Super League clubs to face bi-monthly financial checks

New Straits Times13 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Super League clubs will be monitored every two months throughout the 2025-2026 season to ensure they comply with the Malaysian Football League's (MFL) Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
The MFL's FFP Unit will carry out five reviews in total, with clubs required to submit reports on income, expenditure, salary declarations and statutory contributions for each two-month period. The first deadline is on Oct 16, covering August and September.
Chairman of the independent First Instance Body (FIB) Sheikh Nasir Sheikh Sharif said any arrears would be referred to the FIB for action under Articles 10 and 14(1)(B), with penalties possible for breaches.
He confirmed all Super League clubs had already submitted their budget and pre-season documents for 2025-2026, which include budgets, sponsors' letters of agreement, and lists of players, officials and staff with details of salaries and contributions to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO).
A declaration of arrears as of June 2025 was also lodged in line with FFP regulations under Articles 9(1) and 10(1), before verification by the FFP Unit.
"FIB is responsible for reviewing and assessing the documents to ensure clubs adhere to sustainable financial management principles in line with MFL's FFP criteria.
"The submissions allow MFL to determine the total budget to be used for salary and contribution payments based on the salary cap of 80 per cent," Sheikh Nasir said.
The documents will be assessed under the 2025-2026 FFP regulations, with breaches subject to sanction. – BERNAMA

Doumbia's double draws cheers but it can't soothe Cops' sore point

PETALING JAYA: Police's new signing Henri Doumbia made a bittersweet start in the Super League by netting a brace against Terengganu but the Cops had to settle for a 2-2 draw at the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak on Wednesday. The 32-year-old Ivorian striker, who arrived from the United Arab Emirates second division team Emirates Club earlier this month, said his joy of scoring was incomplete as he was left reflecting over the sore point. 'I'm proud to make my debut in a new league with two goals but I'm also a little sad that the team could not collect full points,'' said Doumbia. ''We may have played well in the first two games, but we wished we had picked up six points instead of only two. 'In football, it doesn't matter how well you play - people will judge you for the points.' Doumbia scored in the 12th and 53rd minutes to give Police a 2-0 lead before Terengganu fought back through rightback Azam Azmi Murad in the 63rd, and French striker Yann Mabella who converted a penalty in the last minute. Police were also held to a 2-2 draw by Brunei in their first match, which Doumbia did not feature in. In that game, the Cops had to do the fighting back as they conceded two goals after just six minutes. ''I hope we will learn from these games and ensure that we get a win in our next match,' added Doumbia, whose wide playing experience included stints in Thailand with Saraburi, Angthong, Chainat and Nakhon Ratchasima, and also clubs in Kuwait and Jordan. Police's next challenge will be against Negri Sembilan in the FA Cup round-of-16 first leg at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium on Monday. But while the coaching staff pore over video analyses of the Deer, Doumbia prefers to read the opponents on the field. 'For me, each match has a different reality. Take Terengganu, when they beat Penang 3-0, their pressing, intensity, and passing were different. 'Against us, they were different again. We would only know how the team would be on match day.'

Dream debut for Deeromram as he turns finisher twice in Red Giants victory

PETALING JAYA: It was a dream night for Kevin Deeromram as the Selangor wingback scored twice in their 3-0 Super League victory over Brunei on Tuesday. Remarkably, the 27-year-old is not even a striker. Deeromram found the net in the fifth and 36th minutes at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, both goals coming from pinpoint crosses delivered by fellow wingback Quentin Cheng. Relishing a role reversal: Selangor's Kevin Deeromram rejoicing after scoring a brace in their 3-0 win over Brunei. — Selangor FC It was a role reversal for Deeromram, who is usually the one providing assists. During his stint with Thailand's Port FC, particularly last season, he was a creative force – topping the assist charts with 11. Brazilian winger Chrigor Moraes then wrapped up the win for the Red Giants with a 67th-minute strike. For Deeromram, it was the perfect way to mark his first home appearance. 'Our aim was to get our first three points and we did it,' said the Swedish-born Thai international. 'I'm delighted to score my first goals for the club and to experience the atmosphere here in Petaling Jaya. It was beautiful, and I hope it continues. 'I hope the fans enjoy the way I play. Of course, scoring is a great way to introduce myself, but I still prefer creating chances for my teammates as that's my style, and that's why I was brought here.' The win was also the ideal response to their disappointing 0-3 defeat to Johor Darul Ta'zim in the Charity Shield on Aug 8. 'We didn't perform well against JDT, so we had a chat after the game about what we could do better,' said Deeromram. The left-sided flyer says he is settling quickly in Malaysia, thanks to the warm welcome from his teammates and coaches. 'I'm adapting well as the boys have been great, and the coach has been clear with what he wants. 'The Malaysian League is competitive, quite similar to what I experienced in Thailand.' Beyond club success, Kevin has another target in mind – a return to the Thai national team ahead of next month's international window. Thailand will compete in the King's Cup in Kanchanaburi, facing Fiji first on Sept 4, followed by either Iraq or Hong Kong on Sept 7. 'I would love to play for Thailand again and I want to be given that chance. Hopefully, the coach calls me up for the upcoming camp.' For now, though, Selangor fans will be hoping for Deeromram to not just provide assists, but take his chances too.

Emotional equaliser as Brazilian Peres saves Rhinos in the nick of time

Pointing to the heavens: Sabah's Gabriel Peres (left) celebrating with teammates after scoring against Kuala Lumpur during their Super League match at the Cheras Football Stadium. — GLENN GUAN/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah defender Gabriel Peres' last-gasp equaliser against Kuala Lumpur in their Super League match at the Cheras Football Stadium on Wednesday meant the world to the Brazilian. For the 28-year-old centreback, it was a golden goal that welcomed him back to the game he loved so much after being away for far too long due to a knee injury. Peres' unbridled joy and emotions were for all to see, as he sprinted towards the Sabah supporters with arms outstretched after saving the Rhinos from the jaws of defeat. As his teammates swarmed around him, tears glistened in his eyes as he is finally living the moment he had dreamed of during lonely, gruelling months of recovery. 'I have no words to describe this moment,' said Peres. 'I just have to thank God above all and my family, teammates and the coaching staff who always trusted me. ''We're all a family, united by a purpose.' Peres said the goal was more than a statistic - it was proof that perseverance has its reward. 'This goal is not just mine. It belongs to everyone who never stopped believing in me when I couldn't be on the pitch. It's for them.' Against the City Boys, Sabah found themselves trailing after New Zealand rightback Dane Ingham's unfortunate own goal in the 65th minute. Just as the clock ticked past 90 minutes and hope began to fade, Sabah were awarded a free-kick which was deftly taken by midfielder Stuart Wilkin, and met with a perfectly timed leap from Peres for the equaliser. As for KL coach Risto Vidakovic, he called the late strike 'the worst feeling' for his side. 'We had chances to finish off the game, especially in the second half. We controlled the match after Sabah played with one player less when Dean (Pelekanos) was sent off in the 43rd minute,' said the Bosnian. 'We didn't deserve this draw, we needed the three. But this is football, it happens.''
