Brendan Rodgers offers simple Celtic choice and the answer is always the same for one dedicated disciple
Celtic fans might be getting in a flap over the lack of clarity surrounding Brendan Rodgers ' direction of travel next summer.
But Liam Scales insists the manager's crystal clear messages have been the catalyst in his own journey from the fringes to becoming a central figure for club and country.
And for that reason the Irishman couldn't be any clearer himself when he says he would love Rodgers to extend his stay in the east end of Glasgow beyond the end of the season.
Rodgers sat down with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond this summer to discuss his own future but has given little away over what that might mean come next June.
Scales admits he owes the manager big time for the distance he's travelled over the last two years having been sent on loan to this afternoon's opponents Aberdeen in Ange Postecoglou's last season in charge.
The defender made 39 appearances for Celtic in the last campaign, won a double and took his cap count to 14, all of which have been won in the last two years.
It's no wonder he is desperate for Rodgers to remain in charge long term.
He said: 'Definitely, I really enjoy playing for him so the longer I can do that the better. He's a brilliant manager, I've learned a lot from him.
'It's been a really good two past seasons for me so I'm just hoping to continue that and keep playing for him and keep doing the jobs that he asked me to do.
'It's been probably the best couple of years of my career so I'm just hoping it continues the way it has.
'For me the message is always clear with the manager. You can't question anything, it's always clear, it's always straight to the point.
'For me I've found that it's either a choice of following his instructions or not and I've been better off doing what he's said and doing what's been asked of me.
'That's helped me a lot because, as a player, it makes it simple if you know your job, you know your role exactly how the manager wants it to be.
'I think his communication has been brilliant to get his point across, that has helped me improve as a player and I think playing games under him I've become more comfortable in that sense so I think that would be a massive strength of his.'
Celtic face Aberdeen this afternoon for the first time since the Dons wrecked the Treble hopes with a sensational Scottish Cup Final triumph at Hampden back in May.
Scales admits the pain of that afternoon dug deep. The sight of Callum McGregor in tears after missing a spot kick in the shoot out spoke volumes for the desire to succeed in Rodgers' squad.
And Scales said: 'Everyone felt the pain of that and that's just Callum's desire to win - I think that's what drives us every season.
'It happens in football, you can't win every game, you can't win every trophy.
'We obviously all were disappointed. But I think at this club you don't need any more motivation than what we already get week in and week out from the staff to the players.
'There's a massive drive to win and it comes from the fans as well.
'I don't think we needed any more motivation, it was just a sore one.
'I think I speak for everyone saying it hurt. But we've had time to get over it in the summer and it's a new season now.
'We're just excited to do all we can to win as much as we can this year and that's in the past now.'
Celtic haven't lost at Pittodrie since February 2016 and incredibly are unbeaten against the Dons over 90 minutes in 32 clashes.
But Scales insists the memory of Hampden is all the evidence they need to take nothing for granted - especially after leaving it late to squeeze past St Mirren in last weekend's Premiership opener.
He said: 'One hundred per cent. Aberdeen are a good side. They played well that day, they defended well and it was an even game.
'It's never easy, sometimes it might look like it can be easy because you win most games or you go on winning streaks in Scotland, but it's not easy.
'There's a lot of good teams and they're tough to play against.
'We've seen against St Mirren last weekend, they're strong and good defensively and sometimes it takes time to break teams down and there's always a chance you're not going to win every game. But we all know that.'

Ex-Celtic boss facing BANKRUPTCY after racking up huge unpaid debts of £1.5million
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FORMER Celtic manager is facing bankruptcy again - just two years after he last fended off the threat of financial ruin. Despite a glorious playing career his spell at Celtic didn't go well and since retiring from playing he has multiple run-ins with HMRC. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 3 John Barnes had an ill-fated spell as Celtic's head coach Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd 3 But he is a cult hero for England, Watford, Liverpool and Newcastle Credit: Getty 3 He has also been a pundit in his time since retiring Credit: Getty Ex-Liverpool, Newcastle United and England hero John Barnes was on the receiving end of a petition lodged at the High Court today by the tax authorities. It was filed close to two months after it emerged Barnes had racked up more than £1.5 million in debts at his media company, John Barnes Media Limited. That included almost £800,000 due to HMRC. The most recent liquidators' report on his media firm showed he owed HMRC £776,878 in unpaid VAT, NI and PAYE. The 61-year-old was banned from being a company director for more than three-and-a-half years in 2024, after his company failed to pay more than £78,000 in corporation tax between August 2018 and January 2020. And the business was found to have failed to pay nearly £200,000 in corporation tax and VAT combined during that 18-month period, following a report by the Insolvency Agency. Barnes also owed unsecured creditors £461,849, a directors loan worth £226,000, and liquidators' costs amounting to £56,535. The cult hero winger, who won two league titles and two FA Cups at Anfield, has staved off multiple previous bankruptcy petitions since 2010. He last avoided going bust in May 2023 after settling a personal-tax bill of more than £200,000. Another petition lodged against him was dismissed in court later that same year. Rangers could soon be TEN points behind Celtic fears Kris Boyd - plus Plzen preview In the most recent case, Barnes has paid back £60,000 in instalments, according to the liquidators' report. Mike Smith, chief investigator at the Insolvency Service, said: "Individuals and businesses not paying the tax they should deprives the Government of the funding it needs to provide vital public services and investment in areas such as schools, hospitals and roads. "John Barnes had a legal duty to ensure his company paid the correct amount of corporation tax and VAT. Instead, it paid no tax whatsoever between November 2018 and October 2020, despite receiving earnings of well over £400,000. "This disqualification should serve as a deterrent to other directors that if you do not pay your taxes while directing money elsewhere, you are at risk of being banned." Barnes, who had an ill-fated spell as Celtic manager between 1999 and 2000, set up his media business in 2012. He also managed Jamaica and Tranmere Rovers and has appeared as a pundit since hanging up his boots. Between November 2018 and October 2020 (the period in which close to £200,000 of unpaid debt to HMRC was accrued), the company had a turnover of £441,798. The Insolvency Service said nothing was paid to HMRC in tax during that period, despite the company filing returns showing what the VAT payments should have been. An investigation found that not only had the company failed to pay £78,839 in that period but also failed to pay £115,272 in VAT between February 2019 and 2020. The company ceased trading in January 2020 and it later entered liquidation. Barnes has previously declared he "doesn't like dealing with taxes". He admitted so to The Telegraph back in 2009 after he saw a bankruptcy order against him rescinded following what he called a "tax oversight". Barnes said then: "I don't like dealing with taxes of course. "I just hate not having enough money. Apart from that, I don't like dealing with bills and never have done. I let my wife Andrea deal with them. I don't even like opening them. A few times my credit card has been declined when I've been travelling abroad. "Then I have to get creative about paying the bill and have to really root around. That's much more satisfying than just having it come easily." Kieran Tierney gets early POTY tip as returning Celtic star already forming 'unstoppable' partnership with Hoops pal
Tierney clinched his dream return to his boyhood club earlier this summer after six years away from Glasgow's east end Kieran Tierney will lap up the player of the year awards at Celtic this season if he can keep himself fit. That's according to former Scotland hero Pat Nevin, who is tipping the full back to form an 'unstoppable' partnership with Daizen Maeda down the Hoops' left. Tierney sealed his sensational Parkhead return from Arsenal earlier this summer after previously penning a pre-contract agreement. The 28-year-old has started in both of Celtic's victories in their two opening Premiership games but has yet to play for the full 90 minutes. And if the Tartan Army favourite can avoid the injury problems that plagued his six-year stint with the Gunners, Nevin reckons Celtic will 'destroy' teams with the threat that the full back offers Brendan Rodgers going forward. Ex Hibs and Chelsea star Nevin told football betting site BetVictor: "If Kieran Tierney stays fit, will he be the player of the season. I mean, he looked that for 45, 55 minutes at home, and he was fully fit for the first hour of the game. "He was dynamite, down the left-hand side. was a left winger, he was a left back, left midfield. "He had a brilliant understanding of last year's best player. "With Daizen Maeda, if they play on the left-hand side together, in terms of Scottish football, they will be unstoppable if he stays fit. No one will stop them. "They will put in cross after cross after cross, they will get into brilliant positions with great game awareness and intelligence. "They've already set up a brilliant partnership on that left-hand side and I know what it's like if you're a wide player, the most important player on the pitch for the guy behind you. "You have to have an understanding of it and you hope he's good, I played with some good ones over here, Stevie Clark being one of them. When you have that, you can destroy teams. "You absolutely destroy teams. They will do that. "If Kieran stays fit, it's not a matter of if he could be the player of the year, it's that he will be."

I was determined to make instant impact, says new Celtic star Benjamin Nygren
The summer signing from Nordsjaelland grabbed his first goal for the club when he swept home Kieran Tierney's low cross to put Celtic in front at Aberdeen on Sunday. The 24-year-old hit the bar on his debut against St Mirren the previous weekend after being preferred to the likes of club record signing Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo in Brendan Rodgers' starting line-up. After hitting 15 goals in the Danish top flight last season and scoring twice in his first four internationals, Nygren was intent on making his mark early. 🕺#ABECEL | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) August 10, 2025 'I didn't come here to not play,' Nygren said. 'So of course I came here to try to come in fast and also show my abilities in training and training games. So of course I came here to help the team win games.' Nygren also set up Reo Hatate's goal in a 2-0 William Hill Premiership win over the Dons, although he was quick to play down his role in the Japanese midfielder's wonderful finish. However, he could have had a special assist moments later when he played a deft ball over the top which Daizen Maeda latched on to before losing his footing as he ran towards goal. Nygren knows there is a demand to contribute when he gets game time for Celtic, given the strength in depth in Rodgers' midfield. Benjamin Nygren nets his first for Celtic 🎯💚 Finishing from close range after a pinpoint Tierney cross#ABECEL | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) August 10, 2025 'It's part of football, that's how it is in big clubs,' the former IFK Gothenburg player said. 'It would be weird if there were only 11 good players in such a big team as Celtic. I think we have, I don't know how many, 25-30 good players in Celtic, but only 11 can start the game. 'It's a very long season and now we've only played our two first games, so we will need a lot of players and a lot of good quality players. I think we have that.' Benjamin Nygren delivers the breakthrough with his first goal for the Bhoys ⚽💚#ABECEL | #CelticFC🍀 — Celtic Football Club (@CelticFC) August 10, 2025 Nygren's goal and his near miss against St Mirren both came from similar moves, with the Swede arriving on to a low ball from the left. 'That's also why I scored many goals last season, because I can run a lot,' he said. 'I always come a little bit from behind.' Nygren started in central midfield and finished the game on the wing and is happy to show his versatility. 'I think it's preferably like I started the game, but I'm a player that has played a lot of positions, so for me I don't think too much of the positions, it's football,' he said. 'You need football intelligence. It's all football.'
