Defense manufacturing startup Hadrian closes $260 million funding round led by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund

CNBC4 days ago
Defense manufacturing startup Hadrian on Thursday announced the closing of $260 million Series C funding round led by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund and Lux Capital.
The machine parts company said it will use the funding to build a new 270,000 square foot factory in Mesa, Arizona, and expand its Torrance, California, location as it looks to beef up its shipbuilding and naval defense capabilities.
"What we really need in this country is this quantum leap above China's manufacturing model," said CEO Chris Power in an interview with CNBC's Morgan Brennan. "It's about supercharging the worker versus replacing them."
Defense tech startups like Hadrian are disrupting the mainstay defense contracting industry, which is led by leaders such as Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, and battling it out to boost U.S. defense production while scooping up Department of Defense contracts.
Hadrian said the Arizona space will be four times the size of its California facility and start operations by Christmas. The factory will create 350 local jobs. The Hawthrone, California-based company said it is working on four to five new facilities to support production over the next year to support Department of Defense needs.
Hadrian said it uses robotics and artificial intelligence to automate factories that can "supercharge American workers."
Power said demand is rapidly growing, but the lack of U.S.-based talent is a major hurdle to building American dominance in shipbuilding and submarines.
Using its tools, the company said it can train workers within 30 days, making them 10 times more productive. Its workforce includes ex-marines and former nurses who have never set foot in a factory.
"We have to do a lot more ... but certainly we're able to keep up with the scale right now, and grateful to our team and customers for letting us go and do that," he said. "As a country, we have to treat this like a national security crisis, not just the economics of manufacturing."
The fresh raise also includes investments from Andreessen Horowitz and new stakeholders such as Brad Gerstner's Altimeter Capital.
The company closed a $92 million funding round in late 2023.

Wu administration steps up pressure for Revs stadium mitigation

'While these meetings have been cordial,' Shen wrote, referencing the negotiations, 'the information you have shared remains conceptual with none of the technical detail and analysis needed as a baseline to properly assess the impact of your proposal or negotiate a fair agreement for the City of Boston.' Shen emphasized to Bilello in the letter that addressing 'community mitigation is not optional, nor to be taken lightly.' Advertisement A spokesperson for the Kraft Group issued a statement saying that the company was surprised by the letter and that it is inconsistent with the positive tone and numerous productive discussions both sides have had since they started meeting in February. The Wu-Kraft discussions are happening amid a political backdrop: Wu is running for reelection this year, and her principal challenger is Josh Kraft, a former nonprofit executive whose father, Robert Kraft, is lead executive and owner of the Kraft Group and its two pro sports teams. Two of Josh Kraft's brothers are also top executives there. Josh Kraft had said he would recuse himself from any stadium discussions if elected. Advertisement The As part of The May 1 deadline came and went without an outside mediator participating. But now, judging from Shen's letter, that phase is imminent. In an attachment to the letter, the Wu administration outlines a series of concerns it would like to see addressed, or at least analyzed. They include: MBTA connections and capacity for those attending games and concerts, off-site parking options, the effects on water quality in the Mystic and Boston Harbor, flood resilience, noise impacts, and estimates of the number of construction and permanent jobs. Advertisement City officials also want a forecast of the impact that the nearly 25,000-seat stadium would have on rival concert venues in Boston — TD Garden, Fenway Park, and the Leader Bank Pavilion. (That's one of the issues that came up during the State House negotiations over the legislation.) Shen, in his letter, again draws a parallel between a mitigation agreement valued at $68 million Several of the questions that Shen raises presumably will be tackled by an outside consultant, Watertown-based VHB, that the Kraft Group has asked to address transportation and other related issues around the stadium, its construction, and future impact. 'Throughout this process the Kraft Group has operated in good faith and has supplied Boston with every piece of information the city has requested,' said Kraft Group spokesperson Anisha Chakrabarti. 'During our many meetings and conversations, representatives from Boston have not expressed these concerns with our process or with our efforts.' Chakrabarti added that Kraft Group executives are 'deeply disappointed that politics and grandstanding seem to have taken place over thoughtful analysis and collaboration. This simply impedes progress and economic development for the City of Everett, the City of Boston, and the Commonwealth.' Advertisement Jon Chesto can be reached at

Figma's Dylan Field will cash out about $60M in IPO, with Index, Kleiner, Greylock, Sequoia all selling, too

When Figma announced its initial hoped-for price range on Monday ($25-$28), it also revealed an unusual decision for its highly anticipated IPO. It will allow existing shareholders to sell more shares than the company plans to sell, by a high ratio. The company plans to offer about 12.5 million shares. Yet existing shareholders will be allowed to cash out of nearly 24.7 million shares, it said. In addition, should this IPO be as hot as everyone thinks it will be, existing shareholders will get the option to sell, collectively, up to 5.5 million more shares. Figma founder CEO Dylan Field has disclosed that he plans to sell 2.35 million shares. At the midrange he'll be cashing out of over $62 million. (That might be a much higher number if the IPO prices above $28, too.) Even with that sale, he will still own an enormous number of shares and control the company. He will hold 74% of the voting rights after the IPO. This is thanks to supervoting rights of 15 votes per share for the Class B stock he controls, plus the right to vote the Class B shares of his co-founder, Evan Wallace, the company says in its S-1. Figma's biggest venture investors are all cashing out some shares, as well, including Index, Greylock, Kleiner Perkins, and Sequoia. Should the demand be there for the over-allotment, they will cash out 1.7 million to 3.3 million shares apiece. That should allow them to return some cash to their investors in this liquidity-starved venture market. It should be noted, though, that each of these investors is keeping the lion's share of their Figma holdings. One way to interpret this largely secondary sale is that if the company hadn't opened up share sales to existing investors, it might not have had enough shares to meet the demand. San Francisco | REGISTER NOW As you might expect, the company will not make money from the shares its stockholders sell. But should it price above its announced range (as often happens with hot IPOs), Figma will raise more, as will its shareholders. Prior to pricing, IPO experts expected Figma to sell around $1.5 billion worth of stock. Should it price above range and exceed that, Figma would be the biggest IPO of 2025 to date. The IPO could happen next week, so we shall soon see. Figma declined further comment.
