Danve alleges rice meant for schoolchildren diverted abroad, seeks criminal action

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Ambadas Danve, the leader of opposition in the legislative council, launched an attack on state govt on Wednesday, alleging large-scale corruption in the transportation of govt-supplied rice intended for schoolchildren, with a portion of the stock allegedly diverted to African countries. Danve challenged the state to send a responsible representative for an open "discussion on corruption" at a time and place of its choosing. "Let us see if this govt even knows who is diverting rice from the mouths of our children and smuggling it straight to Africa," he said, calling it a "new model of corruption." Danve also sent a letter regarding the issue to civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal. Chhagan Bhujbal, however, said he had not received any letter from Danve on the issue raised. "Had I received a letter I would have immediately responded," Bhujbal said. He added, "I think that the issue that he has raised concerns the child and women development dept. The issue is not connected with my department," said Bhujbal. In his letter, Danve wrote that a registered charitable trust was awarded a transport contract for rice in the Mumbai district despite the transport contract being a commercial activity, while the trust was originally established for social work. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Finland: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House Search Now Undo He claimed the trust's majority shareholder also acted as its sub-contractor for transportation, in violation of rules. Vehicles purchased with the trust's funds were allegedly owned by the same individual, and profits from operations were diverted to his personal account instead of being used for social causes. Danve further alleged that funds received by the trust were transferred into the shareholder's account as an unsecured loan without the charity commissioner's approval. "This shows he has treated the organisation like his personal household," he charged. The leader of opposition also accused the contractor of under-pricing services in Mumbai, raising suspicion over the source of the balance payments. He alleged that rice supplied under the Prime Minister's Nutrition Scheme for school students was being siphoned off to the black market and exported abroad. "I have credible information that a network has been set up to send this rice overseas, especially to African countries," Danve claimed. He added that no social work was carried out under the trust's banner and pointed out that Railways terminated the trust's contracts prematurely in Oct 2023, and the Railways even went ahead and forfeited the trust's deposit. "Such organisations should not be awarded any tenders. How, then, did these people become the beloved beneficiaries of Mahayuti govt?" he asked. Danve demanded a forensic audit of the organisation's accounts and the cancellation of its registration. He also sought criminal action against those found guilty in what he described as a tender scam. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Delhi's Big Step To Clean Up Yamuna - A Rs 917-Crore Plan Approved

New Delhi: In a significant step toward cleaning the Yamuna, the Delhi Jal Board has approved projects worth Rs 917 crore to boost the capital's sewage treatment capacity by 51.5 million gallons per day. The move is expected to sharply reduce the flow of untreated water into the river, one of the biggest contributors to its pollution. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier directed the Delhi government to nearly double its sewage treatment capacity to 1,500 million gallons per day by 2028 as part of the ongoing efforts to clean the river. Major Upgrades at Yamuna Vihar and Keshopur The largest expansion will take place at Yamuna Vihar, where the capacity of the existing sewage treatment plant will rise from 25 MGD to 40 MGD. Alongside this, a new 15 MGD plant will be built on the site. At Keshopur, the current 12 MGD facility will be upgraded to 18 MGD. South Delhi Plants to Get a Boost Five sewage plants in South Delhi will also see capacity upgrades under the new plan, further strengthening the city's wastewater management network. Long-Term Operations & Maintenance Each project will include operations and maintenance for 11-12 years, ensuring sustained efficiency and compliance with environmental norms. A Cleaner Yamuna in Sight? Officials say the expanded infrastructure will significantly cut the volume of untreated sewage entering the Yamuna, a problem that has plagued the river for decades. Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that sustained investment in sewage treatment is critical to reviving the Yamuna's ecosystem and improving water quality for communities living along its banks. Cleaning the Yamuna has long been one of the BJP-led Delhi government's big promises, framed as both an environmental necessity and a public health goal. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma have repeatedly said the river's revival will be a key test of their term in office.

India plans to open uranium sector to private players to boost nuclear expansion

The move aims to attract billions of dollars and support the country's ambitious goal to expand nuclear power capacity 12 fold by 2047 India is planning to open its uranium mining, import, and processing sector to private companies, ending a decades-long state monopoly, according to a Reuters report, citing government sources. This move aims to attract billions of dollars and support the country's ambitious goal to expand nuclear power capacity 12 fold by 2047. In April, Reuters had reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is also planning to relax requirements to allow foreign players to take a minority stake in power plants. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Currently, India's government tightly controls uranium mining and processing due to concerns over nuclear material misuse, radiation safety, and strategic security. It will, however, continue to manage spent uranium reprocessing and plutonium waste handling, in line with international norms. To meet rising demand for nuclear fuel amid this expansion, the government is drafting a regulatory framework that would allow private Indian firms to participate in mining, importing, and processing uranium. The policy is expected to be announced within the current fiscal year, reported Reuters. In addition, private companies may be permitted to supply critical control system equipment for nuclear power plants, sources said. Globally, countries such as Canada, South Africa, and the United States already allow private firms to mine and process uranium. Domestic supply not enough According to government data, India has an estimated 76,000 tonnes of uranium — enough to power 10,000 megawatts of nuclear energy for 30 years. However, sources cautioned that domestic reserves would cover only about 25% of the fuel needed to support the country's planned nuclear expansion. The remaining demand would require imports, along with a significant boost to uranium processing capacity. In its February 1 budget announcement, the government revealed its intention to open up the nuclear sector, though it did not provide specifics. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The move has since prompted several major Indian conglomerates to begin drafting investment plans. Still, experts warn that implementing the policy may face hurdles, as revising existing legislation could prove legally and politically complex. 'It's a major and bold initiative by the Indian Government which is critical for achieving the target,' Reuters quoted Charudatta Palekar, independent power sector consultant, as saying. 'The challenge will be to define quickly the rules of engagement with private sector,' Palekar added. New Delhi will have to change five laws, including the ones regulating mining and electricity sectors and India's foreign direct investment policy to enable private participation in many identified activities, the sources said.
