Unemployed Woman Loses RM62,000 To Phone Scam
JERTIH, June 27 (Bernama) -- A woman lost RM62,000 after being duped by a phone scam syndicate posing as a police officer yesterday afternoon.
Besut district police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the 19-year-old unemployed woman answered a phone call belonging to her father from an individual who introduced himself as a representative from Touch 'n Go headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
'The individual claimed that the victim's father had a RM25,000 summons related to a Touch 'n Go account, then the call was supposedly connected to the Perak police contingent headquarters and spoke to a police officer.
'The victim was further shocked when he was told her that a bank account had been opened in her father's name involved in a money laundering and drug case,' he said in a statement today.
Azamuddin said the suspect asked the victim to pay RM60,000 if she wanted to clear his name and because she was afraid, the victim sold jewellery belonging to her mother, who is a retired teacher, to get money for the payment as instructed.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, he said.

Further Investigation On Explosion In Ipoh Handed Over To Police- Saarani
IPOH, June 27 (Bernama) -- The state government has handed over investigation into the explosion and tremor incident that occurred on June 18 to the police, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. He said that so far, initial investigations have been conducted but have not found any specific cause or evidence that can be linked to the incident. "The investigation is continuing, but has not been found anything specific so we cannot comment further... and (now) the police are conducting the investigation because it is related to state security. "There is only one agency (conducting the investigation), which is the police. "What the police get is what will be reported to the state," he said when met after officiating the 2025 International Culinary Competition at Bulatan Azlan Shah today. He said the investigation would continue until the cause of the incident was found because it was the second time in Perak, and similar incidents also occurred in Selangor. Meanwhile, Perak Minerals and Geosciences Department (JMG) director, Nizarulikram Abdul Rahim, in a statement today, said according to his research, mysterious explosions have been reported all over the world for a long time without a definite explanation. "This sound is described from the sky with a moderate to strong explosion, and sometimes shakes windows and walls of buildings. "Mysterious explosions in Ipoh have occurred in 2012, 2018, 2024 and most recently on June 18, 2025 at about 10:30 am and have been determined not to be the result of quarrying activities, bomb tests or sonic booms from jet aircraft," according to the statement. He said initial studies by the Perak JMG showed that the area where the public heard the explosion was within the same range, from Chemor, Klebang, Meru in the north to around Tambun and Gunung Rapat, in the south.

Enhance Enforcement, Prosecution To Curb Haj, Umrah Package Scams - Mohd Na'im
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- The enforcement and prosecution of fraudulent haj and umrah packages must be stepped up and carried out more decisively, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He said tougher prosecution and harsher penalties could serve as a lesson to offenders and help prevent similar incidents in the future. Mohd Na'im said Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), the body overseeing haj affairs, has no mandate to initiate legal action. "I believe enforcement is crucial. We've established a special task force involving the police, the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry (MOTAC), and TH, but under the TH Act, they've no enforcement powers. "TH can only lodge a police report, after which the prosecution will take action. So, while there are already prosecutions and fairly heavy penalties, what we need now is stronger enforcement and firmer prosecution," he told reporters after the national-level Maal Hijrah 2025 celebrations at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here today. Mohd Na'im emphasised that any TH-licensed company found to be involved in fraud will have its licence revoked, adding that MOTAC holds similar powers over umrah agencies. Citing Saudi Arabia's strict enforcement measures, he said the country has successfully prevented the entry of haj pilgrims without valid visas through extensive monitoring and operations. "I had a discussion this morning with Saudi Arabia's Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr Tawfig Fawzan Muhammed Al-Rabiah, who informed me that the ministry implemented stricter enforcement this year, including mounting raids on hotels and accommodation premises," he said. Media reports cited the harrowing experience faced by 47 Malaysian senior citizens who were duped by an agent and forced to take dangerous routes to reach Makkah after they arrived in Jeddah to perform the haj.
