I Spent 20 Days in Antarctica and Learned Epic Life Lessons—Here's How You Can, Too

I've traveled the globe as a luxury travel advisor, but after spending 20 days in Antarctica, crossing glaciers and sleeping under the midnight sun, I returned home with a host of profound realizations that are more valuable than any passport stamp. Here are five life lessons that I learned on the frozen continent—and how you can experience them for yourself.
A trip to Antarctica is the ultimate invitation to slow down. I went fully offline once I arrived, and only took photos with a proper camera. I was determined to truly see the sights in front of me: the shocking blue of an iceberg, a humpback whale breaching, even the quiet delight of a hot shower after sleeping on ice. I would suggest doing the same on your trip. Unplug, keep a journal, and celebrate little luxuries, like sipping champagne from crystal glasses on your final Zodiac boat ride. Research shows that the act of mindfully enjoying an experience amplifies our happiness. Exploring ice caves with White Desert Antarctica.

There's nothing like standing on the ice at a high-end camp, surrounded by thousands of miles of untouched wilderness. This vastness makes everyday stress feel trivial. Antarctica has been forming for over 35 million years, so your inbox can wait. Whether you fly in, cross the Drake Passage, or choose a hybrid route, just getting there shifts your perspective.
Part of my itinerary included a trip to South Georgia Island, where I stepped off the Zodiac boat into a world that didn't feel like mine. Penguins porpoised from the sea, the wind howled, and I had the distinct sense that I was the novelty the animals had come to see. At that moment, I was fully immersed—no past or future, just deep presence. That state, known as flow , brings a quiet joy that lingers long after a trip ends. To experience it, don't skip South Georgia. It's imbued with an emotional richness that you can't replicate. King penguins on South Georgia Island's Gold Harbor.A year after I sustained a major injury, I found myself flying to Antarctica from Cape Town for a mountaineering expedition. I was nervous, but I learned to use crampons, rappel, and cross glaciers safely. That experience rebuilt my sense of self-efficacy—the belief that we can do hard things. Since then, I've summited Grand Teton, earned a master's in positive psychology, and even transformed my business to focus on using travel as a path to well-being. If you're looking to push your own limits, White Desert's Echo Camp offers comfort and challenge in equal measure. A ship traversing the Drake Passage in Antarctica. In Antarctica, nature calls the shots and weather scrambles even the best plans. Living with uncertainty like this reminded me how little we control—and how that can ultimately feel liberating. This acceptance that you're not in control of everything is a powerful feeling to bring back to your day-to-day life, and career.
If you're looking for a journey that can transform you as much as it thrills you, Antarctica delivers. Approach it with intention and you'll leave with lessons that linger long after you've returned home.

One of the Best Resorts in Mexico Will Reopen This Fall After a Stunning Renovation

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal will reopen on October 1 after a multiyear, resort-wide renovation. The hotel, located on a prime stretch of beachfront in Cabo San Lucas, is currently closed for the update of its 112 guest rooms, suites, casitas, and villas, helmed by Paul Duesling Partners, the resort's original designer. The accommodations will be enhanced with a palette of light neutrals, custom furnishings crafted in Mexico, and an art collection highlighting local talent, including a mural by multidisciplinary artist Tanya Talamante. 'The reimagination of Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal was done thoughtfully to ensure a singularly authentic luxury experience that gives a nod to both the resort's impressive legacy as well as the heritage and traditions of Mexican culture,' said Maria Valeria Nowotny, vice president of operations for the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America at Hilton in a press release, shared with Travel + Leisure. The multiyear transformation started in 2022 with enhancements to the restaurants and culinary program. Since then, the hotel has added Agave Study at Peacock Alley, celebrating Mexico's agave spirit-making traditions, Neutral Coffee Lab, offering local and international coffee varieties, and Travesía, a nine-course taco tasting experience. Don Manuel's, the resort's signature restaurant, also underwent a glow-up and now serves an elevated take on traditional Mexican flavors, prepared with fresh local ingredients. Guests can still dine at the dramatic cliffside El Farallon, where the menu highlights the freshest catch of the day. For a beachfront al fresco lunch or an afternoon cocktail and snack, Crudo features ceviche, sushi, and oysters with an ocean view. The El Farallon cliffside restaurant. I'm a Travel Advisor Specializing in Trips to Nicaragua and Panama—Here Are My Favorite Itineraries

As a travel advisor with years of experience planning trips to Central America, it's my philosophy to embrace contrast and similarity between countries—whether that's culturally, geographically, or both. For example, one of my favorite journeys begins in Panama, transitions into Costa Rica's lush wilderness, and then shifts into the colonial architecture of Nicaragua. Another go-to itinerary kicks off with a visit to the ancient sites and luxury resorts of Belize before an exploration of the beautiful nature and towns of Guatemala. Here's an in-depth look at these two personal favorite routes. Volcan Baru in Chiriqui, Panama. Begin your trip in Panama City. Walk through the historic district of Casco Antiguo and explore the city's diverse culinary scene. Then head to Valle de Anton, a small, beautiful village inside of a volcanic crater before continuing northwest to the scenic highlands of Boquete where you'll find cloud forests, family-run coffee farms, and views of Volcan Baru. There are also plentiful ocean experiences on both sides of the country, whether you're interested in luxury resorts or amazing marine nature found at destinations like Coiba Island. Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. Cross into Costa Rica overland at Paso Canoas or via a short regional flight. Stay at a secluded eco-lodge in the Osa Peninsula, where howler monkeys and scarlet macaws function as your wake-up call. Then head further north into the misty trails of Monteverde, where you can spot hummingbirds, sip hot chocolate, and experience local gastronomy in a tree-top dining garden. Finally, visit the Nicoya Peninsula, one of only five 'Blues Zones' in the world, where people are believed to live longer than the global average. Cross into Nicaragua through the Peñas Blancas border and explore the Spanish colonial architecture of Granada. After this, head to Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America, for kayaking, boating, and paddle boarding around a massive body of water that's rich in biodiversity. If you're interested in more adventure, hike up Mombacho Volcano for panoramic views and jungle trails. Belize is known for its beautiful islands, but its mainland—with its Mayan ruins, archaeological sites like Caracol and Xunantunich, and underground caves at Actun Tunichil Muknal—is an underrated destination for historical adventures. Visit the indigenous Garifuna people to learn about their traditional cooking and famous drumming. And, of course, if you're looking for pure relaxation, Belize has plenty of barefoot luxury resorts and private island stays. Tikal National Park in Belize it only takes a short flight or a scenic ground transfer to reach the UNESCO world heritage site of Tikal in Guatemala. The majestic Lake Atitlán is surrounded by volcanoes, and the villages nestled around the lake each have their own personality. In San Juan La Laguna, meet the weavers keeping old traditions alive. Then spend a night or two in Antigua, walking the cobblestone streets and shopping for beautiful textiles and handmade jewelry and accessories. US teen influencer pilot accused of unauthorized Antarctic landing reaches deal to leave Chile

A judge in Chile has agreed to suspend proceedings against a teenage American pilot and social media influencer who has been stuck on a remote Antarctic island since late June after he was accused of landing there without permission. Ethan Guo was attempting to fly to all seven continents solo, raising funds for cancer research, when he landed on a part of Antarctica where the South American country maintains a territorial claim. Prosecutors accused him of providing false information to ground control about his landing point. On Monday, a judge approved an agreement between Guo's lawyers and prosecutors to suspend the proceedings on the condition that he donate $30,000 to a children's cancer foundation within 30 days. He must also leave the country and will be prohibited from reentering Chilean territory for three years. Chilean prosecutor Cristián Crisosto told CNN on Tuesday that if Guo does not meet the conditions, the agreement would become void and the court proceedings would continue. CNN is attempting to reach Guo for comment. Crisosto said Guo and his plane were still in Antarctic territory and that he would also have to pay the costs of 'aircraft security and personal maintenance.' In previous cases, he said, such costs have been roughly $600 a day. Guo has several options to leave the Antarctic, Crisosto added, including boarding a military ship or commercial plane. The next commercial flight is expected to take off from the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas in early October. Chilean authorities said that Guo had submitted a false flight plan and took off from Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport in Punta Arenas as the sole passenger and crew member aboard a Cessna 182Q aircraft, registered as N182WT, in late June. At one point during that flight, authorities say he turned off course toward Antarctica. Guo's lawyer has previously said that the young pilot experienced 'complications' while flying. 'While already in the air, he began to experience a series of complications,' Karina Ulloa said, adding that Guo claims 'that he was conducting an exploratory flight to see if he could follow this route or not.' Guo, whose website states he was trying to raise $1 million for cancer research by becoming 'the first person ever to fly to all seven continents solo,' had broadcast his continent-hopping journey since last September to more than a million Instagram followers.
