The players with the most PFA Player of the Year awards
Mohamed Salah has been named as the winner of the PFA Players' Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season. The Liverpool winger has been recognised with English football's greatest individual honour, voted as the Premier League's finest footballer by his fellow professionals. Salah has been honoured after a record-breaking season for the Reds. He led the Premier League for both goals and assists as Liverpool won the title, with his 47 goal involvements a record for a 38-game season. The Egyptian's accolade is his third PFA recognition, following previous triumphs in the 2017/18 and 2021/22 seasons. Following Salah's success, we've ranked the players with the most PFA Player of the Year awards. Mark Hughes (2) Mark Hughes is one of seven players to have won the award multiple times, and the first to achieve this feat. The Welshman won the award for the first time in 1988/89, his first season after returning to Manchester United after a spell in Europe. Hughes scored 16 goals in all competitions and was voted the league's best player despite an 11th-place finish for the Red Devils. Two seasons later, he won the award again. Hughes scored 21 times, including both goals, as United beat Barcelona in the 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup final. Alan Shearer (2) Alan Shearer twice won the award during a prolific period in the mid-nineties. Shearer first won the award in 1994/95 after firing Blackburn Rovers to the Premier League title. He scored 34 league goals as Rovers edged out Manchester United in the title race. Shearer is the only player to have won the award when representing different clubs. His second accolade came in 1996/97, after winning the Premier League's Golden Boot during his debut season at Newcastle United. Thierry Henry (2) Thierry Henry was a cut above the competition during his time at Arsenal and became the first footballer to win the PFA Player of the Year Award in back-to-back seasons. Henry won his first award in 2002/03, after scoring 23 goals and providing 20 assists. He remains the only player to have reached 20+ on both metrics in the same season, with his 20 assists still a single-season record (shared with Kevin De Bruyne). Henry retained the award in 2003/04 after scoring 30 goals in Arsenal's 'Invincibles' campaign. The Frenchman won the Golden Boot as the Gunners lifted the title without losing a game. Cristiano Ronaldo (2) Cristiano Ronaldo repeated Henry's feat after PFA successes in 2006/07 and 2007/08. The first of those seasons saw Ronaldo become the first player to win all four major PFA and FWA awards in the same season, as he was awarded the PFA Player's Player, Fans' Player, Young Player of the Year awards, and the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year award. A year later, he scored 42 goals in all competitions to lead Manchester United to Premier League and Champions League success. Alongside his second PFA award, Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or for the first time. Gareth Bale (2) Gareth Bale emerged as the Premier League's leading light with PFA awards in 2010/11 and 2012/13. His performances during the second of those campaigns attracted interest from Real Madrid, who broke the world transfer record to sign the Welsh winger from Spurs. Kevin De Bruyne (2) Kevin De Bruyne was honoured with the PFA prize for the first time in 2019/20, after equalling the Premier League's single-season assist record (20). He retained the award the following season after a crucial role in Manchester City's title success. Mohamed Salah (3) Mohamed Salah has become the first player in history to win the PFA Player of the Year award on three occasions. Salah's sensational debut season at Liverpool earned him his first award in 2017/18, after scoring 44 goals in all competitions for the Reds. He was recognised again in 2021/22 after leading the Premier League for goals and assists, before adding a third for his record-breaking feats in 2024/25. Black Cats Hammer home advantage
The game I attended was at Sunderland where West Ham arrived to show the newcomers what the Premier League was all about. The Black Cats were singularly unimpressed, Graham Potter's side looked as lumpen and leggy as the opposition look sprightly and energetic. Sunderland coach Regis Le Bris fielded seven debutants from the start and his team were anything but shy and nervous on their first outing. Take out the wily Granit Xhaka and the remaining five midfielders and attackers in red and white had an average age of less than 21. Only Simon Adingra had ever played in the Premier League before. They still out-ran and out-thought West Ham. The 21-year-old Habib Diarra caught the eye with his unstoppable runs from deep in midfield but it felt like two different generations playing against each other; not to put too fine a point on it, many of the West Ham players looked old in comparison, a phrase every footballer hates to hear. Sunderland are better than I thought but even with a 3-0 opening win and the excitement around the packed stadium there is a concern. Somewhere in amongst the wild enthusiasm they know that there might just a be a fragility to the team that could be crushed by bigger and better sides than the Hammers. Frank's clever kick-off routine
Thomas Frank's Tottenham have adopted many of the same principles we saw work for Brentford last season, and the novel use of dead-ball situations is one. Of particular note this weekend was the use of the kick-off as a set-piece routine. Against Burnley, the ball was passed back to Guglielmo Vicario from kick-off as the home team shuffled up the pitch. Burnley logically shuffled deeper, pre-empting a long ball. The deceptive nature of how Vicario shaped up sold this routine further before a shorter pass to Pedro Porro was played. By finding Porro towards the inner right side of the pitch, closer to goal, the angle he could play the cross at was more likely to result in a dangerous chance. Porro is one of Spurs' strongest crossers, and with Spurs getting an extra body at the back post, on another occasion, this may have resulted in an early goal. By manufacturing a situation in which the ball is launched long early has the added benefit of getting the ball away from your own goal, so pressure from the opposition can't be applied. Frank's sides aim to maximise fine-margin gains across the pitch, and the focus on a smart, well-worked kick-off routine is another tool in their expansive skillset. Across this season, they will certainly continue to experiment with their kick-off routines.
