Lauren, an author of best-selling memoirs and true-crime books, has been charged with discharge of a firearm with gross negligence and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. She faces up to 19 years in federal prison if convicted. According to the Los Angeles Times, prosecutors are also looking to apply a firearms sentencing enhancement.

A quick refresher for the uninitiated: on April 9th, officers were searching for three suspects allegedly involved in a hit-and-run when they encountered Lauren wielding a firearm in her backyard. As seen in body cam footage released by the LAPD, officers repeatedly instructed her to lower her weapon before she fired at least one shot. In response, officers fired back, striking her in the arm, after which Lauren fled back into her residence.
Lauren remained inside for approximately an hour and called 911, before eventually surrendering to the police, who charged her with attempted murder. According to audio released by the LAPD, it appears that Lauren believed she was shooting at the hit-and-run suspects, unaware that they were police officers.
Lauren is expected to return to court on June 18th for a preliminary hearing.

LAPD: Over 100 arrests Monday night, 2 officers injured

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said over 100 people were arrested Monday night amid recent Los Angeles-area protests against arrests made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In a Tuesday press release, the department said that it, alongside 'multiple local law enforcement partners, responded to protest and criminal activity in the downtown area' Monday. The LAPD said 96 people were arrested over 'Failure to Disperse,' one person was arrested over 'Assault with a Deadly Weapon,' one person was arrested over 'Resisting Arrest' and another over 'Vandalism' that night. 'Two LAPD officers were injured and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and released,' the LAPD said in the release, adding later that 14 people were arrested over 'Looting.' California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) recently claimed that President Trump's deployment of troops to Los Angeles amid ongoing protests against Trump administration immigration raids was a warning to other states. 'Pod Save America' host Tommy Vietor asked the Golden State governor what his message was to people in all the other U.S. states who believe, 'Eh, this is just Trump going after crazy California, where all the liberals are like, we'll be fine.' 'To preview things to come. It's a coming attraction,' Newsom said Monday on 'Pod Save America.' 'I mean you, I'm sure you guys have been saying it. This is what he did to create the conditions that led to the insurrection on January 6th.' Trump and Newsom have been going at it over unrest in Los Angeles in recent days. On Monday, Trump said he would support arresting the Golden State governor, Newsom responded to on X. 'The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America,' Newsom said on X.

Newsom Posts AI-Generated Videos Mimicking Star Wars' Emperor Palpatine Reading Trump Tweets

Gavin Newsom cast aside subtlety today in his war of words — and now lawsuits — with President Donald Trump. The California Governor's Press Office posted two seemingly AI-generated TikTok videos with a voice that sounds a lot like Star Wars' Emperor Palpatine (played by Ian McDiarmid) reading recent military-minded posts from the president related to the unrest in Los Angeles. More from Deadline Gavin Newsom Seeks Immediate Order To Block Donald Trump's Federal Troop Patrols In Los Angeles Donald Trump Responds To Gavin Newsom's Dare To Arrest Him, Says He 'Would Do It' If He Were The Border Czar CNN Correspondent Detained By LAPD, Camera Crew Arrested The first features a very marital, John Williams-sounding score playing over animated images of storm troopers mobilizing on the ground as star destroyers float overhead. The ominous voice reading Trump's words begins, 'A once great American city, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by illegal aliens and criminals…' You can watch it below. The Trump text used in the video warns that 'Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated' if not for his interventions. Watch it below. LOS ANGELES WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY OBLITERATED! — Governor Newsom Press Office (@GovPressOffice) June 10, 2025 Newsom is, of course, taking a page from Trump's playbook here. The president is fond of posting AI-generated video and images related to current news events. In February, as conflict raged in Gaza, the president posted AI video that featured a transformed Gaza full of beaches, skyscrapers and gold Trump statues, with odd appearances from an AI-generated Elon Musk and Trump sipping a cocktail at the beach with a topless Benjamin Netanyahu. The posting garnered heavy criticism from the PLO and neighboring Arab nations. The trailer shows Maggie Q as Detective Renee Ballard navigating the challenges that come with helming the "new and underfunded" department at LAPD.
