British Embassy marks Women's Day, launches Women's Diwaniya
KUWAIT: The British Embassy hosted its inaugural 'Women's Diwaniya' on Sunday, May 18, bringing together female leaders from many different sectors to mark Kuwaiti Women's Day on Friday, May 16. This new initiative - which is set to run on a quarterly basis, reflects the Embassy's ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships with female leaders and creating dedicated spaces where they can network and discuss key issues.
The decision to launch a Women's Diwaniya follows the success of the Women in Business-themed Ghabga the Embassy hosted during Ramadan - and builds on broader efforts to support and empower women and girls through initiatives such as its 'Future Female Leaders in Sport' program, run in collaboration with the UK's 'Safeguarding Alliance' and Kuwait's Public Authority for Sport.
Speaking at the event, Belinda Lewis, British Ambassador to Kuwait, said: 'Kuwaiti Women's Day offers a moment to celebrate the incredible achievements of women here, both past and present, and to inspire the next generation of female leaders. It is also a chance to reflect on the shared and different challenges faced by women across the world, the progress made and barriers still to be dismantled. I am proud that the British Embassy team has hosted this evening's Women's Diwaniya, where female leaders from many different sectors can connect, collaborate and support one another.'

Kuwait Women's Sports Committee focuses on advancing athletes in regional competitions
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 26: The Women's Sports Committee of the Kuwait Olympic Committee held its regular meeting with the bodies and federations at the committee's headquarters in Hawalli, in the presence of the head of the Women's Sports Committee, Fatima Hayat, and members of the committee, Sheikha Bibi Al-Salem and Rabaa Al-Hajri, and the heads of the women's committees in all federations. The attendees discussed the achievements and activities of women's sports in Kuwait during the past four years, and the report of the Women's Sports Committee on the most important obstacles to women's activity and the proposed solutions, in addition to the reports of the women's committees on the 2023-2024 sports season and the next season. Hayat said, "Women's sports have become a tangible reality in Kuwait. It came after years of work, during which many achievements were achieved, which puts us in front of new challenges, perhaps the most important of which is taking women's sports to an advanced stage of development, and this requires more cooperation and work from various parties, to reach the competition for advanced positions regionally and Asia." Secretary of the Squash Federation and Head of the Women's Committee, Hamed Al-Omran, said, "We discussed the necessity of approving partial professionalism for female players by the laws and regulations of the General Sports Authority, and we received reassuring promises in this regard. We demanded the necessity of including women's competitions in the General Excellence Cup and providing an independent budget for the technical teams for women's sports. We hope that all the proposals will be translated into a tangible reality in the coming period; to develop women's sports." In addition, the Head of the Women's Sports Committee at the Handball Federation, Dr. Al-Jazzy Al-Munes, confirmed that the most prominent obstacle hindering the progress of women's sports is the lack of sufficient sports facilities for the player to practice her favorite sport.
