'Final Opportunity To Make Our Country Proud': Gautam Gambhir Rallies Team India Ahead Of Oval Test
India head coach Gautam Gambhir says their ongoing tour of England has been quite challenging as has been the case in the past and noted the support the team has enjoyed.
India secured a hard-fought draw in Manchester to ensure England won't take an unassailable lead in the five-match series and give themselves one final chance to end on level terms with the fifth Test starting from Thursday in London.
England currently lead the series 2-1 courtesy their victories in Leeds and Lord's.
'Touring this part of the world has always been exciting and challenging because of the history between the two countries, which can never be forgotten," Gambhir said. 'We have cherished every bit of support we have received every time we have toured the UK."
Gambhir was speaking during a gathering at the India House in London on Monday evening with the team receiving a rousing welcome from community leaders, parliamentarians and sports fans at a diaspora reception hosted by the High Commission of India.
Gambhir is happy with the manner in which the series has turned out so far.
'The last five weeks have been really exciting for both countries," Gambhir said. 'I am sure that the kind of cricket that was put on display has made every cricket lover proud. Both teams threw a lot of punches and fought for every inch."
'We have one more week to go. One final push to make. One final opportunity to make our country proud. Jai Hind," he concluded.
Vikram Doraiswami, India's High Commissioner to the UK, said the fighting spirit the team showed during the series was a just reflection of the country's will to fight the odds.
'It's been a great series, played in the best of spirit. But the best bit of it all is the fact that we have a chance to see Test cricket played the way it is intended to be – contests for full five days, contests that have gone to the wire, contests in which the great sense of cricket as a game that is played with intensity for five days.
'And to have our team here display what is truly the range of skills but also the fighting spirit that is now associated with Team India is also a great reflection of the fighting spirit that now stands for the new India that we are all privileged to represent here," said Doraiswami.

Shubman Gill Needs 68 Runs At Oval To Beat Don Bradman, Become First Ever To...
Last Updated: Shubman Gill is nearing 3 historic records held by Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar. When Shubman Gill was appointed India's Test captain before the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy in England, a big chunk of doubts over him were regarding his ability to separate his captaincy responsibilities from his batting. As India's new number four and an heir to the big shoes left vacant by Virat Kohli, his runs off the willow were always going to be equally important — if not more — to his tactics on the field. With 743 runs in four Tests plus an innings at the Oval in the fifth, he has silenced many critics. It has been a wonderful series from him where every time he has stepped onto the pitch, a record or two have been broken. He scored 21 out of 34 in the first innings in the final Test, getting run out after looking well-set and technically brilliant to deal with the tough batting conditions in London. Even in the short span, he managed to break Sunil Gavaskar's record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India as captain. If and when he comes to bat in the second innings, Gill will eye three more records. Two are from the legendary Don Bradman and one from Gavaskar — all three at one point seemed that they could never be broken, but the right-hander is close and perhaps the closest one for India in a while. Firstly, if Gill manages to score 68 runs in the second innings, it'll make him the highest run-scorer in a Test series, ever, for a captain. The chart is currently led by Bradman with 810 runs, and Gill is third. Then, if Gill can score 28 more runs in the second innings, he'll still create history by going past Gavaskar's 774 to own the record for most runs in a Test series for India. It'll be the first time in 54 years that the record will be surpassed. Finally, this one is quite unlikely, but if, due to some dramatic turn in circumstances, Gill can manage to smash 233 runs in the second innings, he'll beat the all-time record for most runs in a Test series. It's currently held by Bradman with 974 in the 1930 Ashes in England and Gill is 21st in the list. NZ's Daryl Mitchell's Strategy For Zimbabwe Test: 'Get A Lead On...'
Last Updated: Daryl Mitchell's 80 runs helped New Zealand secure a 158-run lead against Zimbabwe, who ended the day at 31 for two, trailing by 127 runs. New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell emphasised the importance of gaining a substantial lead after guiding the Black Caps to a strong position on the second day of the first Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club on Thursday. Mitchell scored 80 runs as New Zealand secured a first-innings lead of 158 runs before the visitors captured two late wickets. Zimbabwe ended the day at 31 for two, trailing by 127 runs to avoid making New Zealand bat again. 'It's nice to get a lead on a challenging surface which is going up and down a bit. A couple of wickets tonight tops it off," said Mitchell. Mitchell noted that the Queens Club pitch had surprised the New Zealanders with its tennis ball-type bounce. He praised Zimbabwe's fast bowlers, Blessing Muzarabani and Tanaka Chivanga, who 'bowled really well." Muzarabani and Chivanga took three and two wickets respectively as New Zealand slipped from their overnight score of 92 for no wicket to 233 for seven in response to Zimbabwe's first innings total of 149. 'We were just trying to take it ball by ball and over by over," said Mitchell. 'We recognised that runs on that surface are going to be pretty valuable at the back end of the game. I thought the way he (Smith) gutsed it out was awesome. The injury was niggly but the way he hung in there and stuck it out for a few overs, he should be very proud." Smith did not field when Zimbabwe commenced their second innings, suggesting that his injury might prevent him from bowling on Friday. Mitchell was the last man out after facing 119 balls and hitting five fours and a six. Faced with just under an hour to bat until the close, Zimbabwe made a promising start with Brian Bennett and Ben Curran putting on 25 for the first wicket. However, Matt Henry, who took six for 39 in the first innings, made the breakthrough with a bouncer to Curran (11), which the left-hander top-edged to fine leg. Five balls later, Will O'Rourke had Bennett caught behind for 18, leaving Zimbabwe with a considerable challenge if they are to take the match into a fourth day, let alone avoid their seventh defeat in nine Test matches since last December.
