PM Modi To Inaugurate 103 Upgraded Railway Stations Today; 3 Major West Bengal Stations Get Modern Makeover
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today virtually inaugurate 103 redeveloped railway stations across India under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with three major stations from West Bengal—Kalyani Ghoshpara, Panagarh, and Joychandi Pahar—receiving comprehensive modern upgrades.
The historic inauguration ceremony will be conducted via video conference from Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking a significant milestone in India's railway infrastructure modernization. The nationwide project spans 86 districts across 18 states and Union Territories, representing a total investment of over Rs 1,100 crore.
"May 22 is a landmark day for India's railway infrastructure. The Amrit Stations will boost comfort, connectivity and celebrate our glorious culture!" PM Modi announced on social media platform X ahead of the inauguration.
The three West Bengal stations have undergone remarkable transformations with a combined investment of Rs 20.73 crore. Joychandi Pahar received the highest allocation at Rs 11.43 crore, followed by Panagarh at Rs 5.5 crore and Kalyani Ghoshpara at Rs 3.8 crore.
"Through this scheme, the stations have been completely revamped. The new features will give them a brand new look," explained Diptimoy Dutta, Chief Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway.
Kalyani Ghoshpara Station, which serves the University of Kalyani, AIMS, IIIT, ITI, and numerous medical and engineering colleges, has been transformed into a modern transportation hub. The comprehensive redevelopment encompasses the station building, concourse, circulating area, porch, and facade.
Key improvements include a full-cover platform shed, raised and resurfaced platforms for enhanced safety, and modern furniture with new seating arrangements. The station now showcases local art and culture through decorative elements throughout the premises.
The technological upgrades are particularly impressive, featuring single and double-face train indication boards, GPS-enabled platform clocks, advanced speaker systems, and an outdoor LED tower clock. The facility now includes completely renovated waiting halls and toilets, along with accessibility features such as two ramps, low-height booking counters, accessible toilets, and water booths for differently-abled passengers.
Panagarh Railway Station under the Asansol Division has been transformed into a contemporary passenger facility. The station now features a brand-new building on the second entry side, complete with modern ticket counters, spacious waiting areas, and specially equipped toilets for differently-abled passengers.
Accessibility has been significantly enhanced through the installation of two lifts and additional ramps. The platforms have been refurbished with new protective sheds, while the circulating area has been optimized for smooth passenger and vehicle movement.
The station's green initiative includes landscaped gardens, while modern amenities encompass energy-efficient lighting systems, advanced ticketing infrastructure, and improved sanitation facilities. Security has been strengthened with comprehensive CCTV camera installation, and passengers now benefit from multiline display boards, train information systems, and coach information boards providing real-time travel updates.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his rally in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur on Friday, asked a child to lower his hands after noticing him waving at him for a prolonged period. 'This child's hands are up in the air for a long time. Your shoulders will start aching later,' Modi said. In a video shared by ANI news agency, the child could be seen nodding to indicate that his hands were not hurting, even as PM Modi advised him to rest them. Earlier in the day, PM Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 15 major development projects in Kanpur, amounting to over ₹47,600 crore. Among the key inaugurations was the new underground section of the Kanpur Metro Rail project, extending from Chunniganj to Kanpur Central. This newly launched segment comprises five underground stations — Chunniganj, Bada Chauraha, Naveen Market, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central. With the extension, major landmarks including Lal Imli, Z Square Mall, Green Park Stadium, Parade Ground, Book Market, and Somdutt Plaza will now have direct metro access. So far, nine metro stations between IIT Kanpur and Motijheel are operational. The new segment is expected to enhance metro connectivity, making city travel more efficient, faster, and safer, as per an official statement. In addition to the metro project, Modi also inaugurated three 660-megawatt power units at Ghatampur, along with a thermal power project in Panki. These initiatives are set to provide a reliable electricity supply to Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. Furthermore, two new railway bridges connecting the Panki power plant to Kalyanpur were also inaugurated as part of the development drive. PM Modi, during his speech in Kanpur, spoke about Operation Sindoor, India's military offensive against terror outfits in Pakistan, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed 22 lives. PM Modi said, 'Our armed forces' heroic act forced Pakistani Army to plead to stop war.' He further added, "World saw anger of our daughters and sisters in form of Operation Sindoor." Describing the depth of the strike, the Prime Minister said, "We destroyed terrorist hideouts in Pakistan by going hundreds of miles inside." Calling the operation a symbol of India's growing defence capability, he said, "Operation Sindoor not over yet; it showed world power of indigenous weapons, Make in India." He reiterated, "We destroyed terrorist hideouts in Pakistan by going hundreds of miles inside." Following India's offensive, Pakistan retaliated with cross-border attacks, including drone strikes, which were effectively neutralised by Indian forces. In the course of a four-day confrontation, India also struck and destroyed several military installations belonging to the Pakistan armed forces. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emerged victorious with 293 seats, and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A), its main opposition, was confined to 235 seats. Although the NDA got the majority votes, the results were a shock for many political analysts who not only predicted an easy win to the NDA but also forecasted almost 400 seats to the NDA, with the BJP gaining 300-350 seats. You considered the BJP's rise to power in 2014 a 'revolution' in your book based on '3Ds'—disconnection to the past, disruption in the present, and deconstruction of the future. Where does the 'revolution' stand now almost a year after the 2024 general elections? Yes, I indeed compared the BJP's rise to power to a revolution–and it offended many of my left-liberal friends. However, one must understand the ongoing deconstruction of India's socio-political and administrative systems. The country is chasing a utopia called the 'Hindu Rashtra,' backed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). And, like every big corporation has a vertical, the BJP is also a vertical of the RSS. Hence, at this moment, the revolution is continuing. However, I must say that the government has got a little feeble as it does not have the complete majority on its own, and the RSS is also apprehensive a bit because of the negative portrayal of Hindutva by the international media and the threat of being discredited like political Islam. After the 2024 elections, it was expected that the I.N.D.I.A alliance would become a formidable option. However, the back-to-back debacle in the state assembly polls and bypolls, followed by the internal power tussle, has made them weak. Why? The I.N.D.I.A alliance, unlike other alliances in the past, is different. It was formed by parties that were worried about the Modi government's ideological dominance and hence, came together. They were not very friendly with each other, but came together, keeping the parliamentary elections in mind. At present, the alliance exists only on paper. Nevertheless, the alliance has created an ideological paradigm against the BJP, partly because of Rahul Gandhi. As the leader of the opposition, he has understood where the core problem lies. It is not a fight against Narendra Modi, but a fight against Hindutva and the RSS. Without defeating the latter two, one can't defeat the first one. How do you read the political image of Rahul Gandhi from visiting temples in 2018 to talking about social justice in 2024? Is it a journey from soft Hindutva to social justice? See, it is not fashionable to talk about Rahul Gandhi's achievements. He is often considered playing the soft-Hindutva card if he visits temples. Gandhi's answer to the BJP blends three elements: secularism, constitutionalism, and social justice. Unlike previous times, his secularism does not disapprove of religion. Instead, it engages with it. He persistently calls out the BJP's effort to dismantle the constitutional values. The movement for social justice has changed India's political landscape since 1990. The OBCs and the Dalits play a significant role in states like Maharashtra and UP. In 2024, the results provided the BJP with a shock as the OBCs and Dalits largely voted for the I.N.D.I.A alliance. So, he identifies the right people and the right ingredients to put up a fight with the BJP. How do you see the implementation of the caste census by the BJP after all the comments they made against it? It can be considered an ideological retreat. The caste-based division is the biggest hindrance to the RSS's political strategy of uniting the Hindus. However, they cannot ignore the importance of caste-based reservation given the present political scenario. They had to take a middle path. The minorities played a significant role in the last general election. Where do they stand now in the light of developments like the WAQF Amendment Bill? The minorities, especially the Muslims, have suffered the most in the RSS-BJP regime. The 2024 election was a reflection of that suffering. As long as Hindutva remains a dominant ideology, their suffering will prevail.
