Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office: Aamir Khan starrer tops 250cr worldwide but misfires overseas

Sitaare Zameen Par has nearly wrapped up its international box office run, grossing just over USD 200K in its fourth weekend. The total overseas collection of the film now stands at USD 7.80 million (Rs. 67 crore). The Aamir Khan starrer managed a run in India, but overseas it has been subpar. The worldwide gross for the film stands at Rs. 254 crore, largely driven by its domestic haul.
SZP falls short of Laal Singh Chaddha Overseas
To put things in perspective, the overseas biz of Sitaare Zameen Par is still short of Laal Singh Chaddha, which was a DISASTER. By the end of its run, it will probably get even with it but that is despite the Middle East business being more than double that of LSC, which implies the rest of the markets have fared significantly worse.
The film had a soft start but showed promise with a big growth on Saturday. At that point, it looked like it might cruise past USD 10 million, possibly even stretching to USD 15 million with strong legs. However, it came back of earth soon after on Sunday and the trend since then has been rather ordinary.
The film has underperformed across the board, but the United States is the biggest letdown. Traditionally, the strongest market for Aamir and generally friendly to films of this genre, the US turnout was tepid, set to close under USD 2 million. The best performer is ironically the Middle East, ironic because generally films like this underperform here. So, just a weird set of performances.
Will China come to the rescue?
Sitaare Zameen Par is expected to release in the East Asian markets later this year, including China. Aamir Khan is the biggest name from Indian cinema in China, who has delivered two mega blockbusters in Dangal and Secret Superstar. How SZP performs in China could change the entire narrative of the film; however, that market is struggling lately, so it's unclear how that will go at this moment.
The territorial breakdown for Sitaare Zameen Par overseas box office is as follows:

Karan Johar says Nadaaniyan was watched for the ‘wrong reasons', it was ‘dissed and b**ched': ‘Move on to next bad film, leave us alone'

Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor's OTT film Nadaaniyan received a lot of harsh criticism after its release. The film was brutally trolled on social media and became a part of memes. Directed by Shauna Gautam, it was produced by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment. In a recent interview, the filmmaker reacted to the widespread negativity around Nadaaniyan and urged people to move on. During a podcast with Suchin Mehrotra, Karan stated that the views of a project don't matter, if it's being watched for the 'wrong reasons'. 'As a creative artist, as a collaborator, no film that receives criticism ever makes me happy. How can it? Even if a gazillion people watched it and it wasn't liked, it was watched for the wrong reasons,' he said. The filmmaker added, 'You cannot! I am sorry, I will be very stupid to be deluded about the fact that it didn't get the love, did not get liked, it was dissed, it was b**ched, and maybe a bit more than it should have. I am like, 'Yaar, let it go' after a point. It's a film you didn't like, move on, can you?' ALSO READ | War 2 movie review LIVE Updates: Early reviews call climax of Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR film 'mind-boggling'; earns Rs 5.1 cr till 8 am Complaining about how content creators took advantage of the situation and made several videos while trolling Nadaaniyan, Karan shared, 'There were YouTube creators and content creators who were making four videos on it, you made one, right? You know you're getting the hits again and again, because bashing Nadaaniyan was like the fashion of that moment. It was really making people kind of go and watch your YouTube video and they were enjoying it. It was celebrated negatively and that does happen sometimes.' He continued, 'That put aside, I have no way to tell you that it got massive numbers so I am happy about it. No, I can't be happy about it. It didn't get the love. We have to accept it, acknowledge it, move on from it, and do better next time. That's all. How can I say that this show or movie is amazing because so many million people watched it? But if it didn't get the love, you are going to feel it in your heart.' Karan Johar revealed that his team has taken notes and would work on it. However, the audience should also move on from Nadaaniyan. 'All of us are very self aware, it's a part of my personality type. Will I go and apologise for it? No, I will probably speak with the team, take stock of it, and do that. We have dealt with it internally and that's all we really want to speak about it. But now, can you move on to the next bad show or film? Leave us alone. We have moved on and so should you,' he concluded. Besides Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, Nadaaniyan also starred Suniel Shetty, Mahima Chaudhary, Jugal Hansraj, Dia Mirza, and Archana Puran Singh.

‘If you put Shah Rukh Khan in Saiyaara, it will flop; Ahaan Panday doesn't have the personality to carry Jawan': Varun Badola

Actor Varun Badola, who appeared in the recent blockbuster Saiyaara, spoke about the film's two leads, the newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. He dismissed the suggestion that the era of stars is over, as many have been saying after the success of Saiyaara. Directed by Mohit Suri, the romantic drama has grossed over Rs 500 crore at the worldwide box office, ranking among the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time. It has also been compared to Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Maine Pyaar Kiya, and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, all of which launched their respective stars – Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Hrithik Roshan. In an interview with Nayandeep Rakshit on YouTube, Varun said, 'People are saying that this film has proven that we don't need stars anymore. That's not true. Abhi tum Ahaan Panday ko utha ke Jawan mein daalo, Jawan flop ho jayegi. Shah Rukh ko Saiyaara mein daal do, Saiyaara flop ho jayegi (Try putting Ahaan Panday in Jawan, Jawan will flop. Put Shah Rukh in Saiyaara, and Saiyaara will flop). Shah Rukh will suddenly become too big for the film, and Ahaan will not have the personality to run Jawan.' Produced by Aditya Chopra, Saiyaara was offered to Ahaan as a launchpad after a separate project he was attached to fell through. Varun said that the young actor has a solid screen presence, and that he was impressed with Aneet's grasp over Hindi. He also admitted that the father-son storyline in the film was very 'Bhatt camp', but that's understandable because Mohit Suri started out under Mahesh Bhatt. This isn't the first time that Varun has expressed apathy towards the film's success. In an interview with SCREEN, the actor called out the publicity team, and suggested that videos of overzealous fans might not be authentic. 'I saw the euphoria on Instagram. Log jo chudiyaan tod rahe hai, chaatiyaan peet rahe hai (People were breaking their bangles, beating themselves). I think the promotions team went a little overboard there, where people are going to see the film, putting IV drips. Those people must have been told to give content in some way; thank god, people didn't get their legs broken and went crawling to see the film,' he said.
