With the 2024-25 NBA season coming to a close, soon all eyes will be on the offseason. This offseason is expected to be one for the books, and the first big event on the calendar will be the 2025 NBA Draft.
The draft, which will take place in late June, is one worth watching, and it will feature one of the best prospects of the last decade, Duke superstar phenom Cooper Flagg.
Flagg is on track to be the top selection in this year's draft, and all indications suggest the Mavericks will use their No. 1 pick on him later this month.
Sources tell ESPN that the Mavericks will host Flagg for a workout in mid-June.

"The Mavericks have no plans to work out any other prospects for the No. 1 pick and have made clear publicly and privately that they plan on selecting Flagg when Adam Silver puts them on the clock to open the 2025 NBA Draft."
Dallas made it clear from the jump that they had no plans to move the No. 1 pick after landing it in the draft lottery. That stance hasn't changed — and the fact that they're reportedly not entertaining any other prospect speaks volumes about how highly they view Flagg.
Flagg is fresh off a legendary freshman campaign at Duke — one that's already being talked about as one of the greatest ever by a college player.
His accolades tell the story: AP Player of the Year, consensus First-Team All-American, Lute Olson Award winner, Julius Erving Award winner, Wayman Tisdale Award winner, ACC Player of the Year, First-Team All-ACC, ACC Rookie of the Year, ACC All-Defensive Team, and ACC All-Freshman Team.
The Mavericks have had a roller coaster of a season. They start the season a bit shaky, and then they make what most call a boneheaded move by trading their superstar, Luka Doncic, to the Lakers. After that, they endure a stretch of injuries unlike any other, and they end the season with the No. 1 pick.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has endured a ton of criticism, and he deserves it; however, that could all change in the coming months with how he builds this team for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

As the situation persists, a new challenge has emerged, according to The Athletic's Sam Amick. The latest trade talks with the Sacramento Kings have seen the Kings offer up Malik Monk and a protected first-round pick in exchange for Kuminga. However, this hasn't been viewed favorably by the Warriors' front office for several reasons, one being the potential need to part with Buddy Hield or Moses Moody. Amick tweeted: "A quick (and belated) follow-up on the Jonathan Kuminga reporting from Friday: Anyone saying the first-round pick protections are the only obstacle to a Kings-Warriors sign-and-trade is wrong, as I'm told Golden State really doesn't want to move either Buddy Hield or Moses Moody (which would be required)." The consensus has suggested that the Warriors were unsatisfied with the Kings' offer, primarily because of the protections associated with the pick. But Amick's report presents a different outlook. Should the Warriors hypothetically agree with the trade package, they would have to shed some salary to get under the first apron. This would require them to trade away either Moody or Hield this offseason. Rumors early in the offseason had suggested that Golden State would be likely to part ways with Moody, but this doesn't seem to hold anymore. When considering what the 23-year-old can bring to the table with his two-way potential, the Warriors would prefer to retain him. Moody didn't receive significant playing time last season, averaging 22.3 minutes per game during the regular season. Still, he found ways to be productive, averaging 9.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game on shooting splits of 43.3% from the field and 37.4% from beyond the arc. Hield, too, seems to be viewed favorably by Golden State. After one complete season with the Warriors, the guard showcased his ability to step in and knock down some big shots when called upon. Although he drew criticism for his shot selection, Hield still managed to have a solid debut season with the team. In 82 games, he averaged 11.1 points and 3.2 rebounds, while shooting 41.7% from the field and 37.0% from three-point range. Retaining these two rotation pieces may also be necessary for the Warriors in light of their pending roster moves. With effectively no new additions to the team, Golden State needs to hold on to some key pieces to ensure they have a balanced roster heading into next season. The Kuminga trade saga is expected to lose momentum, as Amick also added that the Warriors expect to see the forward on the team's roster for the upcoming season. Many people have considered Luka Doncic one of the three to five best players in the NBA over the last few years. It's no wonder why, as he has career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists a game and possesses the third-highest regular-season scoring average and second-best playoff scoring average in league history. Now that he has transformed his body this summer, his best basketball could be ahead of him, and that is a scary proposition for every NBA team not named the Los Angeles Lakers. But in HoopsHype's latest ranking of the league's top point guards, Doncic came in second behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder. "Following the disrespect of shockingly being traded by Dallas, the franchise that Doncic expected to spend his entire career with, it seems the Slovenian superstar has taken that to heart and used it to motivate him this offseason," wrote Frank Urbina. "Considering that Doncic historically hasn't always been the best about taking his summers seriously as far as his fitness level, that could be a great sign for the Los Angeles Lakers - and a scary one for the team's opponents in 2025-26. "An elite scorer, playmaker and rebounder for his position, Doncic is just lacking on the defensive side of the ball, but perhaps with his improved fitness level heading into the campaign, that might change, too. Regardless, Doncic remains on the path of first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, and we expect him to get right back to 1st Team All-NBA-level play in 2025-26, which should put the Lakers in championship contender status." In a way, it does make sense that Gilgeous-Alexander earned the top spot in HoopsHype's ranking. He just finished a campaign in which he led the NBA in scoring and earned the regular-season and finals MVP awards, not to mention his first championship. But he isn't the passer or rebounder that Doncic is, and he may not be quite as deadly as Doncic is in crunch time. Urbina did mention that HoopsHype could regret ranking the Lakers superstar at No. 2 by next summer, especially given that he is much leaner and fitter now.

According to the Denver Nuggets On SI and Legion Hoops, the Sacramento Kings stand out as a prime contender for the future Hall of Famer, with some competition possibly being upon the 36-year-old Westbrook. "The Sacramento Kings have been in talks with Westbrook for an extended period and have a mutual interest. However, with their deep rotation of guards, including Dennis Schröder, Devin Carter, Keon Ellis and Malik Monk, it could make for a crowded backcourt," Grant Mona of Nuggets On SI. Mona also brought up the New York Knicks, who are currently looking for a backup point guard. "The New York Knicks are still looking for a backup point guard, and Westbrook is on a short list of players they are taking a look at. Ben Simmons, who is also a free agent and can play point guard and small-ball center, is among the candidates for New York." Westbrook still has under three months to find a team, one that he could potentially finally clinch the NBA championship that has eluded him since he was drafted by the Thunder in the 2008 NBA Draft.
