Robo-surgeries soar as AI boosts surgical efficiency, diagnostic precision
Fast forward to 2025, robotic surgeries are no longer a rarity in the India. Industry estimates indicate that the country has so far witnessed over 150,000 robot-assisted surgeries, in addition to fully robotic surgeries. The country is now seeing over 12,000 robotic procedures performed by around 1,000 surgeons annually.
According to industry experts, artificial intelligence (AI) is adding to the efficiency of these procedures through predictive analytics, clinical decision support through personalised treatment pathways and diagnostic precision, use of generative AI for clinical documentation, and real-time AI-driven insights supporting efficient resource allocation and decision-making.
AI can reduce operation times by around 15 per cent. With 5G and telemedicine evolving further, such procedures are even done remotely now. If numbers are to be believed, India is fast becoming a destination for international patients seeking robotic surgeries, due to at least a 50 per cent cost advantage compared to countries like the United States and those in Europe. The majority of patients opting for India are from the US, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Oman, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Australia. Driven by global interest, India's surgical robotics market is expected to grow reportedly from around $900 million now to almost $4 billion by the financial year 2031 (FY31).
The rapid growth in robotic surgeries can be gauged by the rate at which such procedures are increasing in private chains like Apollo Hospitals. It was one of the first hospitals to start robotic surgery, way back in 2011, and has so far conducted a total of 22,145 procedures. Out of that, around 8 per cent or 1,751 surgeries were conducted during the April to June quarter of FY26.
'Robotic surgeries are being done by us for complex procedures including cardiac, oncology, orthopaedics, spine and neuro, gastrointestinal, gynaecology, urology, and general surgery. The advantages range from enhanced precision, reduced recovery times, and improved patient outcomes through robotic-assisted procedures,' said Madhu Sasidhar, president and chief executive officer of Apollo's hospital division.
Robotic surgery gives medical professionals more flexibility, precision, and control than is feasible with conventional methods for performing a variety of complex procedures. According to Apollo, the most common clinical robotic surgical system has a camera arm and mechanical arms with surgical instruments attached. The surgeon controls the arms while seated at a computer console next to the operating table. The console shows the surgeon a high-definition, magnified, three-dimensional view of the surgery area. Among the several surgical systems across the world, Da Vinci is the most commonly used one in India.
Case Study
A 45-year-old man fell from his bike and suffered a blunt injury to his upper abdomen. By the time he was referred from a peripheral centre to Medanta's Lucknow Super Speciality Hospital, he was showing signs of internal bleeding and a drop in haemoglobin levels. Once the patient was stabilised, the surgical team decided to proceed with robotic-assisted surgery instead of the traditional open method.
'While other minimally invasive options were available, we went the robotic route because of the multiple advantages it offers over other methods,' said Sandeep Verma, director GI Surgery, Medanta Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow.
'In trauma, controlling bleeding with precision is critical. Robotic-assisted surgery gave us the manoeuvrability and dexterity needed to take fine sutures on the injured vein, which would have been very difficult using laparoscopy. With vascular structures, even a one-millimetre deviation can make a life-threatening difference,' he said. The entire procedure was completed robotically in under two hours and the patient recovered well and was discharged four days after surgery without complications.
Robotic-assisted surgery is still relatively uncommon in trauma care, mainly because such cases often require urgent intervention where open surgery is typically quicker and more widely practiced. However, Verma explained that in stable patients like this one, robotics can offer distinct benefits: precise repairs which were crucial in reducing trauma to surrounding tissues, less postoperative pain, and quicker return to normal activities.
'Another advantage of robotics is that we can reach complex and hard-to-reach areas with better control and visibility, which supports enhanced outcomes,' he noted.
Soaring popularity of robots
It is this higher efficiency level, lower post-surgery expenses, fewer possibilities of infection at the surgical site, and reduced medical dosage that make the process popular among Indians. Prashant Hansraj Salvi, consultant minimal invasive, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, Jupiter Hospital, Thane, says that nowadays even patients themselves ask whether robotic procedures were feasible on them.
The rise in popularity is across the country, as another leading player, HealthCare Global Enterprises, said it conducted 1,100 robotic surgeries in FY25. 'The adoption of robotic-assisted procedures at HCG has been growing consistently at 11-14 per cent year-on-year, sustaining double-digit growth driven by increasing patient awareness and expanding clinical applications,' said B S Ajaikumar, founder and chairman, HealthCare Global Enterprises. Robotic-assisted surgery at HCG sees the highest traction in urology, head and neck oncology, and gastrointestinal oncology.
According to an Industry Trends and Forecast research report, around 35 per cent of surgical robotics adoption is happening in North India (led by Delhi-NCR) due to the presence of major hospitals like AIIMS and Fortis, closely followed by South India with 30 per cent led by around 34 robotic systems of Apollo Hospitals. West India, on the other hand, contributes 20 per cent with hospitals like Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital investing in multiple robotic systems. Penetration is lower in East India with 10 per cent, and Central and Northeast India together around 5 per cent.
'The price differential involved in robotic surgeries can vary on a case-by-case basis and depends mainly on the type of surgery. It is difficult to put a bracket on the cost difference, however usually the differential can vary between ~30,000 to ~150,000 for different procedures,' Ajmera said.
Despite the rising popularity, high initial and operational cost is a concern for hospitals. The report added that a Da Vinci robot can cost upwards of $1.5-2 million, with annual maintenance expenses ranging from $100,000-150,000, limiting adoption in smaller hospitals and rural healthcare facilities.
Companies like SS Innovations International, Meril Life Sciences, RIL-promoted Addverb Technologies,and Medtronic are taking giant strides in India to reduce this bottleneck. In addition to this, limited patient awareness, higher out-of-pocket expenses due to lack of comprehensive insurance coverage, and conventional methods having a lesser cost of around 70 per cent are hindering the sector's growth.
Well, despite all this, robotic surgeries are on the fast track, leading the Indian healthcare ecosystem to its future.

Fuel Fill-Ups in Space? Musk and Bezos Are Working on It
Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are trying to figure out how to pump gas in space. The billionaire space rivals are working on ambitious missions to the moon or Mars, and a crucial design element for each venture is using spacecraft that take on additional fuel while orbiting Earth. Vehicles that could grab propellants in orbit would be less weighed down at liftoff, letting planners design missions to travel farther from Earth with more cargo, scientific gear or crew members, advocates say. Having depots or in-orbit refueling that give spacecraft something like a truck stop to pull into may sound like science fiction. It is also a concept that engineers have been working on for years. One of the biggest challenges to making it a reality: moving and storing massive amounts of supercold propellants that are prone to boil off in the void of space. Both SpaceX and Blue Origin have much to prove. Some space-industry officials are skeptical that either will have moon landers that depend on orbital fueling ready to meet National Aeronautics and Space Administration timelines. The agency has worked closely with contractors to understand the challenges of in-space refueling, a NASA spokesman says. SpaceX conducted a fuel-transfer demonstration inside a Starship spacecraft during a 2024 test flight and next year is aiming to move propellants between two vehicles. That test has been delayed as the company has faced setbacks with the massive rocket, including an explosion during a ground test in Texas in June. Blue Origin is developing a transporter vehicle that would take on propellant near Earth. Then, it would fly to a lunar orbit, where the transporter would prepare a lander that would take astronauts arriving on a different ship down to the surface of the moon. That mission depends on the company's New Glenn rocket, which the company launched for the first time in January. Engineers have long built rockets and spacecraft to take on all the fuel they need while still on the ground. Those designs have proven their value. They also have their limitations. Take NASA's Apollo missions to the moon. Saturn V, the rocket that sent agency astronauts there, weighed 6.5 million pounds at liftoff, and around 5.5 million of those pounds were fuel. Combined with reusable rockets, fueling in space could make deep-space flights cheaper over time and ease mission logistics, supporters say. 'It has got to be done,' says Dallas Bienhoff, who formerly studied setting up a low-Earth-orbit propellant depot for Boeing and now works for Pasadena, Calif.-based robotic-mining company OffWorld. 'Otherwise, we're going to be limited with what we can achieve in space.' Musk put it this way during a conference talk in 2017. Starship, which then went by a different name, was expected to loft a spacecraft carrying a large amount of mass to low-Earth orbit. The ship wouldn't be able to travel farther without more fuel, he said. 'If you send up tankers, and refill in orbit, you can refill the tanks all the way to the top,' Musk said then. That would allow the ship to continue out to Mars, he added. From Apollo to the present Orbital refueling isn't a new idea. In the early 1960s, NASA officials considered such operations as they tried to figure out how to land astronauts on the lunar surface before the Soviets. The idea didn't go forward then, but it didn't go away. A range of in-space fueling experiments or operations have been conducted over the years, including by Russia. In 2007, the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and partners conducted more than a dozen fuel transfers between two satellites. But no U.S. company has put in-space propellant transfers at the center of their deep-space plans as SpaceX and Blue Origin have. Part of the reason is making it all work is difficult. Spacecraft will need to rendezvous in orbit, connect with each other and flow large amounts of propellants from one vehicle to another. The nature of the propellants SpaceX and Blue Origin have proposed using makes transferring them especially tricky. The fuels are chilled to supercold levels to keep them liquid, and have a tendency to boil off. 'It wouldn't be easy to do on Earth. But now you have to do it in space, pumping it from one big refrigerator to another,' says Thomas Cooley, formerly chief scientist for a space-vehicles group at the Air Force Research Laboratory who now has a space-consulting business. Dave Limp, chief executive at Blue Origin, said in a social-media post in July the company had made major progress maturing technologies that aim to prevent propellants from boiling off in space. Fuels also behave in odd ways in space. When you pump gasoline into your car's tank, the gas flows in a predictable manner but that isn't necessarily the case in orbit. There, companies will contend with what William Notardonato, chief executive of Eta Space, calls 'liquid-acquisition issues.' 'You don't know where your liquid is stored. The propellant might be up at the top of the tank. And it brings up the question, what is the top in microgravity?' says Notardonato, whose Rockledge, Fla.-based company is developing an in-space propellant depot and working on a mission where it will track how a supercold propellant behaves in a satellite tank using a camera. Launching, time and again Another unknown for in-orbit refueling: the number of launches it will take SpaceX and Blue Origin to fuel up vehicles for deep-space missions. SpaceX has shown launches can be conducted much more frequently than in the past, but rockets are still a long way from flying as easily as commercial jets. Meanwhile, Starship, the company's vehicle that will use orbital fueling, remains in an experimental phase and Blue Origin is still ramping up New Glenn. During a presentation earlier this year, a Blue Origin executive didn't specify how many refueling flights the company may need for a NASA mission that has it transporting astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the moon. For its NASA astronaut moon missions, SpaceX has been planning to conduct multiple launches of a tanker variant of its Starship spacecraft to fuel up a Starship depot in low-Earth orbit, according to NASA officials. Then the company would send a moon-lander Starship to the depot to take on fuel. After that, the lander would fly out to the moon. An executive at SpaceX early last year estimated a moon mission for NASA could take around 10 flights, while a different leader at the company last fall predicted around 16. Some current and former space-industry officials say the number of launches needed may be higher. One former NASA leader during a congressional hearing in February said as many as 20 could be required. A technical paper that has circulated among some industry officials and was viewed by The Wall Street Journal suggests it may take up to 40. Musk, during a recent presentation about SpaceX's plans for Mars, didn't discuss the number of flights that would be needed to send a Starship to the red planet. Staff at the company have talked about trying to send a basic, uncrewed ship out there next year with as few as three refueling flights, the Journal has reported. In a recent post on his social-media site X, Musk said a Starship flight to Mars in 2026 would be tough, giving it just a slight chance of happening. NEET UG 2025 round 1 begins in MP today: AIIMS-Bhopal falters at counselling's start
Bhopal: MP Directorate of Medical Education (DME), will begin allotting MBBS and BDS seats on Monday, Aug 18, as part of the NEET UG state level counseling. A total of 4,775 MBBS seats across 29 medical colleges—including 17 govt and 12 private institutions—will be distributed based on merit. There are about 588 MBBS seats in MP which will be filled through All India counseling that is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). Monday is the last day for All India Quota counseling candidates to report to their allotted colleges in Round one. In NEET UG 2025 Round 1 counseling, AIIMS-Bhopal opened at rank 148, a sharp drop from its 2024 opening rank of 79, despite recent efforts to position the institute as a leading medical destination in the country. When contacted, a public relations official at AIIMS-Bhopal stated, "I have to take a reply from administration regarding the same." However, no response was forthcoming in the next seven hours. The institute is awaiting the appointment of a new full-time director. AIIMS-Delhi maintained its unmatched status, opening at rank 1 and closing at 47, reflecting consistent top-tier demand. AIIMS-Jodhpur opened at 55, nearly 100 ranks ahead of Bhopal, while AIIMS Bhubaneswar (60), Rajkot (93), and Nagpur (136) also attracted higher opening ranks, signaling stronger early preference. Yet in closing ranks, AIIMS-Bhopal held firm at 524 (510 in 2024), ahead of Bhubaneswar (706), Rishikesh (685), Nagpur (862), and Rajkot (1997).
