The BBC is facing calls to remove a member of the Wimbledon commentary team following a barrage of complaints on social media.
Andrew Castle, a stalwart of the broadcaster's Wimbledon coverage, was in the commentary box for the men's singles final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.

At 61, Castle, who once held the title of Britain's No. 1, made it to the second round at Wimbledon in both 1986 and 1987 and reached the Australian Open mixed doubles final in 1987.

However, he has since become more recognised as a commentator, regularly featuring in the BBC's Wimbledon broadcasts.

The pre-match analysis for the Sinner vs Alcaraz game on BBC One featured insights from tennis experts Tim Henman, Todd Woodbridge, John McEnroe, and Pat Cash, with Clare Balding hosting. Yet, when it was time to switch to the commentary, Andrew Castle took the lead, causing his name to trend online.

"Why oh why do the BBC put Andrew Castle on lead commentary for the Men's Singles final every year, he's terrible. My ears have already start to bleed," lamented one viewer.
Another said: "Massive build up to this #WimbledonFinal and then BBC put Andrew Castle on commentary. Way to kill the match for me before it even starts," reports the Mirror.
"Wow Andrew Castle is so bad he is already trending internationally," noted a fan. "Heart sinks when I hear the words '... and your commentator is Andrew Castle'. Ruins enjoyment of every match. @BBCSport needs to cut the chord," implored another, calling for change.

Another critical comment surfaced online, stating: "Andrew Castle being given such an important role in this final after all of the complaints about him in the semi is embarrassing. He really adds zilch to the commentary booth."

Castle's presence at Wimbledon has been a talking point previously, particularly following the entry of Andre Agassi into the BBC commentary team during the semi-final clash between Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. Agassi's arrival prompted a flood of positive reactions from viewers who preferred his insights over Castle's.

Nick Kyrgios, known for not holding back his opinions, seemingly shares this view. In 2024, he took issue with Castle's on-air remarks about power-players Fritz and Alexander Zverev, branding them as disrespectful.
The BBC has assembled a stellar lineup of pundits for this year's tournament, including tennis greats like McEnroe, Henman, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Cash, Tracy Austin, and Annabel Croft, with Castle joining other commentators such as Andrew Cotter, Jo Durie, Anne Keothavong, Nick Mullins, and Todd Woodbridge.
Furthermore, the team of experts offering insights on BBC Radio 5 Live has included Marion Bartoli, Kim Clijsters, Laura Robson, Greg Rusedski, Naomi Broady, Daniela Hantuchova, and Leon Smith.

Wayne Rooney clocks in for first Match of the Day shift after Man United and England legend landed '£800,000' BBC deal to become regular on the show

Wayne Rooney was pictured arriving for his debut appearance on Match of the Day at BBC 's studios on Sunday. Rooney turned up at 10:30am to formally kick off his new role as a regular pundit for the broadcaster. The former Manchester United and England captain is believed to have signed a lucrative deal worth around £800,000 a year to join the iconic football highlights programme. Arriving at the dock10 studios in MediaCityUK, Salford, Rooney looked confident as he walked past photographers and into the Match of the Day production hub. Rooney's transition from management to broadcasting comes after spells at Plymouth Argyle, Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City. The 39-year-old has been out of a job since leaving Argyle by mutual consent on New Year's Eve after a challenging seven-month spell in charge. Rooney has made no secret of his enjoyment of punditry since stepping back from coaching, occasionally appearing on Amazon Prime Video for Champions League coverage last season. Speaking to talkSPORT in June, he appeared to hint that his immediate future would involve more media work than management. He told the radio station: 'Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that's what I'm doing. I'm enjoying it. So, that's where I'll be.' Rooney's switch also comes as Match of the Day move into a new era following Gary Lineker's controversial departure. Lineker confirmed his departure from the BBC in May and 'apologised unreservedly' after being accused of anti-semitism by sharing a someone else's social media post. The England legend left the BBC without a pay-off from his £1.4million salary while he, Shearer and Micah Richards have continued to work together on the hugely popular 'The Rest is Football' podcast. Lineker presented Match of the Day since 1999, with his 26-year reign making him the longest presenter in the show's history.

Who are the Match of the Day presenters and pundits for the 2025/26 season?

AS the Premier League kicks off again, it's time to get to know a new roster of presenters helming the Saturday evening highlights on Match of the Day. This will be the first series of the show without Gary Lineker, who made his final appearance as Match of the Day host back in May. Who is replacing Gary Lineker on Match of the Day? The BBC announced in January that the new Match of the Day hosts would be Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan. 2 BBC Sports mainstay Logan is a household name from her work presenting Sports Personality of the Year, as well as regularly standing in for Gary Lineker on Match of the Day. Cates is best known for her coverage of the Premier League for Sky Sports, while Chapman will be familiar to viewers for his long-running position as a rugby league presenter at the BBC. The three stars will share the presenting duties across the weekends, with Match of the Day 2 now rebranded to just Match of the Day. Chapman is hosting the opening MOTD of the season on Saturday night, with Logan on the Sunday night. Who are the Match of the Day pundits? Wayne Rooney has joined the MOTD set up for punditry duties. The ex-England captain, 39, netted a huge two-year deal and will be officially unveiled this month. Rooney is also signed up as a panellist for the BBC's 2026 World Cup coverage from the US, Mexico and Canada. The Premier League's record goalscorer Alan Shearer joins Rooney on his official debut show. While Joe Hart and Danny Murphy will be the pundits alongside Logan on Sunday's show. Why did Gary Lineker leave Match of the Day? Gary Lineker announced he was stepping down from the BBC in November 2024, after over 25 years with the broadcaster. It was initially reported that Lineker would present the BBC's FA Cup and 2026 World Cup coverage as a 'farewell', but he was then sacked from the BBC entirely following an antisemitism row earlier this year. After facing criticism for posting a cartoon that represented supporters of Israel as rats, Lineker stated that "stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action." Will Lineker do any presenting on other shows? Gary Lineker is now set to front game show The Box on ITV. Originating in Norway, the format involves celebrities being trapped in boxes and having to complete daring challenges. Gary will also be continuing his work with his podcast company Goalhanger Productions, where he fronts The Rest Is Football with fellow Match of the Day hosts Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.

New Match of the Day host Mark Chapman finds love again after wife's death

New Match of the Day host Mark Chapman finds love again after wife's death The BBC presenter is in the Match of the Day hotseat as the iconic highlights show enters a new era Chapman will host the first Match of the Day of the new season It's the start of a new Premier League season, and the beginning of a new era for Match of the Day, with long-time host Gary Lineker no longer in the presenter's chair. ‌ The former England striker hosted the iconic highlights show for 26 years, but announced last year that he would be stepping away from the role at the end of the 2024/25 season. He had been scheduled to continue presenting the BBC's live FA Cup broadcasts, and front coverage of next year's FIFA World Cup, but he has now left the broadcaster for good after sparking outrage. ‌ Lineker came under fire after sharing a social media post on Zionism which featured a rat, which has historically been used as an anti-semitic insult in reference to language used by Nazi Germany towards Jewish people. While he removed the post and issued a public apology, it was later confirmed that he would leave the BBC early, signing off from the corporation on the final day of last season. ‌ When his departure was first announced, it was confirmed that a three-presenter team of Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates would take up hosting duties, and it is Chapman that is set to kick off proceedings on the first day of the 2025/26 campaign. The 51-year-old has become one of the most recognisable and well-liked faces in sports broadcasting over the years, having also fronted coverage of rugby league, the NFL and the Olympics alongside a host of football tournaments. But while Chapman is at the top of his game, his professional achievements have come against the backdrop of a brutally difficult period in his personal life, with the presenter tragically losing his wife Sara to cancer five years ago. Article continues below The couple got married in 2001 and went on to have three children together, with Sara fighting the disease for many years before sadly passing away in June 2020 at the age of just 44. At the time, a source told The Sun: 'Sadly Sara passed away on June 3. Mark and the kids are absolutely devastated. "The family was there and it's just a really sad situation. They're an extremely private family and would appreciate people respecting that.' ‌ Mark Chapman's wife Sara (pictured) died aged 44 (Image: Twitter) While he and his family were understandably left heartbroken by the loss, however, Chapman has now found love again, with it revealed last year that he had started a relationship with estate agent Clere Collier. Ms Collier, who is believed to be seven years younger than the presenter, has paid tribute to him on social media, describing him as her "one love". ‌ On Chapman's birthday last year, the estate agent - who is based in Dubai but reportedly makes regular trips over to the UK - shared a photo of the BBC star, writing: "Happy birthday to this one. My one love. "So proud of all you do, the biggest heart, the kindest soul, the leader of our pack and not to mention devilishly handsome. I love you, happy 51." The Sun reports that Chapman's new partner previously worked at an agency in Hampstead in north London and was known as a "socialite", with her celebrity friends including actors, singers and radio DJ Chris Moyles. Article continues below The publication adds that she previously been married twice before and has two children from those relationships, while she previously dated Another Level boyband star Dane Bowers.
