Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that with a growing number of industries requiring semiconductors as key components, ASEAN is at a pivotal moment in history where it has not just the capacity, but also the strategic neutrality, to strengthen its positioning as the world's leading hub for semiconductors.
'I am confident ASEMIS 2025 will forge greater cooperation between the public and private sector which will enhance the already strong growth momentum of the semiconductor industry across the region,' he said in a statement today.

KUALA LUMPUR: Infineon Technologies' mega investment has not only positioned Malaysia as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub but will also generate 1,500 high-income jobs for Malaysians, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced Infineon's RM30 billion potential investment during a trade and investment mission to Germany, following a meeting with the company's top management. "That potential has now become a reality. Infineon Technologies, the German semiconductor giant, has commenced an additional RM30 billion investment to build the world's largest 200mm Silicon Carbide (SiC) Power Fab at the Kulim Hi-Tech Industrial Park in Kedah. "The first phase of the plant has not only been completed, it is already operational. The launch of this facility reflects the state government's recognition of the federal government's efforts in attracting further investment to Kedah," he said in a post on X. He added that Infineon's commitment also extends to supporting local small and medium enterprises through its local vendor development programme, launched on Jan 15, 2025, which has benefited 139 local companies. "This is a highly significant investment and a clear sign of Infineon's confidence in Malaysia. From potential, we have made it a reality," added Tengku Zafrul.

SST Exemption For Residential Projects, Public Facilities
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The government continues to support the construction sector by granting Sales and Services Tax (SST) exemptions for selected projects, particularly those involving residential buildings and public facilities, including houses of worship, recreational parks and public toilets, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. He said essential building materials such as cement, aggregate (gravel) and sand remain zero-rated under the sales tax to help reduce the burden on developers and ensure the continuity of infrastructure projects. 'Selected business-to-business (B2B) activities are subject to certain conditions. For instance, main contractors are subject to SST, but not to subcontractors earning below the threshold of RM1.5 million,' he said during an oral question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today. Ahmad was responding to a question from Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) regarding the categories of construction projects exempted from SST, as well as the ministry's steps to ensure that existing projects are not affected by its implementation. In line with the government's commitment to implement SST fairly and effectively, he said, companies and contractors that carry out contracts that do not allow for review will be granted a one-year exemption, subject to terms and conditions. 'This incentive is part of the government's measures to ensure the construction industry has sufficient time to adjust the system, streamline the registration process and obtain accurate clarification on the implementation of SST," he said. Meanwhile, Ahmad said that there has been no discussion to increase the threshold value for registration of taxable services for the construction sector from RM1.5 million to RM3 million. He was responding to a supplementary question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) regarding the industry's proposal for the threshold value for registration of SST taxable services to be increased from RM1.5 million to RM3 million, particularly for construction and rental and leasing categories -- BERNAMA

Police Receive Four Reports Over Rally At Dataran Merdeka
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Police have received four reports in connection with the rally at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday, including one case involving an effigy resembling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim being caned near the National Mosque. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the remaining three reports were related to the use of drones. He said that the effigy case has been referred to the Classified Crime Investigation Unit in Bukit Aman for investigation under Section 41 of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
