Political leaders pay homage to Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar
Leaders from across the political spectrum paid tributes to Emperor Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar in Tiruchi on Friday, marking his 1,350th birth anniversary.
A steady stream of visitors from various political parties, organisations and youth groups from Tiruchi and neighbouring districts gathered near the Mutharaiyar statue on Bharathidasan Salai to offer floral tributes.
Deputy Chief Minister and DMK Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin led the party's delegation, accompanied by Ministers K.N. Nehru (Municipal Administration), S. Regupathy (Law), and Siva V. Meyyanathan (Backward Classes Welfare). Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi paid his respects earlier in the day.
From the BJP, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan, and State President Nainar Nagendran also paid their respects along withformer Minister Natham R Viswanathan from the AIADMK, and AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran and visited the memorial complex near the Central Bus Stand. Addressing the media, Mr. Murugan said a memorial for Mutharaiyar would be constructed at a location worthy of his legacy once the National Democratic Alliance forms government in Tamil Nadu. He also announced that the Centre would release a commemorative postal stamp next year in Mutharaiyar's honour.
Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Naam Tamilar Katchi chief coordinator Seeman and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam general secretary N.Anand were also among those who paid homage.
Traffic snarls were reported across several parts of the city, including, Head Post Office junction, Bharathidasan Salai, TVS Tollgate, Sanjeevi Nagar, Cauvery Bridge, Chathiram Bus Stand, and Ponmalai G Corner as a large number of people converged in the city for the occasion.
More than 1,200 police personnel were deployed for security. As per the order of District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, 26 TASMAC liquor outlets and three recreation clubs in and around the city were closed until 6 p.m. to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, Mutharaiyar Ezhuchi Sangam, has welcomed the Union government's decision to conduct a caste-based census. In a press statement, the organisation's honorary president, S. Pannerselvam, urged the government to hold prior consultations with caste-based organisations, citing complexities in classification. He alleged that the State government was issuing caste certificates to Mutharaiyars under various names and demanded that they be issued under the Denotified Tribes (DNT) category. He further urged that DNTs, who currently fall under the Most Backward Classes (MBC) category, be given a separate reservation quota based on their population.

SilverLine or alternative? Kerala's wait for semi-high-speed rail to continue
Kochi: It seems the state's dream of having a semi-high-speed rail line is unlikely to become a reality soon, with neither Centre nor the state govt taking any concrete steps to take any of the two proposals forward. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The discussion chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan held with Union railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier this week did not cover either the SilverLine proposal or the alternative semi-high-speed rail project proposed by Metroman E Sreedharan. As railways is yet to take a favourable stand on Sreedharan's proposal even after four months, the state govt's special representative in Delhi, K V Thomas, has requested Sreedharan to meet both Vaishnaw and railway officials. However, Sreedharan's stand is that he cannot approach Centre unless the state govt officially entrusts him to do so, demanding that the project proposal be taken up for further action. It seems the state govt is not planning to hold any further discussions with Sreedharan regarding the alternative proposal. The state govt submitted a draft of the semi-high-speed rail line proposal, prepared by Sreedharan, to the Union govt on Feb 10. The alternative proposal was submitted after the railway ministry informed that it could not approve the SilverLine project proposed by K-Rail. "It's been four months since the state govt submitted Sreedharan's proposal to Centre. But during the meeting, the proposal wasn't even mentioned or taken up for discussion. The only way to revive the project now is through pressure from Sreedharan himself. I've requested him to meet Vaishnav or railway officials directly to explain the project's benefits," said Thomas, who was present alongside Vijayan during the meeting with the railway minister. He also expressed unhappiness over Vijayan's recent statement expressing hope over SilverLine. "The chief minister's recent statement that SilverLine will become a reality indicates that the govt is still focused on that project. State govt representatives have not held any discussions with me before or after their recent meeting with the railway minister. I cannot approach Centre directly regarding my proposal unless the state govt officially requests me to take the initiative. If they do, I am ready to hold discussions with Centre," Sreedharan told TOI. Minister V Abdurahman, who is in charge of railways, said the govt was not opposed to considering Sreedharan's proposal. He, however, did not give a clear answer when asked whether the state would request Sreedharan to hold further discussions with Centre. "Kerala is open to implementing either the SilverLine or Sreedharan's alternative project. SilverLine is not a closed chapter," he said.

Minister of State L. Murugan meets Vietnamese delegation
India and Vietnam on Thursday (June 5, 2025) agreed to step up cooperation in the media and entertainment sector during a meeting held between Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L. Murugan, and a delegation of high-ranking officials from Vietnam. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Nguyen Trong Nghia, Polit Bureau member of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and chairperson of the CPV's Central Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation. The meeting was also attended by I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju, and other senior officials of the Ministry. 'India and Vietnam share traditionally close and warm bilateral relations. In 2022, the two countries celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The India - Vietnam bilateral relations were elevated in the year 2016 to the level of 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Vietnam,' a government release said. 'Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia lauded India's impressive growth as the world's fourth largest economy and emphasised the strong friendship and partnership between both the countries,' it said, adding that it was proposed to have programmes for enhanced cooperation between media organisations of both sides.
