Cadillac unveils 'Elevated Velocity' electric crossover concept car

CNBCa day ago
General Motors on Thursday unveiled the Cadillac Elevated Velocity, a new concept car aimed at building up the brand's all-electric luxury crossover segment.
The electric concept car has a "lifted yet elegant design," according to Cadillac, riding on 24-inch wheels. It includes multiple driving modes to enhance the electric vehicle's performance, the company said.
"The word 'elevate' serves a dual meaning – it is a reference to the lifted chassis that enables high-speed off-road capabilities, but it also refers to an elevated luxury experience," said Alexandra Dymowska, Cadillac senior brand designer, in a media release.
The vehicle, which is a running showcar but does not have full performance capabilities, builds on Cadillac's luxury EV portfolio, which already includes the Lyriq and the Optiq.
Automakers regularly use concept vehicles to gauge customer interest or show the future direction of a vehicle or brand, but they're not meant to be sold to consumers.
The car continues the design principles of Cadillac's "Opulent Velocity" concept car, which the company revealed in 2024, said Bryan Nesbitt, vice president of GM global design, in a media statement.
GM initially set a goal to exclusively offer EVs by 2035, but has since said that consumer demand, which has been slower than expected, will dictate its EV plans. Its luxury Cadillac brand set a separate goal to be all-electric by 2030, but more recently said it will offer a full lineup of EVs as well as gas-powered cars.
Cadillac has been going through a revival effort in recent years, considering that luxury cars offer higher profit margins and attract a more affluent consumer than traditional vehicles.
During a call with reporters last month, Cadillac Vice President John Roth said the brand saw its best first half in nearly 20 years. He touted that Cadillac was the bestselling luxury EV brand in the second quarter of 2025, No. 2 in calendar year-to-date terms and fifth for overall EV sales.
The concept car offers multiple user experience modes. When entering the car, "welcome mode" involves the gull-wing doors lifting skyward and parts of the interior lighting up.
When the driver engages "elevate mode," the car becomes autonomous and the interior transforms into a "recovery space," where the pedals and steering wheel retract, ambient lighting changes and a light above the steering column aids the driver in breathwork to help occupants get in the "headspace for performance," according to Cadillac.
The elevate mode also triggers interior cabin filtration, fragrance, red light therapy and climatization to account for changes in air temperature and quality.
"Velocity mode," meanwhile, features cool white lighting to "evoke a sense of exhilaration" and floor lighting dims to help the driver focus on the road.
The concept car also includes different drive modes for on-road and off-road performance and improved visibility when driving in dusty or sandy conditions.
Cadillac said its exterior color is inspired by glacier ice, contrasted against the car's red interior.
The cabin includes red leather on the seat cushions and the cabin and cargo floor, while a red fabric covers the seat uppers, armrests and instrument panel.

Ford Motor Company (F): 'People Want To See Earnings' Not Announcements, Says Jim Cramer

We recently published . Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is one of the stocks Jim Cramer recently discussed. Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F)'s shares have gained 18.6% year-to-date to significantly outpace the gains of its peer and rival, General Motors. The firm has benefited from investor attention due to its manufacturing base in the US, while General Motors has suffered due to its reliance on the Mexican supply chain. Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) recently announced that it would invest $2 billion in the US and launch new EVs. However, the shares are up by a measly 2.7% since then. Cramer commented on why Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F)'s shares didn't rise: 'People want to see earnings. That's the [inaudible] they want to see earnings, they want to see a decline in warranties and that would matter. Here are his previous thoughts about Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F): 'And yet Ford stock is going from 10 to 11 in a quarter. What that says to me is that what we're reading is not right. That stock does not easily go up. A 10% move in that stock is like, that's glacial. . .I just think that Ford's going to get a break here. laurel-and-michael-evans-c-KDq7nxVdQ-unsplash 'I just think that Ford has the most made in America. Of these manufacturers. So that's why I think that Ford's up actually. Somehow I think they feel that they could get some relief. Because they are the largest makers of autos in this country. So why are they the most hurt? It is a little counterintuitive. And I think that their case will not be special pleading. I think it will be something the President will endorse. Not that, I wasn't in the White House, but I think Jim Farley has a very good case that he should not have to bear the brunt because he makes the most in this country.' Futuristic Chevrolet Corvette concept cars signal the brand's future

General Motors revealed two concept cars Aug. 15: the Chevrolet Corvette CX and the CX.R Vision Gran Turismo. Fighter jets and video games served as inspiration for the designs the company called "aggressively futuristic." The reveals took place at The Quail, a vehicle event in Carmel, California. The CX, an all-electric vehicle, and the CX.R, a hybrid, represent the latest and last of several Corvette concepts GM rolled out this year. Multiple GM studios were tasked with drafting Corvette-inspired hypercars. The first came out of GM's UK studio in March and the second was revealed last month, from GM's Pasadena, California, studio. Both concepts were electric. GM's design network spans studios in Michigan, Southern California, China, South Korea and the United Kingdom. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! There are no stated production plans for either concept. They 'will influence where we go forward,' Phil Zak, executive design director at Chevrolet, said in a call to media. He added that prior to the design experiment this year, Corvette hadn't produced a concept since 2009. More: Cadillac Elevated Velocity SUV concept previews the future of the brand's performance EVs The most notable design element is the CX's sculpted canopy opening. The front of the CX swings up and forward similar to tipping a fedora hat. In lieu of doors, a driver must vault over the side to enter the vehicle. The electric all-wheel-drive supercar has four motors, one for each wheel, generating more than 2,000 horsepower. Designers opted to mount the 90-kWh lithium-ion battery in the chassis for a low center of gravity and ideal front-rear weight distribution. The CX.R is slated to be featured in the latest installment of the long-running racing game Gran Turismo 7 later this month. The hybrid has a midmounted 2.0-liter, dual-overhead-cam, twin-turbo V8 engine, making up to 900 horsepower and an engine speed of 15,000 rpm. The V8 drives the rear wheels while three electric motors – one for each front wheel, plus a third in the 8-speed gearbox – bring a system output of 2,000 hp, the company said. Tested: 2026 Lucid Gravity Dream Edition Is a Magic Bus

A sedan-only lineup is not a winning strategy these days, which is why fledgling automaker Lucid Motors is adding the Gravity SUV, available as either a five- or seven-seater, as a follow-up to its excellent Air sedan. While plenty of us think the Gravity's lozenge form factor and low roof look more minivan than rough-and-tumble SUV, the aerodynamics-first design is great for efficiency and range. While this limited-edition Dream model's summer tires reduce its EPA estimated range figure, the most efficient Grand Touring version earns 450 miles of EPA range, which is 98 percent of what the bluff Cadillac Escalade IQ gets, even though the Lucid has only 60 percent of the Cadillac's battery energy. view exterior photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver Despite the low roof, the Gravity's packaging is near-minivan excellent, with a sprawling second row and a third row that's comfortable even for six-plus-footers. Remarkably, the seat cushions are not squashed to the floor to create headroom, so this isn't a knees-in-the-chest situation, either. Interior materials are top-shelf, and the front seats have great wrap-around support. Again, compared with the Escalade iQ, the Gravity has similar passenger space in all three rows, as well as cargo space in back, despite having almost 17 inches less wheelbase and a roofline that's nearly a foot lower. HIGHS: Three roomy rows of seats, Corvette Z06–level acceleration, more fun to drive than other three-row EVs. But enough left-brain talk. Plenty of EVs are quick, but more impressive than the 1070-hp Gravity's 3.1-second rush to 60 mph is the second wave of thrust beyond that speed. The front end lifts, the steering goes light, and the Lucid rockets to an easy 160 mph. Its 10.6-second quarter-mile is neck and neck with a Corvette Z06's, and by 150 mph, the Gravity is nearly a full three seconds ahead. It's the quickest SUV we've ever tested. view interior Photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver view interior Photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver Better than the raw speed is that the Gravity drives with verve heretofore unseen in the ranks of heavy, three-row electric SUVs. It's rare that any vehicle is so unerringly neutral that it wants to go tail out around our 300-foot skidpad—the Toyota GR86 comes to mind—but the Gravity, shockingly, requires countersteer. Its helm is satisfyingly sharp, too, and you can feel the rear-steer system quickening the Gravity's responses. The ride quality is surprisingly reasonable—its air springs no doubt help—especially considering the 22-inch front and 23-inch rear wheels and Pirelli P Zero PZ5 summer tires. And the 1.5-inch-wide front brake rotors look more Le Mans racer than street car—no wonder they haul down the three-ton Gravity with zero fade. LOWS: A few rough edges, lower-spec versions will be better values. There are a few details that feel unfinished. The power mechanism for the second-row seats is loud and moves coarsely, the head-up display is unreadable, the folding mechanism for the third row is wobbly, the lane-centering function can be jerky, and the Gravity erroneously dimmed its infotainment screens repeatedly on a bright summer day. These are issues that the long-standing automakers likely would have addressed, and Lucid could fix at least some of these things with over-the-air software updates. view exterior photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver view exterior photos Marc Urbano | Car and Driver While it remains to be seen how the Gravity might ignite Lucid's sales, as with the Air, lower-powered, less-expensive models will be a much better value. As for its appearance, our staff most frequently compared it to the Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG, a flash-in-the-pan nameplate we loved even if the marketplace didn't. VERDICT: A mega minivan.
