McEnroe-Marinas captains Oklahoma into NCAA Tournament

Yahoo14-05-2025
The road to Oklahoma City and the NCAA Softball Championship officially begins this week, and the Aloha State will be well represented.
Nine players from Hawaii high schools across eight collegiate programs are set to compete in the regional round of the NCAA Tournament. Among them, two standouts Maryknoll graduate Nelly McEnroe-Marinas and 'Iolani alum Ailana Agbayani are suiting up for top-ranked Oklahoma, the four-time defending national champions.
Oklahoma is the only school in the tournament featuring multiple players from Hawaii. And for McEnroe-Marinas, her redshirt freshman campaign has been nothing short of remarkable. After bouncing back from injury, she was named a team captain, an uncommon honor for an underclassman. She enters the postseason batting .345 with 14 home runs.
'It's a blessing,' McEnroe-Marinas said. 'I'm just so grateful for all the things that I went through and all the things that I've learned from the past captains. Just being able to soak all of that in is a huge honor. But definitely with this team, I'm not doing anything alone.'
Asked how her upbringing helped shape her leadership style, McEnroe-Marinas credited her island roots.
'The Hawaiian culture is unmatched. I think it's a big reason why I got picked to be a captain in the first place,' she said. 'Being able to grow up in that environment and bring that environment here to Oklahoma and spread the aloha. It's just amazing.'
Agbayani, a junior transfer from BYU, has made an immediate impact, batting .331 with 31 RBIs this season. Together, the duo brings island flair and culture to Norman, something McEnroe-Marinas says their teammates appreciate.
'In our BP sessions, we're the only ones vibing out to reggae,' she joked. 'I love having Ailana on this team. We never had the opportunity to be teammates growing up, and now we do, it's insane.'
In addition to the Sooners' duo, seven more Hawaii high school graduates are featured on tournament rosters:

NCAA Softball Tournament reportedly to seed 32 teams beginning with 2026 tournament

Following another exciting college softball season, the NCAA is doubling the number of teams it will seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. According to Softball America, softball will follow the format of college volleyball and women's soccer with the seeding of 32 teams. Only the top 16 seeds, which hosted the regional, were previously seeded. In theory, the committee is seeking to reward the top seeds with "easier" matchups. REQUIRED READING: Texas Longhorns power couple pushes each other in football, softball However, to protect teams from having to travel too much for regionals, the 1-32 seedings will not be straight up to protect 400-mile geographic proximity parameters and avoid same-conference matchups in the regionals. The No. 1-4 national seeds will play seeds Nos. 29-32; however, an adjustment will be made if it pairs two conference opponents who are scheduled to meet one another. There will not be a seeding for the rest of the 64-team field. Lions rookie edge rusher Hassanein out with pectoral injury

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions rookie edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein's status for the season may be in question after he sustained a pectoral injury in Saturday's preseason loss. Coach Dan Campbell said on Monday that Hassanein, the first Egyptian drafted into the NFL, will be down for 'a while.' Hassanein was selected in the sixth round to help shore up the edge rusher position. When asked whether Hassanein will return this season, Campbell said, 'Good question, I don't have that answer yet.'' Campbell said it's difficult for a rookie to lose time in training camp. 'You hate it for those guys, first because nobody feels worse than they do. He puts in the work and he wants it,'' Campbell said. 'It's tough when it's a young guy because you build so much of what you are — your foundation — in your first two years.'' Campbell appreciates that Hassanein was able to get in at least half of camp. 'The good news with that kid is he's a grinder. He will do everything it takes, you already know that — he'll do everything it takes to heal up, to rehab, to be back, he's going to stay in it mentally, learn what he can, process what he can. That's always going to give you a chance to be better when you come back," Campbell said. Safety Kerby Joseph (knee) was among others, who did not participate in Monday's practice. 'It's something he's been dealing with a little bit. He won't be out there today. We're hoping he's back late in the week. That's the hope right now,'' Campbell said. 'We don't feel it's a major problem, it's just something we're trying to manage right now and get it calmed down.'' Tight end Sam LaPorta has been out since Aug. 14 with an unspecified injury. He was on the sideline watching practice. Campbell had no update on safety Morice Norris, who was taken by ambulance off the field in Atlanta on Aug. 8. He remains in concussion protocol and it's to be determined if he will play this season. 'We're being very thorough with this. He's doing well, he's doing good right now. I don't want to go that far, I just know he's down today and we'll keep going,'' Campbell said. "Hopefully, by the end of the week we can get him worked into a few things," Campbell said. 'I don't know if he'll play (Saturday) or not, but this is a step in the right direction.' The Lions face the Houston Texans in a joint practice on Thursday. The teams meet Saturday at Ford Field to close out the preseason.

If the Red Sox want to maximize their roster, why is reliever Isaiah Campbell still on the team?

'We'll maximize the roster,' manager Alex Cora said. Then why stop at two changes? The Sox also could have optioned righthanded reliever Isaiah Campbell back to Worcester and recalled Brennan Bernardino, Cooper Criswell, Richard Fitts, or Zack Kelly. Campbell has appeared in 14 games for the Red Sox the last two seasons and allowed 18 earned runs on 27 hits over 14 innings. Advertisement He inherited a 7-2 lead against Miami on Saturday and allowed three runs with two outs. That forced Cora to bring in closer Aroldis Chapman to finish the game. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The Sox should have demoted Campbell after the game, if only to drive home the point that every out counts in a pennant race. Because Chapman had worked two games in a row, he wasn't available for the ninth inning on Sunday and the Sox allowed three runs in the ninth to lose the game. Cora was asked what was being gained by having Campbell on the roster. 'We always talk about how we are we going to attack this week pitching-wise and with the guys that we have right now, we feel comfortable,' he said. Advertisement 'We're in the winning business, right?' Cora said Campbell was one pitch away from getting out of that jam. He also downplayed the idea that the Triple A pitchers would make a difference. 'There's some guys down there, they're throwing the ball well,' he said. 'Others, the numbers look great, but they're not where they're supposed to be.' If the Sox are in the winning business, Bernardino, Criswell, Fitts, and Kelly have helped them win before. Campbell has not shown that yet. That Abraham Toro remains on the roster also is curious. He went into last night's game against the Orioles having hit .189 with a .538 OPS since the All-Star break. Toro has been a below-average defender at first base, too. A switch hitter who can play first base and third base is theoretically valuable. But with Lowe now on the roster the Sox can use him at first base against righthanders and Romy Gonzalez against lefthanders. That should give the Red Sox an upgrade over the Toro/Gonzalez platoon they have been using. Cora acknowledged that Toro's statistics are lagging. 'But it's a good at-bat,' he said. 'A guy that we trust. We can mix and match throughout the games. We feel comfortable where we're at.' Dropping Toro off the roster would create an opportunity for Kristian Campbell or David Hamilton. Perhaps the Sox want Campbell to finish off his development this time and aren't ready to bring him back to the majors. Hamilton would at least give them a pinch runner who could make a difference in the late innings of a close game. Advertisement Jordan Hicks has pitched poorly since joining the Sox, putting 25 batters on base over 13 innings via hit, walk or hit by pitch. He's not shown he can be trusted in a high-leverage situation. But Hicks is out of options and is talented enough for the Red Sox to keep under control to see what he could be with some tweaks. But if the idea is to maximize the roster, then maximize the roster as much as possible. The Sox hold one of the Wild Card spots in the American League but there are still 36 games left to play. Every game is important and having even two spots on the roster that could be better used are too many. The Sox owe that much to the fans and the players who have gotten them this far.
