suit also states that Michaels was met with 'back-handed insults and put-downs' about his 'past and lack of sophistication.' In the complaint, Geffen is also accused of demeaning 'sexual access at will, including acts Michaels found degrading.' He also allegedly supplied Michaels with drugs and alcohol as 'tools of coercion — lowering his resistance and increasing his dependency.' This led Michaels to seek treatment after suffering from addiction. Following treatment, Michaels claims he tried to make amends with Geffen, but that he 'did not want a healthier Michaels. He wanted control and submission. He wanted to be the savior, the white knight, and the 'top.'' After Geffen filed for divorce in April 2025, the suit alleges Geffen 'almost immediately breached the oral agreements by denying Michaels full financial support.' A few months later, in June 2025, the lawsuit states that 'while Geffen was hosting his super-wealthy celebrity friends on his superyacht in Venice, Italy, preparing to attend the Bezos [Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez] wedding, he demanded that Michaels immediately vacate the New York residence, which would effectively render Michaels homeless.' 'In addition to evicting Michaels, Geffen also cut him off from his status quo financial support, making it impossible for Michaels to secure an appropriate living situation and provide for his daily necessities,' according to the complaint. THR reached out to Geffen's attorney for comment. Geffen, who has a net worth over $9.1 billion, per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, landed at No. 371 on the list of the world's wealthiest people as of July 22. The mogul also co-founded the label Asylum Records in 1971 before later founding Geffen Records and DGC Records. His motion picture company, Geffen Pictures, also produced a handful of films and TV shows, including Personal Best, Beetlejuice, Interview with the Vampire and Little Shop of Horrors. Then in 1994, he co-founded DreamWorks SKG with Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, before DreamWorks Animation spun off to form a publicly traded company a decade later. Florida official under state investigation after hosting LGBTQ event

File Photo by Terry Schmitt/UPI | License Photo July 22 (UPI) -- A small town elected official in Florida is under investigation by state Attorney General James Uthmeier for hosting a drag show that may have exposed children to a "sexualized performance." Uthmeier announced Tuesday he had subpoenaed Linda Moore, the vice mayor of Vero Beach, over a "Pride Tea Dance" held last month at the Kilted Mermaid, a wine bar she owns in the town on the Atlantic coast. However, it's unclear what charges Moore might face and questions remain concerning Uthmeier's legal basis for the investigation. Uthmeier's office cited evidence that the event was promoted as being open to all ages and included sexualized adult performers who "wore revealing attire and burlesque outfits while interacting with the children." "In Florida, we don't sacrifice the innocence of children for the perversions of some demented adults," Uthmeier said in a statement. The subpoena demands Moore turn over employee schedules, surveillance videos, contracts with performers, ticket sales records, the bar's age-verification protocols and other documents by Aug. 8. Moore told NBC News that the subpoena did not make sense to her because it did not accuse her of a crime. "We have the event every year; it's our gay pride event, and it is all ages," Moore told the news outlet, adding that the bar has hosted it for at least the past five years. "It's a family-friendly event, and then once the drag show actually starts, we tell the parents who have small children that they can't stay for the show." She said that the performances can be a "little racy" but do not include any nudity. Jennifer Pippin, a member of a local chapter of conservative parents group Moms for Liberty, called attention to the events at the Kilted Mermaid on social media. She alleged that Moore had violated Florida's "Protection of Children Act," which was signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2023. However, the law has been held up in court as federal judges have suggested it is likely unconstitutional.
