The Dance Of Democracy

A victory felt like a defeat, and a defeat felt like a victory' is a line which spread like wildfire on social media among netizens after the outcome of India's 18th general elections. It summed up the experience of voters and also the political stakeholders. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emerged victorious with 293 seats, and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A), its main opposition, was confined to 235 seats. Although the NDA got the majority votes, the results were a shock for many political analysts who not only predicted an easy win to the NDA but also forecasted almost 400 seats to the NDA, with the BJP gaining 300-350 seats.
Reclaiming Bharat: What Changed in 2024 and What Lies Ahead (Westland Books), by author and journalist Ashutosh, analyses what went wrong for the BJP and how the opposition parties turned the tables. Divided into 10 chapters, it covers Constitution debates, the politics of Mandalisation, and the temporary backlash against 'Hindutva' politics, among others. It also speaks about where the nation stands at this moment and where its key players stand. Excerpts from a conversation with the author.
You considered the BJP's rise to power in 2014 a 'revolution' in your book based on '3Ds'—disconnection to the past, disruption in the present, and deconstruction of the future. Where does the 'revolution' stand now almost a year after the 2024 general elections?
Yes, I indeed compared the BJP's rise to power to a revolution–and it offended many of my left-liberal friends. However, one must understand the ongoing deconstruction of India's socio-political and administrative systems. The country is chasing a utopia called the 'Hindu Rashtra,' backed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). And, like every big corporation has a vertical, the BJP is also a vertical of the RSS. Hence, at this moment, the revolution is continuing. However, I must say that the government has got a little feeble as it does not have the complete majority on its own, and the RSS is also apprehensive a bit because of the negative portrayal of Hindutva by the international media and the threat of being discredited like political Islam.
After the 2024 elections, it was expected that the I.N.D.I.A alliance would become a formidable option. However, the back-to-back debacle in the state assembly polls and bypolls, followed by the internal power tussle, has made them weak. Why?
The I.N.D.I.A alliance, unlike other alliances in the past, is different. It was formed by parties that were worried about the Modi government's ideological dominance and hence, came together. They were not very friendly with each other, but came together, keeping the parliamentary elections in mind. At present, the alliance exists only on paper. Nevertheless, the alliance has created an ideological paradigm against the BJP, partly because of Rahul Gandhi. As the leader of the opposition, he has understood where the core problem lies. It is not a fight against Narendra Modi, but a fight against Hindutva and the RSS. Without defeating the latter two, one can't defeat the first one.
How do you read the political image of Rahul Gandhi from visiting temples in 2018 to talking about social justice in 2024? Is it a journey from soft Hindutva to social justice?
See, it is not fashionable to talk about Rahul Gandhi's achievements. He is often considered playing the soft-Hindutva card if he visits temples. Gandhi's answer to the BJP blends three elements: secularism, constitutionalism, and social justice. Unlike previous times, his secularism does not disapprove of religion. Instead, it engages with it. He persistently calls out the BJP's effort to dismantle the constitutional values. The movement for social justice has changed India's political landscape since 1990. The OBCs and the Dalits play a significant role in states like Maharashtra and UP. In 2024, the results provided the BJP with a shock as the OBCs and Dalits largely voted for the I.N.D.I.A alliance. So, he identifies the right people and the right ingredients to put up a fight with the BJP.
How do you see the implementation of the caste census by the BJP after all the comments they made against it?
It can be considered an ideological retreat. The caste-based division is the biggest hindrance to the RSS's political strategy of uniting the Hindus. However, they cannot ignore the importance of caste-based reservation given the present political scenario. They had to take a middle path.
The minorities played a significant role in the last general election. Where do they stand now in the light of developments like the WAQF Amendment Bill?
The minorities, especially the Muslims, have suffered the most in the RSS-BJP regime. The 2024 election was a reflection of that suffering. As long as Hindutva remains a dominant ideology, their suffering will prevail.

India does not send dossiers any more, we only give a befitting reply, says Nadda

Bharatiya Janata Party national president J.P. Nadda on Saturday (May 31, 2025) said a safe and strong India is marching ahead under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership after the display of the nation's power during Operation Sindoor. 'The operation has only been halted, while the fight against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism will continue,' Mr. Nadda said. Mr. Nadda was on a day's visit to Jaipur to participate in the celebrations marking the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, the former queen of the Malwa kingdom, attend the BJP's 'Tiranga Yatra', and interact with the party workers. He spoke at two functions at the Rajasthan International Centre (RIC) and the Entertainment Paradise Hall, besides addressing the BJP workers at the Sanganer airport. Mr. Nadda said India had made it clear through its surgical strikes [in Pakistan], air strikes and Operation Sindoor that a 'befitting reply' would be given to the attackers by entering their own territory. 'India does not send dossiers [to Pakistan] any more, like the one after the 26/11 attack. Modi ji doesn't complain, he executes what he says,' he said. The new normal The BJP president said the Operation Sindoor, which had demonstrated India's military capability, had handed down a punishment to Pakistan 'beyond its imagination', as promised by Mr. Modi. 'Nine terror hotspots, including the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed, were destroyed in 22 minutes. Eleven air bases [in Pakistan] were also destroyed. This is the new normal,' he said. While affirming that Operation Sindoor would continue as long as Pakistan nurtures terrorism, Mr. Nadda called upon the BJP workers to apprise the people of the party's national security policy, and come forward to defend the nation. Disburses aid At the women's empowerment programme at RIC, Mr. Nadda flagged off 150 Kalika patrolling units of the Rajasthan Police and transferred financial assistance to the beneficiaries of Lakhpati Didi Yojana, Lado Protsahan Yojana, SC/ST pre-matric scholarship scheme, and the distance education scheme. He also launched the Swasth Nari Chetana Abhiyan and the Garbh Pathshala Yojana on the occasion. Mr. Nadda, who holds the Health & Family Welfare portfolio as a Minister in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre, said the culture of politics had changed in the country after 2014. 'Instead of blame game, every section of society is being empowered now,' he said. 'Modiji has made accountability and responsibility the new definitions of politics. We are willing to give report cards for our work… The double-engine government in Rajasthan is engaged in public service with its new schemes for all sections of society,' Mr. Nadda said. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Bhagirath Choudhary, former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and BJP State president Madan Rathore were among those who attended functions along with Mr. Nadda. Mr. Nadda also visited the Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Haribhau Bagade.

Cong member blames police at DGR's press conference

Mangaluru: The Muslim community's anger towards the Congress govt became evident following a Congress leader's emotional outburst regarding Abdul Rahiman's brutal killing during district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao's press conference here on Saturday. Congress leader Usman Kallapu, a former chairman of the standing committee in Ullal City Municipal Council, intervened when the minister was briefing media persons about the law and order situation in the district. Usman blamed that the hate speeches made by Hindutva leaders were the immediate reason for the murder of Abdul Rahiman. However, this made Rao angry, and he took Usman to task for interfering at a press briefing. Rao asked Usman not to speak during the press briefing, and when the latter continued to blame the police failure, the minister asked party leaders to send him out of the conference hall of the Circuit House. Later, Usman Kallapu told reporters that the police should arrest those who made provocative speeches during the 'Bajpe Chalo' rally, which was organised to demand justice for Suhas Shetty. "Immediate arrests should be made for individuals inciting violence against others. I advocate for the protection of innocent lives and seek only justice. Being a Congress functionary myself, I urge the Congress govt to take action against those who provoke perpetrators of violence," he said. In fact, none of the Congress leaders from the Muslim community, who announced their resignations, attended the grievance meeting with the district minister. Shahul Hameed KK, president of the minority wing of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress, and several other Congress office bearers had announced their resignation over law and order failure in Dakshina Kannada at a meeting of Muslim functionaries held in the city on Thursday. Former opposition leader of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council, Abdul Ravoof, who also announced his resignation, said that there is no need for a meeting with the district minister. "Our demand is very clear that stringent action should be taken against all individuals who deliver provocative speeches and ensure peace," he said.
