Pappa Karkhanis
MUMBAI: Former
Mumbai wicketkeeper-batter
Vijay alias 'Papa' Karkhanis passed away on Sunday morning at his residence in Borivali. He was 86. Pappa played for the famed
Shivaji Park Gymkhana
and Central Bank in local cricket. As per old-timers, he was a dashing batter and good wicketkeeper. Karkhanis played seven first-class matches for Mumbai in the late 60s. He played for two decades for Shivaji Park Gymkhana in a team which had numerous Mumbai greats.
Karkhanis was a close friend of batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. "He was the most loved guy in the team. He used to keep everyone in splits. I was supposed to meet him at (my) annual get-together on the 14th (May) which is postponed for now," Gavaskar told TOI.

Karkhanis was amongst the first few coaches who saw potential in India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma. "When Rohit was just 14, he was selected for the
Mumbai Cricket
Association's summer camp for the Borivali Centre. At that time, Papa was the coach there. He told me that Rohit has a great future for Mumbai. He was such a lovely human being. So sad that he is no more," said Rohit's childhood coach Dinesh Lad.

Who's that IPL player?
Interestingly, in Oct 2020, Karkhanis survived covid despite being hospitalised for 45 days after being struck by the deadly virus at the age of 80
"He was a good 'keeper-bat, and kept everyone in the dressing room in good spirits. He was a good team-man. He was the No 1 wicketkeeper of a strong SPG team in those days," former Mumbai captain Milind Rege, who passed away in Feb this year, had once told this paper about Karkhanis.

Karkhanis played two sterling knocks of 52 & 43 to help Bombay beat Madras on the basis of first innings lead in the 1967-68
Ranji Trophy
final at the Brabourne Stadium. Papa along with Bombay skipper Manohar Hardikar (73 & 65 not out) tackled Madras' ace spinners S Venkataraghavan and Vaman Kumar. Hardikar and Eknath Solkar defied the Madras attack in the post-tea session on the last day, which helped Bombay retain the Ranji Trophy for the tenth successive season.
'He was swift behind the wickets to the likes of Ramakant Desai, Baloo Gupte and others,' said veteran cricket commentator Milind Wagle.

Why are Israel's football clubs playing in Serbia?

. Though Maccabi Tel Aviv's name comes first on UEFA 's fixture list, neither they nor opponents Dinamo Kiev will be playing at home in their Europa League qualifier over successive Thursdays in August. While the clubs play domestic matches in Israel and Ukraine respectively, European football governors UEFA have deemed the countries unsafe for continental competition. As a result, the first leg on August 21 will be played in the TSC Arena in Backa Topola, Serbia, as were their previous European games this term. The team, like many other Israeli sporting clubs, has also played in Belgrade, with Serbia becoming a home away from home. Marko Begovic, an associate professor in sport management at Molde University in Norway and author of the book "Sports Policy and Politics in the Western Balkans" told DW there were three main reasons why Serbia ticked the necessary boxes. "Firstly, Serbia enjoys stable diplomatic relations with Israel and has a tradition of cooperation that makes such an arrangement politically viable. Second, Serbia maintains relative neutrality, exercising political ambiguity in these conflicts [the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine] and Belgrade represents a politically acceptable compromise in this regard. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! Read More Undo And the third is that Serbia possess the necessary sporting infrastructure. " Are sporting bans the answer? Serbia is not a member of NATO and Begovic said that, given the long-term policy aim of neutrality in international affairs, and the fact the population is much more concerned with the war between Russia and Ukraine than the one between Israel and Hamas, there are few objections to hosting Israeli teams. "If you look at the wider region, other republics of former Yugoslavia have been hosting Israeli clubs, not only in football, but in basketball as well. So it is not an issue. I would say this is part of institutional memory of the former Yugoslavia," he said. Part of that institutional memory is based in antipathy towards sporting sanctions for political or military actions. Yugoslavia, of which Serbia was a part, faced an almost total sporting ban in the early 1990s, which took in the Olympics, the football World Cup and all manner of other competitions. Russia is currently banned from all UEFA and FIFA tournaments but their national football team continue to play friendlies, generally against teams less hostile to their invasion of Ukraine, including a number of African sides and Serbia. The country is also banned from the Olympics, though some of their athletes compete under a neutral banner, and from a host of other international sporting competitions. Ukrainian sides like Dynamo Kiev are free to compete in most sports and will host the second leg at the Lublin Arena in Poland, with Ukraine's European club competition entrants playing at various venues across Europe. Is UEFA becoming more political? Palestine's national football team is recognized by FIFA and the athletes more broadly by the International Olympic Committee. Similarly Israel, as it stands, is still an active participant on the international sporting stage and will, for example, send a team to basketball's Eurobasket tournament that starts in September. The country sent a team to the Paris Olympics in 2024 and is to send athletes to the Winter Olympics in 2026. But a banner reading "stop killing children, stop killing civilians" was allowed by UEFA and held up by victims of current conflicts, including Palestinian children, at the recent UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, hinting at a more intense spotlight in the world's most popular sport. "For now, this is our decision. It is very difficult for me to comment on what could happen in the future," UEFA President Alexander Ceferin said in an interview with Slovenian public TV station Odmevi the day after the match, opening the door in the eyes of some for a potential ban. He added that the "issue of Israel's participation in UEFA competitions is a legitimate question." But Ceferin also re-iterated that "in principle, I am not an advocate of not allowing athletes to compete," saying that the Russia ban had made little material difference. It's a position Begovic shares. "There has been a very selective approach in sanctioning and banning in sports," he explained. "But either way, the [Ukraine] war is not any closer to an end. The same goes for other war zones. Banning and sanctioning sports will not bring wars to the end. Sports has a limit in that regard. I think sometimes we are expecting too much from sports." Must sporting chiefs take sides? But, for some, including the EU's sports commissioner, Glenn Micallef, allowing Israel to remain on the global sporting stage while they continue to exacerbate the dire situation in Gaza, is avoiding the issue. "When it comes to sports, I think there should be no space in sporting events for those who do not share our values," he told Politico, without directly naming Israel. "Sport is a tool that we use to promote peace, through which we promote human rights." One could argue that this reading of sport's place within politics has been mostly absent in deed, if not in word, in recent years. Within the last two decades, football's World Cup has been hosted by Russia and Qatar, while Russia and China have hosted Olympic Games. In a world of significant geopolitical challenges, sporting organizations are increasingly forced into political decisions that most would rather avoid.

49ers reportedly acquire wide receiver Skyy Moore in trade with Chiefs

The San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement to acquire wide receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs , according to the Associated Press. The deal, pending Moore's physical, involves a swap of 2027 sixth- and seventh-round draft picks. A person familiar with the trade confirmed the details but requested anonymity since the transaction is not yet finalised, reported AP. Over 36 career games, he has tallied 43 receptions for 494 yards and one touchdown. Injuries derailed his 2024 campaign, as he failed to record a single catch due to a core muscle issue. Still, he has shown flashes of promise, including a touchdown reception in Kansas City's Super Bowl LVII win over Philadelphia and, more recently, an 88-yard punt return for a score in a preseason game against Seattle. Live Events San Francisco's receiver depth chart is currently in turmoil. Brandon Aiyuk remains sidelined until at least Week 6 while recovering from major knee surgery. Fellow starter Jauan Jennings has missed most of training camp with a calf injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan also confirmed this week that Demarcus Robinson is facing a three-game suspension, pending appeal, after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge in July. The 49ers' struggles extend beyond their top options. Rookie Jordan Watkins is sidelined with a high ankle sprain, while second-year receiver Jacob Cowing has been hampered by a hamstring injury since the start of camp. Cowing briefly returned to practice last week but aggravated the injury on Tuesday and was held out again Wednesday. Moore's addition provides San Francisco with much-needed depth and special teams potential as the regular season approaches.

Now, Gill's a smash hit with brands

Gill MUMBAI: Indian cricket's latest blue-eyed boy, Shubman Gill , is the new favourite with brands. His stellar performance in the India-England Test series, both as captain and batsman, had already bolstered his brand value. Now, Gill's selection for the Asia Cup as vice-captain will only give further impetus to his brand equity. A Gen Z with much of his career ahead of him, Gill has all the chops a brand looks for. "Gill's brand value has appreciated by 30%-40% post the India-England series. His brand fees will increase anywhere in the range of 25%-50% depending on the kind of brand approaching him," Neeraj Jha, senior sports analyst and commentator, told TOI. From automobiles to global luxury brands, queries for Gill have shot up from an average of three to four per month to about 10-15 now, sources aware of discussions said. Gill currently charges endorsement fees in the range of Rs 4-5 crore for one brand per year. That can now easily go up to anywhere between Rs 6-8 crore, said Neerav Tomar, managing director and CEO at IOS Sports. Another analyst said that a few of his earlier deals were in the range of Rs 2-Rs 3.5 crore. "Gill already endorses close to 20 brands, and this number should go up. Youthful brands will seek new faces. Gill is the new Virat Kohli ," Tomar said. Gill's team, however, declined to comment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo The cricketer bagged a few big deals before the Test series. Tyre major MRF and global eyewear brand Oakley (for India) signed Gill as their brand ambassadors. Gill also expanded his associations with Casio and Coca-Cola during the year. From about eight brand associations in 2023, Gill's brand portfolio nearly doubled to 16 in 2025. The cricketer is estimated to have earned about Rs 40 crore in endorsement earnings in 2024. "A lot of MNCs are looking to sign Gill. Small brands can't afford him. His fees will only go up if he keeps on delivering," said Amitesh Shah, founder and CEO at sports, media, and entertainment company Legaxy, who estimates Gill's brand value to see a boost of over 40%. Sources said that Gill is "selective" about his brand partnerships, ensuring alignment with his values and career journey. Going ahead, perenniality (ability to deliver across all cricket formats) will be key for Gill to bag big brand deals, said Sandeep Goyal, chairman at Redifussion. "Perenniality leads to continued visibility, which is key to the endorsement game," said Goyal.
