Kyle Schwarber delivers National League the All-Star Game win in epic home run swing-off

New York Post16-07-2025
In a first in MLB history, the All-Star Game was decided by a home run swing-off, ending a dramatic Midsummer Classic that saw the National League blow a six-run lead before winning in the mini-slugfest.
With the NL and AL sending up three sluggers each to try and duke it out for the win, the Senior Circuit got the better of the AL thanks to the big bat of Phillies star Kyle Schwarber in a 4-3 home run derby win after they played to a 6-6 tie through nine innings.
Schwarber, who on the game's MVP, went 3-for-3 in his home run at-bats, eliminating a 3-1 deficit to gain the lead.

Yankees Release SP Marcus Stroman After Failing to Trade Him

The New York Yankees released veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman on Friday, a day after making a flurry of moves at baseball's trade deadline. The Yankees had attempted to deal Stroman elsewhere ahead of Thursday's deadline, per ESPN, but failed to find any takers. With Luis Gil set to return from a rehab assignment for a lat strain that's cost him the entirety of 2025 so far, there was no room left either in the rotation or roster for Stroman. In addition to the imminent return of Gil, the Yankees acquired All-Star relievers David Bednar and Camilo Doval, as well as utilityman Jose Caballero in separate trades Thursday. New York also optioned right-handers Ian Hamilton and Yerry de los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room on the 26-man roster. Stroman signed a two-year deal worth $37 million with New York before the start of last season and is still owed the remaining $5.6 million in 2025. Once Stroman clears waivers, any other team is free to sign him for the prorated league minimum, with the Yankees continuing to pay him the bulk of his salary. Stroman has an $18 million conditional player option for 2026 that would be exercised if he pitches 140 or more innings in 2025, though, that's unlikely, given he has pitched only 39 innings so far this season — Stroman missed 2 1/2 months with left knee inflammation. He was in the rotation in the first place due to the injury to Gil as well as team ace Gerrit Cole – Stroman looked like he was the odd man out in the starting five before those injuries made room for him before spring training ended. He made his ninth start of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, picking up the win after allowing four runs and six hits in five innings. He finishes his 2025 with New York with a 3-2 record and 6.23 ERA. While he's pitched better in his six starts since returning from the IL in June, Stroman has still produced a 4.55 ERA in that stretch. Stroman, who is in his 11th season in the majors, was cut ahead of the opener of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Cade Horton tosses 2-hit ball over 5 innings as Cubs beat Orioles 1-0

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Cade Horton tossed two-hit ball over five innings, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a terrific start by Trevor Rogers to beat the Baltimore Orioles 1-0 on Friday. The Cubs showed a video tribute of Ryne Sandberg and held 23 seconds of silence prior to their first home game since the Hall of Famer died. Former teammates Shawon Dunston, Jody Davis and Rick Sutcliffe then honored their friend by carrying a base onto the field and placing it at second. A few hours earlier, Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the 2027 All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field during a news conference at home plate with Chicago Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, Gov. JB Pritzker and mayor Brandon Johnson. Ian Happ hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning against Rogers, and the Cubs started the weekend series on a winning note after losing two of three at Milwaukee. They began the day trailing the NL Central-leading Brewers by one game. Horton (5-3) delivered his third straight scoreless outing. Caleb Thielbar, newcomer Andrew Kittredge and Brad Keller each worked an inning. Daniel Palencia pitched around a two-out double by Adley Rutschman in the ninth, retiring Tyler O'Neill on a fly to deep left for his 15th save in 16 chances. Rogers (4-2) was a tough-luck loser for Baltimore. The left-hander matched a career high by going eight innings and allowed one run and four hits. He struck out eight and walked none. Key stat Horton has gone 17 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Up next The Cubs send All-Star LHP Matthew Boyd (11-4, 2.47 ERA) to the mound, and the Orioles go with RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (8-5, 4.38). ___
