A new study has ranked the U.S. states with the best community college systems, highlighting where prospective students can get a quality education at a lower cost than going to university.
The WalletHub analysis named Maryland as the nation's best location for its community college offering, with five institutions ranking in the top 40 schools nationwide.
Also featuring high on the list were New Mexico and Wisconsin, while Ohio and Alabama ranked at the bottom.
The study compared more than 650 community colleges across 18 indicators, including the cost of in-state tuition and fees, student-faculty ratio, and graduation rate. The college named overall best in the study was the State Technical College of Missouri.
Why It Matters
Americans owe almost $2 trillion in student loan debt, with the four-year estimated attendance cost at the top five most expensive colleges topping $385,000. Those large debts can affect graduates' ability to start families, get on the property ladder and find financial stability.
Conversely, community colleges offer students an opportunity to get a higher education without the same financial strain. According to WalletHub, tuition and fees for full-time in-state enrollment at a public two-year college averaged $4,050 a year. Undergraduate students studying at community colleges can also earn academic credit toward a bachelor's degree, helping to lower the overall cost.
What To Know
WalletHub's analysis is based on a sample of 653 schools from the list of member institutions in the American Association of Community Colleges.
Schools were evaluated on a 100-point scale across three key dimensions—cost and financing, education outcomes and career outcomes—and 18 metrics in total.
The state-by-state analysis was calculated on a weighted average of the scores earned by the community colleges in each state. Only states with at least two community colleges present in the data sample were included in the results.
The top five community colleges were State Technical College of Missouri; Manhattan Area Technical College and Pratt Community College, both in Kansas; and Woodland Community College and De Anza College, both in California.
On a state level, Maryland was highlighted for offering free community college education. Its top community college was Montgomery College, which ranked 17th nationally. The college has several campuses in Montgomery County, and according to WalletHub, it stands out for its high median salaries for graduates and good student retention rates. It also offers credit for life experiences.
Both Maryland and second-placed New Mexico had five community colleges within the top 40 schools nationally. New Mexico's best-ranked college, Santa Fe Community College, ranked seventh nationally and was credited for having a high ratio of faculty to students.
Wisconsin, in third place, was praised for offering employment services for students and preparing them well to advance to higher education.
What People Are Saying
Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, said in the report: "A good community college minimizes costs for students while also providing an enriching learning experience that leads to high student retention and high graduation rates.
"The best colleges also help their students even post-graduation by offering employment services to help them find jobs with good salaries. Finally, many of the best community colleges realize school isn't the only place people learn, so they offer credit for life experiences."

U.S. Financial Confidence Continues to Drop: New Data from the Mutual of Omaha Protection Index Report Underscores Taking Timely Action to Proof the Futures of Americans

OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With the goal to empower Americans to protect what matters the most and achieve their financial goals, Mutual of Omaha reveals the findings from its Protection Index Report, to mark National Financial Awareness Day today. The proprietary research study*, which highlights a critical need to address both short-term concerns and long-term financial confidence, reinforces Mutual of Omaha's commitment to clear, approachable advice that helps Americans better understand and protect their financial well-being. 'We know financial planning can get overwhelming, especially when we try to juggle today's priorities with tomorrow's goals,' said Jennifer Wulf, Vice President, Consumer Insights and Marketing Strategy for Mutual of Omaha. 'That belief is at the core of the Protection Index Report. We want to understand the minds of today's American consumer, to meet them where they are and deliver advice and solutions that address their needs.' Most Americans Say They are Not Ready for the Future Despite some generational optimism about the future, overall confidence in financial protection is declining, particularly among the most vulnerable: Only 23% of Americans currently feel financially protected, down from 24% in 2023. 17% feel their protection is threatened, up from 13% just two years ago. Many respondents cite difficulty saving, lack of clear strategies, and rising costs as obstacles. Gen Z Feels Good About the Future, Boomers are More Hesitant Among the generations, 87% of consumers overall, and 92% of Boomers, say they feel a responsibility to protect their family's financial future. Particularly, consumers cited life insurance, burial policies and savings for their children as the top protection priorities. Gen Z, the second youngest generation born between 1996-2010, is at the very beginning of their careers and early stages of adulthood. Despite low current confidence likely due to this, the study found that Gen Zers expressed the highest optimism about being financially prepared in 10 years. Gen Z is also significantly more likely to say they haven't even started thinking about their financial future, despite feeling more confident compared to other generations when asked about their retirement savings and future. Millennials and Gen X fall between, with younger Millennials often struggling with debt and older Gen Xers beginning to prioritize retirement. 'We found that Gen Z's optimism stands in stark contrast to other generations. While we can speculate whether it's the promise of long careers ahead of them or the anticipation of the Great Wealth Transfer, one thing is certain, their confidence is real. And, that's encouraging,' said Nate Hobson, Mutual of Omaha National Advisor Sales Director. 'For generations, Mutual of Omaha has been a trusted partner for every stage of life. While we remain committed to helping all generations protect their finances, we have an exciting opportunity to help Gen Z turn their optimism into action.' The Gap Between Hope and Belief Is Wide 60% of respondents want to believe they'd avoid financial crisis if seriously ill or injured, but only 49% believe that's true. The gap is especially wide among women and lower-income respondents, both of whom report lower belief in crisis readiness. Respondents named inflation, medical costs, and the high cost of insurance as key obstacles. As a Millennial woman herself, Sarah Whitmore, Mutual of Omaha Financial Advisor added, 'Financial protection is more than the product offerings, it's about confidence. Whether Gen Z or a Boomer, our goal is to support all Americans, including women who are more likely to express concerns about debt, savings, and future security, by arming them with the right advice and resources to feel protected.' Social Security is 90 years old. We are making it smarter, better, faster under Trump

President Donald Trump has pledged to protect and preserve Social Security, and I am honored to lead the agency as Commissioner at such a pivotal moment. My vision is straightforward: a Social Security Administration that is easier to access, faster to respond, and better prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow. That vision is rooted in our commitment to public service and grounded in the belief that government can and should work for everyone. Since taking office, I have focused on modernizing operations; investing in our workforce; eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse; and improving how we serve the public, whether online, over the phone, or in person. Social Security is not a program of the past; it is a promise to future generations. We have expanded our digital tools to provide more services from the convenience of people's homes. We have taken steps to reduce wait times, enhance security, and make it easier to navigate our programs. All the while ensuring we pay benefits accurately to those who are eligible to receive them. We have also added support and removed roadblocks for our frontline employees with updated tools, technology, and processes, so they can deliver efficient, accurate, and compassionate service to the American people every day. In my first 100 days as Commissioner, SSA has made significant progress, improving customer experience: reducing the average wait time on the national 800 number from 30 minutes last year to single digits last month; implementing new phone systems to enable 90% of calls to be handled via self-service or convenient callbacks; shortening field office wait times by 30%; eliminating 29 hours of weekly downtime for my Social Security to allow 24/7 online management of benefits; decreasing Disability hearing wait times by 60 days, reaching historic lows; and, sending over 3.1 million payments totaling $17 billion to eligible beneficiaries five months ahead of schedule under the Social Security Fairness Act. Under President Trump's leadership, I have charted a new course that strengthens service delivery and secures the integrity and efficiency of our systems. We are modernizing the underlying infrastructure that supports our work so that the agency is not only keeping up with the pace of change but leading the way in service innovation. As we celebrate this 90th anniversary, we must also keep our eyes firmly on the future. Social Security is not a program of the past; it is a promise to future generations. Young Americans entering the workforce today deserve the same sense of security their parents and grandparents had. Maintaining that trust will require thoughtful innovation and a shared commitment to protecting the integrity and solvency of the program. Trump admin unveils groundbreaking tool 'supercharging' gov't efficiency to 'win the race' for AI dominance

FIRST ON FOX: The Trump administration is announcing the launch of a new tool it says will be instrumental in enabling agencies across the federal government to efficiently implement artificial intelligence at scale and take a major step forward rolling out the president's "AI Action Plan." Trump's U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) said on Thursday it has launched USAi, a tool the agency describes as a "secure generative artificial intelligence evaluation suite that enables federal agencies to experiment with and adopt artificial intelligence at scale—faster, safer, and at no cost to them." The agency says that the platform, available starting Thursday at 10 a.m. through gives government users access to "powerful" tools like chat-based AI, code generation and document summarization with the goal of "supercharging employee productivity." "USAi isn't just another tool, it's infrastructure for America's AI future," GSA Chief Information Officer David Shive explained. "USAi helps the government cut costs, improve efficiency, and deliver better services to the public, while maintaining the trust and security the American people expect." GSA Deputy Administrator Stephen Ehikian told Fox News Digital that this latest application is an "on ramp" to A.I. that will be the "tip of the spear" on the A.I. front similar to the way GSA previously implemented the cloud. The Trump administration rolled ut its A.I. Action Plan in July after Trump ordered the federal government in January to develop a plan of action for artificial intelligence in order to "solidify our position as the global leader in AI and secure a brighter future for all Americans." Trump has made U.S. A.I. growth a cornerstone of his administration, such as notching multi-billion deals with high-tech firms such as Oracle and OpenAI for the Stargate project, which is an effort to launch large data centers in the U.S, as well as a $90 billion energy and tech investment deal specifically for the state of Pennsylvania to make it the U.S. hub for AI. "USAi means more than access—it's about delivering a competitive advantage to the American people," GSA Deputy Administrator Stephen Ehikian said in press release. "The launch of USAi shows how GSA is translating President Trump's AI strategy into action and accelerating AI adoption across government. USAi will put mission-ready tools directly into the hands of agencies to modernize faster, boost security, and lead globally." The A.I. Action Plan includes a three-pillar approach focused on American workers, free speech and protecting U.S.-built technologies. "We want to center America's workers, and make sure they benefit from AI," A.I. and crypto czar David Sacks told the media in July when details of the A.I. plan were made public. "The second is that we believe that AI systems should be free of ideological bias and not be designed to pursue socially engineered agendas," Sacks said. "And so we have a number of proposals there on how to make sure that AI remains truth-seeking and trustworthy. And then the third principle that cuts across the pillars is that we believe we have to prevent our advanced technologies from being misused or stolen by malicious actors. And we also have to monitor for emerging and unforeseen risks from AI." Advancing the federal government's use of A.I. and expanding employee access are core to the GSA's efforts to fulfill Trump's directive to preserve U.S. leadership in the global technology race, GSA Commissioner Josh Gruenbaum explained to Fox Digital in an interview earlier this month. "As we kind of examined the President's AI action plan, heard the call to action of, 'Hey, this is a race, and we are going to win this race.' From our perspective, all that meant, synonymously, was widespread adoption," he told Fox Digital of delivering AI to federal employees. The rollout of the USAi tool follows GSA announcing earlier in August that OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise is now available to all federal agencies to incorporate into their workflow at $1 per agency. The deal with OpenAI, the tech company behind ChatGPT, is part of GSA's OneGov Strategy that aims to modernize "how the federal government purchases goods and services" under the Trump administration. GSA also notched another deal with A.I. company Anthropic this month providing all three branches of government access to large language model Claude. Gruenbaum told Fox News Digital that Thursday's announcement will be critical for agencies for creating efficiencies to help turn the federal workforce into "the most nimble, smart, efficient, agile, and agentically tech-forward workforce out there so that this country can continue to compete and win the AI race."
