Strictly professional dancer Amy Dowden has thanked the "true real life heroes" who came to her aid after she contracted sepsis. On Instagram, the Caerphilly star thanked paramedics and spoke of the experience.
On her Instagram story, the Strictly Come Dancing dancer shared photos of her with paramedics on Wednesday, August 20. The photos were joined with a caption that read: "Two years ago today I got to thank the paramedics that saved my life! Noticed my sepsis signs and did all the could and more!
"Was so thankful and grateful to be able to thank you in person! I know my parents were so emotional too when they saw you again". For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter .
She continued: "True real life heroes!!! Unfortunately with chemotherapy the slightest cold / bug / infections can quickly turn to sepsis as you don't have the white blood cells to fight it". In another post on her Instagram story, Amy wrote: "Fast forward two years and I'm feeling healthier, stronger and happier than ever!
"Still go by these mottos. Don't get bitter get better. This too shall pass. And my old school days one, fail to prepare, prepare to fail".
The star has spoken openly about her health in recent years. The 35-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, and revealed that she contracted sepsis shortly after her first round of chemotherapy.

Amy says her memories were hazy of that time

In an Instagram post later that year, she spoke about the experience. She said: "I recently suffered a setback in my cancer treatment and spent several days in hospital and needing care by an ICU team."
She also gave the full story in an interview with Hello! Magazine. "I started having a temperature of 37.7 degrees Celsius," Amy shared during the interview.
"At the time I didn't realise that having a temperature of 37.5 or above could be fatal for a chemo patient. I just thought it was my reaction to chemo but, as it turned out, I had already got an infection."
Amy continued: 'I felt freezing cold but I was all clammy and shaking. My mum and dad rang my red card [which provides the chemotherapy team's contact details and current treatment information] and they said to hang up and ring the ambulance.
"I didn't want to go into hospital. at the time I didn't realise how ill I was. I knew it was a Saturday night, so A&E would probably be crowded, and it was dangerous being around people as it's more likely you'll pick up an infection.

"On chemo you don't have your white blood cells to fight infection. We now know I had the infection just before I started chemo but we were never able to pinpoint what actually caused it."
Amy then told the publication that her memory of her time in hospital was hazy, adding: "The doctors and nurses were telling me I had sepsis and that it was life-threatening but I wasn't taking it in. I didn't become properly aware until later. I told my dad: 'I've got sepsis' and he said: 'I know'."
Amy underwent an intensive chemotherapy and mastectomy in 2023. The star also shared her most vulnerable moments in that year with her BBC documentary, Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me, which followed Amy as she received treatment and raised awareness for breast cancer.
In February 2024, she received the uplifting news of 'no evidence of the disease', but the ballroom expert has been unwavering in her commitment to raising awareness of the disease ever since, providing regular heartfelt updates to her followers on social media.
This year, the star will be making a triumphant return to Strictly Come Dancing. Last year, the professional dancer was coupled up with JB Gill after returning to the show following her cancer treatment.
However, Amy had to pull out from the competition after sustaining an injury and was replaced by fellow professional dancer Lauren Oakley.
Luckily, Amy recovered and started 2025 with a dance tour around the UK titled Reborn alongside professional dancer and close friend, Carlos Gu, who will also be joining the Strictly series this year.
And furthermore, her documentary, Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me, has been nominated for a National Television Award in the authored documentary category shortlist. You can read more about her reaction to the nomination here.

Strictly Come Dancing star's real reason for quitting BBC show just a week into training
Strictly Come Dancing star Kristian Nairn has quit the BBC show just a week into training - as sources now reveal to us why he decided to leave the programme Kristian Nairn's real reason for quitting Strictly Come Dancing has been revealed after it was announced today that the actor and DJ had quit due to "unexpected medical reasons". The Game of Thrones actor and DJ was confirmed today to not be taking on the Latin and ballroom competition for an undisclosed health complaint. Kristian will be replaced by another celebrity, due to be announced later today. He said in a statement: 'With a heavy heart, I have to step back from this season of Strictly Come Dancing due to unexpected medical reasons. I was truly looking forward to the journey, and I'm deeply sorry to disappoint anyone who was looking forward to seeing me on the dance floor. Thank you all for your support, and I will be back on my feet very soon, in every sense. Love to all, Kristian." Sarah James, Executive Producer, BBC Studios, added in a statement: "We've absolutely loved getting to know Kristian in this short time, and he has all the makings of a brilliant Strictly Come Dancing contestant. We're incredibly sorry to lose him from this year's series and we all wish him a speedy recovery." Now, a source has revealed to The Mirror just why Kristian had quit the competition so early into training. A BBC source told us: "Kristian sadly just wasn't up to competing on Strictly and so he had to pull out. "The celebrities have not been paired up yet but he had a couple sessions doing the group number and they were a real shock to the system. I think by his own admission he found them a struggle and may have been surprised how much of a challenge it was physically for him. He wasn't feeling great and the best option for everyone was for him to leave the show at this stage. It has been a bit of a scramble but we have got a replacement." When he was announced for the show, Kristian said he was excited for the physical challenge. He said: This will be a huge challenge for me physically, but I'm ready to rise to it! It's a surreal and wonderful opportunity to shed one of my left feet!" The new celebrity joining Strictly Come Dancing will be announced on Thursday's (21.08.25) episode of The One Show. Strictly will return in just a few weeks time - with the celebrities and their professional dance partners being announced in a special launch show.

OnlyFans tennis star Sachia Vickery dumped out of US Open in just 72 minutes after sparking fury with sex-work confession
American tennis star Sachia Vickery's US Open hopes came to a crushing end Thursday, just one day after she went viral for her racy off-court endeavors. The 30-year-old, who sent shockwaves through the tennis world on Wednesday after she opened up on her OnlyFans career, came up against Ella Seidel in the second round of qualifying for the final Grand Slam of the year. However, Vickery, ranked world No 559, failed to secure her place in the main draw at Flushing Meadows after being beaten by the German in straight sets in just over an hour. World No. 105 Seidel made quick work of the matchup, cruising through the first set 6-1. Vickery attempted to fight back in the second but ultimately couldn't recover from having her serve broken in the first game, losing 6-2. Vickery caused a stir earlier this week when it emerged that she has carved out a successful side career, selling steamy photos of herself and charging men to date her. The athlete, who has 'God First' written in her Instagram bio, joined adult content side OnlyFans earlier this year, breaking the news to her stunned fans in a bombshell update on her Instagram. For $12.99 a month, subscribers have access to 'the content too spicy for Instagram,' according to Vickery's OnlyFans bio, which also describes her as 'your favorite pro tennis player.' Her platform teases her 'longest shower vid yet,' strip teases and 'spicier' pictures, while also asking her fans to rate her 'riding skills' as she shares risque videos and saucy snaps. Vickery has banked just over $2million throughout her 14-year career on the court. Outside of the sport, she demands a $1,000 deposit fee just to date her. 'I no longer date for free due to the behavior of men I now require a pre-date deposit send me 1,000 and we can make it happen my cashapp is $Sachiavick,' she told her 39,4000 followers during an Instagram Q&A session earlier this week. However, Vickery has faced harsh criticism from traditional tennis fans, who have brutally torn into her over the decision. 'Who the f*** is going to take Sachia Vickery on a date or even pay to take her on a date when she has let dudes see her naked for less than a price of a happy meal,' one post read. While Vickery's move may have sent ripples through the tennis world, she has no regrets. She previously revealed that she's always seen herself as something of a revolutionary. 'I've always pushed boundaries,' she said on the Black Spin Global podcast earlier this year. 'I've always been outspoken about racial hate I get online, bodyshaming. I'm very open about a lot of stuff. 'I'm still playing tennis, my career is still going but I also want to do things outside of tennis. I'm starting to explore more opportunities on social media.' Vickery, whose father Rawle is a former soccer player and brother Dominque Mitchell played football at South Carolina State, turned professional in 2011 after training with USTA and Mouratoglou Academy in France. But her career peaked back in 2018, when she managed a career-high ranking of World No 73. Now, the Florida native has slumped to No 559, without a single victory to her name. She also failed to qualify for the Australian Open in January, stumbling in the third round of qualifying, and skipped Roland Garros and Wimbledon all together.
