Man jailed for smashing pint glass over love rival's head
A man who walked into a restaurant and smashed a pint glass over his love rival's head has been jailed for 14 months.
Jealous Liam Casey admitted the assault which took place at The Mad Italian eatery.
Grimsby Crown Court heard how Casey, 37, went into the restaurant in Hessle on November 12, 2023 and shouted 'You have been sh****** my bird.'
He struck the man once over the head and then again a second time during which the pint glass shattered.
Prosecuting, Michael Masson said Casey had eight convictions for 11 offences, the last of which was in 2016 also for grievous bodily harm.
The prosecutor said the woman involved is no longer with the complainant, who needed stitches to his forehead and ear.
Mitigating, Shebanee Devadasan, told how Casey, of Roland Avenue, Hull, had been in custody and on a tagged curfew for a considerable time before the sentencing hearing at Grimsby. She said he has a supportive relationship with his mother and he has two dependent children.
However, The Mirror reports that Judge Gurdial Singh said the attack was 'an utterly disgraceful assault.'
He said it was deliberate striking on two occasions with a weapon. Having viewed the CCTV footage from the restaurant, the judge said: 'It is crystal clear what he does.
'You go into that restaurant and within seconds using an old-style pint glass, strike him and then strike him again which is when it shattered.
'It must have been awful for people to see, let alone for the people involved.'
He said the words he uttered in confronting the man 'revealed the motive.'
Before jailing Casey, the judge added: 'He was bleeding badly. They were very unpleasant wounds you caused.'

Teen thug jailed after brutally stabbing boy walking home from Glasgow mosque
The court heard the victim had been at a class at a mosque and then walked through the park before being viciously attacked by Junior Cameron. A teenage thug who brutally attacked a 13-year-old boy in a murder bid has been locked up. Junior Cameron, 18, struck his victim with a knife in Glasgow's Queen's Park on March 8 2024. Cameron also hurled a racist remark at the boy during the assault which later left him unconscious. Cameron pleaded guilty today at the High Court in Glasgow to attempted murder. The court heard that the victim had been at a class at a mosque and then walked through the park. Intoxicated dad-of-one Cameron, of the city's Barmulloch, later approached the boy and shouted at him. Prosecutor Lindsay Dalziel said: "Cameron punched him on the head. The boy tried to get away but Cameron grabbed him and took him to the ground. "He then repeatedly punched and kicked him on the head and body while calling him a 'P*** b******'." The pair struggled with each other and Cameron walked away while putting away an object - believed to be a knife - in his pocket. Emergency services were called by a member of the public who came across the boy who "passed out". He was taken to hospital where he was found to have suffered three wounds to his upper back each of which required four stitches. The boy has since suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, nightmares and attends a trauma clinic. Miss Dalziel told the court that matters arose amid claims that Cameron was told by others that the boy had an "altercation" with his sister in the recent past. Thomas Ross KC, defending, said: "He is facing a very serious charge with the prospect of detention." Sentence was deferred pending background reports until September by Judge Lord Colbeck who remanded Cameron in custody meantime. The judge said: "You have pleaded guilty to a very serious matter and a custodial sentence is inevitable in this case."

Scots tourist dies after falling from height at Ibiza Rocks Hotel
Evan Thomson, 26, died in the grounds of the hotel on the party island last week. A Scots tourist has died after falling from height at a hotel in Ibiza. Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, was staying at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel when the tragedy unfolded on Monday, July 7. Paramedics were called to the scene but he was pronounced dead in the grounds of the hotel. He is understood to have been celebrating his 26th birthday with pals on the party island. His family have since been told he did not suffer in his final moments. His devastated mum Lel Kellighan shared the tragic news in a Facebook post on Sunday night. She wrote: 'I'm absolutely heartbroken to write and tell you all, earlier this week my son Evan was in a tragic accident whilst on holiday with his friends in Ibiza and sadly passed away. "We are all absolutely broken. Evan is survived by his mother Lel, dad Graham, sister Teila, girlfriend Remi Duncan, and many close friends including James Shand. Spanish authorities are understood to be investigating the accident. A spokeswoman for Ibiza Rocks Hotel said: 'This is a truly tragic and extremely sad situation. 'Our senior management team onsite did everything possible to help the police with their investigation into events leading up to Evan's death, and to provide constant support from our customer services manager to Evan's friends. 'That has included them having 24-hour access to our senior manager for any help or questions and giving them permission to pass on her mobile number to Evan's family should they wish to call us direct. Nine arrests at TRNSMT Sunday as suspects detained over sex assault and cop attacks
It takes the total number of arrests in the Glasgow Green festival at the weekend to 19. A TRNSMT reveller was arrested over an alleged sex assault yesterday as Police Scotland detained nine festival-goers on the final day of the Glasgow Green bash. Music lovers descended on Glasgow city centre to see Snow Patrol bringing the curtain down on the third day of the festival on Sunday July 13. But officers policing the event made nine arrests for offences ranging from sexual assault and police assault to possession of weapons. Police added revellers at the festival - also headlined by 50 Cent and Biffy Clyro on Friday and Saturday - were detained over common assault. Seven people were arrested on day one, when 50 Cent and The Script topped the bill. Four others were detained on day two, when Biffy and Fontaines D.C. were playing. One man had been arrested and charged after allegedly leafleting near the festival while wearing a T-shirt showing support for the proscribed group Palestine Action. A statement released by Police Scotland on Monday said: "Nine people have been arrested and charged in connection with various offences in and around the area where TRNSMT festival was held at Glasgow Green on Sunday, 13 July, 2025. "The offences included police assault, assault, sexual assault, culpable and reckless behaviour, hate crime and possession of weapons. Reports will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
