The decades-old design trick that makes every EV logo look the same

BY Maybe you've noticed it while driving down the road. The chrome logos. The sleek sans serif fonts. It can be hard to tell one electric vehicle brand from another. There's a reason EV brands like Tesla, Rivian, BYD, Neta, Jaguar, and Zeekr have become a sea of sameness, and it all comes down to a single influence: Many of today's most technologically advanced cars owe their aesthetic to a decades-old vision of the future. Most EV brands use a font that includes cutouts, slashes, or entire missing segments. This is a font style called 'stenciling,' and if it looks inherently futuristic, that's because it's most often used in science fiction media. 'It's shorthand for the future,' says Stephen Coles, editorial director and associate curator at Letterform Archive in San Francisco, who also authors a blog called Chromeography about the history of car branding.

Additionally, Bloomberg's sources added that Tesla plans to increase its reliance on external technology partners, such as Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD) for compute and Samsung (SSNLF) for chip manufacturing. RIVIAN RESULTS: Rivian reported Q2 losses per share (97c) and Q2 revenue $1.303B, with consensus at (78c) and $1.29B, respectively. RJ Scaringe, Rivian Founder and CEO, said, 'This quarter we made significant progress in R2 development and testing. We also substantially completed the expansion of our Normal, Illinois facility and have begun installing manufacturing equipment in preparation for our start of production. Along with R2, our autonomy platform continues to be one of our major focus areas, and we're excited to share more of our roadmap later this year.' Rivian said it sees FY25 adjusted EBITDA of (2B) -($2.25B), FY25 vehicles delivered 40,000-46,000, and FY25 capital expenditures of $1.8B-$1.9B. The company is maintaining its 2025 delivery guidance range of 40,000 to 46,000. Because of some of the recent changes associated with regulatory credits and its second quarter performance, the company is increasing its guidance for adjusted EBITDA losses to ($2,000) million – ($2,250) million. LUCID RESULTS: Lucid Group (LCID) reported Q2 adjusted losses per share (24c), with consensus at (22c), and Q2 revenue of $259.4M, with consensus at $262.64M. Produced 3,863 vehicles in Q2. 'In Q1, we mentioned our ongoing partnership discussions to develop new revenue streams for our EV technology and beyond. The robotaxi partnership we announced with Uber and Nuro is a perfect example aligned with that strategy. We also continued to double down on increasing our brand awareness, introducing Timothee Chalamet, an award-winning actor and cultural icon, as our first global brand ambassador.' 'We delivered solid performance despite a challenging macroeconomic backdrop, thanks to the adaptability and focus of our team in navigating a dynamic environment,' said Taoufiq Boussaid, CFO at Lucid. 'We are focused on business fundamentals to achieve our near-term goals: disciplined cost management, brand building, and continuing to execute our Lucid Gravity launch ramp. We remain committed to strengthening our balance sheet and maintaining long-term alignment with partners and shareholders.' ACQUISITIONS: Archer (ACHR) announced two strategic acquisitions to accelerate the development of its next-generation defense aircraft. One of the acquisitions is of a patent portfolio and hiring of key talent from Overair, a spin-off of Karem Aircraft. Rivian's Developing New Tech To Make Its EVs More Agile

The latest car news, reviews, and features. While the automaker won't discuss future product, there's a job listing outlining what's on the roadmap posted publicly online right now. Tipped off by the crew at RivianForums , Rivian has a job listing for a Sr. Mechanical Design & Release Engineer specifically for steering systems. The job listing isn't the interesting bit, as Rivian's a startup and hiring people to develop its future products at a rapid rate. But listed in the job description are two interesting features not existing in today's R1T or R1S: steer-by-wire and rear-wheel steering. The former, which removes the mechanical connection between the steering system and the wheels, saves weight, saves money in production and materials, but adds development and engineering hurdles. The Tesla Cybertruck has steer-by-wire, among other things. Sr. Mechanical Design & Release Engineer, Steering job listing Rear-wheel steering would enable a Rivian to shrink its turning radius, which in turn would make the vehicle more agile in parking lots, around clover leaves, and take tighter turns off pavement as well. The feature, seen on the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and quite a few high-end luxury vehicles, would enable Rivian to make the larger R1T and R1S feel smaller than they are while driving. A Rivian spokesperson told The Drive , 'We cannot comment on any speculation about future protect.' Though, who's speculating? Rivian posted this in a public job posting for the world to see. The Rivian R1S and R1T were refreshed heavily, though they don't completely look like it, for 2025. The second-generation Quad arrived for 2026. It's unlikely rear-wheel steering or steer-by-wire will be integrated until the next refresh or heavy update, which likely will arrive around 2028. But it's quite possible steer-by-wire could be integrated into the upcoming $45,000 smaller R2, which arrives in 2026. Including steer-by-wire would lower the build cost, though increase development complexity. Either way, while unclear when these technologies will arrive in a Rivian, it's clear they are on the road map. If you're in the job market, have engineering chops and the record to prove it, Rivian might want to talk with you. Got a tip about future product via a job listing?
