‘Rabid' fox bites hiker six times in rare fox attack
'I got off work, thought maybe I want to go on a hike,' she said.
Fox reportedly attacks at least four in San Marcos, prompting rabies concerns
She walked toward a field of blooming Prairie coneflowers when she heard rustling behind her.
'It was a fox,' Danos said. 'It just started walking towards me.'
While it wasn't foaming at the mouth or charging at her, Danos said she knew something was off as it began approaching her. Foxes generally are elusive and keep to themselves.
'It got behind me and ended up biting my ankle,' she said.
Danos tried running away, hitting it with rocks, and physically throwing the fox, but it kept returning to attack her. She finally escaped after throwing the fox into a cactus. She got bitten six times and lost her cellphone in the attack.
'I've had a lot of [rabies] shots,' she said. 'I have to get more tomorrow, and then seven days, and then 14 days. So it's a process.'
The fox, which officials are pretty sure was rabid, bit several people on Sunday. Natasia Moore, an urban biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said fox attacks in Texas are exceedingly rare.
'It's not typical behavior,' Moore said. 'This [is] the first case of a fox attack in Texas that I know of to date.'
Moore went with crews on Monday to the Purgatory Creek Natural Area to investigate the incident. Officials were interested in finding out if there was denning activity in the area, which could have been a cause of the aggression.
'In urban areas, if an animal is showing aggression, it can be because they are protecting a den site,' Moore said. 'We did not see any fox activity.'
'Unfortunately, [a rabies infection] is looking like the most likely scenario,' Moore continued.
As of Tuesday evening, the fox has still not been located.

Two dead and suspect in custody after ‘active shooter' at Target store in Texas
Two people are dead after a shooting at an Austin, Texas, Target store, police said, citing preliminary information. A suspect is in custody, police added. 'The scene is still active, and the investigation is ongoing at this time,' the Austin Police Department wrote on X on Monday afternoon. Two people were injured in the shooting as well, KXAN reports. The shooting occurred just before 3pm at the Target at 8601 Research Boulevard, according to police. RCMP in P.E.I. say victim shot dead in car was 35-year-old man; no arrests made yet
A targeted shooting into a car on a dirt section of road in western P.E.I. Friday night killed a 35-year-old man and involved a perpetrator who fled the scene and has not yet been arrested, RCMP said at a briefing Monday afternoon. Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, told reporters that police believe another vehicle was present on the Hackmatack Road when shots were reported at around 8 p.m. AT on Friday, in the Urbainville area near Wellington. Moore did not identify the victim of the shooting, which forced a 2008 Toyota Corolla to roll over and strike a utility pole. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, a 50-year-old Summerside woman, was taken to Prince County Hospital with serious injuries. Moore did not give an update on her condition, saying the families of both people in the Corolla had requested privacy. He did say that both parties in the car sustained injuries as a result of the crash, and the man had gunshot wounds. He also said a burned vehicle found at St. Lawrence, near Miminegash, which was reported to police at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, may be linked to the case. Since news of the shooting emerged Saturday morning, hundreds of people have been sharing rumours on social media about what happened. Many asked why police had not confirmed whether they were seeking a specific suspect or alerting people living near where a suspected suspect could be hiding out. "The perpetrator had fled the area and there was very little information to share," Moore said Monday as he explained why the circumstances did not qualify for an emergency alert. The RCMP Major Crime Unit is the lead investigating body, with forensic, canine and traffic support as well as help from Summerside and Kensington's police agencies and the P.E.I. Coroners Office.
