Jasprit Bumrah's role in Cameron Green's recovery from career-threatening injury: 'He was in the middle of a Test match'

Cameron Green is back. After having undergone back surgery last year, Green is now fully fit and fine and raring to go in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. The Australia all-rounder lends a great deal of balance to the side, and his inclusion will give the defending champions a major shot in the arm.
Ahead of the WTC final at the Lord's Cricket Ground, Green revealed how he received a message from India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, just the night before he was supposed to go for the back surgery.
Bumrah reached out to Green midway through India's three-match Test series against New Zealand. It must be mentioned that the India speedster underwent the same procedure 18 months earlier. The Australia all-rounder stated how a message from Bumrah acted as the ultimate reassurance.
The India pacer has had his fair share of back injuries. Earlier this year, he had suffered a back spasm during the Sydney Test against Australia, which kept him out of competitive cricket for close to three months. Due to this injury, Bumrah also missed the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025.
Green played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023 season. However, he was unable to share the dressing room with Jasprit Bumrah as the pacer was injured and missed the entire season.
'That is really special. And makes you feel a lot better about it. I didn't play with him in Mumbai, but that was the connection through there. Spent a bit of time with him there,' Green told Cricbuzz.
"To get someone like him to reach out and then to watch him during the summer, to see how good he is obviously post-surgery, filled me with a lot of confidence," added the 26-year-old.

Speaking about Green, the all-rounder was traded ahead of the IPL 2024 season, and he then represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). However, he missed the latest edition of the tournament after undergoing surgery.
Australia had won the second edition of the WTC after beating India in the final at the Oval, London. Pat Cummins will now look to defend their crown when they take the field against South Africa at the Lord's Cricket Ground.
The match will be played from June 11-15 with June 16 acting as a reserve day. This is the first time that South Africa have qualified for the WTC final.
Cameron Green has been out of action for more than six months. He had also missed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, which Australia won 3-1.
"The times when you see the guys celebrating in the dressing room or just having a really good day, knowing the type of feeling you'll have is what makes you want to be there. But at the same time, there were moments when I definitely went 'Jasprit looks pretty good'," said Green.
India might have lost the series but Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the standout performer, claiming 32 wickets in the five-match series.

BCCI expected Rohit Sharma to retire from ODIs after Champions Trophy; Ajit Agarkar to act as captaincy saga intensifies

Indian cricket is going through an interesting time. The legends are on their way out, and the next generation is taking over. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the two stalwarts and torch-bearers of Indian cricket, who held the batting over the last decade and a half, announced their retirements from T20Is last year and now have decided to walk away from Tests. Only ODIs remain – the format whose future has been widely debated. With still a good chunk of ODIs left between now and the 2027 World Cup, there is a chance that both Kohli and Rohit are eyeing to finish off their storied careers with the only ICC limited-overs trophy they haven't won together. Here is the catch, though. The World Cup is still more than two years away, and by then, Rohit would be 40 while Kohli would be touching that figure. While there is no doubt that both would be eager to carry on, the team management may view at mission World Cup differently. For Kohli, the scheme of things looks a lot better as he is a lot fitter in comparison and has his batting approach sorted. With Rohit, it's been a bit of a hit and miss lately. Two years ago, Rohit adopted this carefree batting approach during the 2023 World Cup, which, to a large extent, is continuing to work for him. However, with age catching up, how much longer this approach will bring him success will be a crucial factor. Besides, with reports doing the rounds that Rohit will no longer be captain during the ICC tournament in South Africa, the job becomes that much tougher for Rohit. Usually, how Indian cricket works is that it grooms a successor. For example, MS Dhoni knew that it would be tough for him to work past the 2019 World Cup, and hence Virat Kohli was appointed India's ODI captain in 2017. Similarly, with the 2027 World Cup likely being Rohit's swansong, the chances of him captaining are grim. For the first time, Indian cricket is working on the theory of split captaincy. While Rohit is captaining India in the ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav is in command of the ODI team, and the newly appointed captain, Shubman Gill, will begin his journey in another 11 days' time. But it may not be the case for too long. A chance in guard is loading, and it could be coming shortly. "Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," a BCCI source told The Hindustan Times. As part of the evolving cycle, the BCCI chairman of selectors is expected to spring into action to shape Rohit's successor. Despite his questionable tactics as Test captain, Rohit has been tremendous when it comes to leading India in white-ball formats. In the last three ICC events, India have lost just one match under Rohit – the World Cup final to Australia. In the last two years, Rohit has led India to two ICC championships – the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. If the Bangladesh tour goes as planned, then India will play their next ODI series in August; otherwise, in October, when they travel to Australia to play a three-match series. August 2025: 3 matches in Bangladesh October 2025: 3 matches in Australia November 2025: 3 matches against South Africa at home January 2026: 3 matches against New Zealand at home June 2026: 3 matches against Afghanistan at home July 2026: 3 matches in England September 2026: 3 matches against West Indies at home November 2026: 3 matches in New Zealand December 2026: 3 matches against Sri Lanka at home. Between now and the World Cup, India play at least 27 ODIs – updated as per the current FTP – but more matches can be added, and changes can be made. With so many matches being spread across two years, and with the possibility that Shreyas Iyer has joined India's race for captaincy, and Gill already in contention, Rohit's run as captain could be coming to an end.

Vaughan Says Gill As Test Captain Is 'Bold Call' After Rohit, Kohli Retirements

Last Updated: Michael Vaughan feels Shubman Gill's appointment as India's Test captain is a bold call after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirements. Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that appointing 25-year-old Shubman Gill as India's Test captain for the upcoming five-Test series against England is a 'bold move" following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the red-ball format. Gill will lead India in their first assignment of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle in England, starting on 20 June in Leeds. The right-handed opening batter will have wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as his deputy. With the recent Test retirements of Rohit and Kohli, India's batting line-up will be primarily led by Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Pant. Vaughan noted that Gill faces a challenge to prove himself on foreign soil but mentioned he possesses the temperament for crucial moments. 'Shubman Gill is officially the new face of Indian Test cricket, stepping up as captain for the England series. It's a bold move, trusting a young leader with a new-look team after the retirements of giants like Rohit and Kohli. Gill has a lot to prove, especially away from home, but he has shown he has the temperament for big moments," said Vaughan, who is part of Sony Sports Network's expert commentary team for the series. The veteran England batter added that the England tour could mark the beginning of a special era for India's next generation. 'With Rishabh Pant as his deputy and a squad eager to make their mark, this England tour could be the start of something special for India's next generation. Don't be surprised if these youngsters rise to the occasion," Vaughan added. Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar echoed Vaughan's sentiments, saying the world is eager to witness how the young Indian team performs in the series. 'There's always something special about an Indian team touring England, and this time, with a new young captain and terrific young players, the excitement and anticipation among fans are at an all-time high. Everyone is eager to see how these young cricketers will rise to the occasion and carve out their legacy," said Gavaskar, who will join Vaughan in the commentary box for the tour. The upcoming India tour of England marks a significant new chapter for Team India, as a fresh squad prepares to tackle one of cricket's most challenging assignments in English conditions. Historically, India's success in Test series on English soil has been rare, with the team having won a Test series in England only three times in the past 100 years. These landmark victories came in 1971, 1986, and 2007, each time under the leadership of a new or first-time captain – Ajit Wadekar in 1971, Kapil Dev in 1986, and Rahul Dravid in 2007 – highlighting the pivotal role of new leadership in these historic triumphs. Rishabh Pant Injured Ahead Of England Tests? Vice-Captain Gets Hit During Nets

Last Updated: Indian vice-captain Rishabh Pant had a minor injury scare during a net session before the five-Test series against England. Indian vice-captain Rishabh Pant suffered a minor injury scare during a net session ahead of the five-Test series against England. According to a RevSportz report, the left-hander was hit on his dominant hand while batting after a long hit, prompting a quick check and an ice pack from the team doctor. Although his net session reportedly ended there, he didn't seem to be significantly injured, with no concerns afterwards. India would hope that Pant remains fit ahead of the crucial five-Test series. He's one of the most important players in the format for the country and that shows in his promotion to the role of deputy captain, with the BCCI selectors probably seeing him as a big voice in the Shubman Gill-led leadership group. His batting would be crucial, too. In a mostly inexperienced, young side, he comes with a ton of good numbers to show in England. He has played nine Tests here (the most after India and Australia), scoring 556 runs at an average of 32.71, with two centuries and two half-centuries. His agression in the middle-order and ability to rejuvenate things after top-order collapses give India a much-needed spine. Moreover, against an English team that likes to play in the front-footed BazBall mode, he'll give India a foil, especially against spinners and medium-pace bowling all-rounders. If in the unlikely scenario Pant has to miss any matches, India have a reliable option ready in Dhruv Jurel, who has hit three consecutive fifties against England Lions for India 'A' in the ongoing unofficial Tests. Jurel has played four Tests for India — against the English at home — scoring 202 runs at 40.40. The five-Test series will commence on June 20th in Leeds. It'll mark the start of the new World Test Championship cycle. It'll also kick off Gill's era as the fifth youngest captain in Indian Test history, with him going head-to-head against Ben Stokes, one of the greatest in English history. First Published:
