Bengaluru South taluks to receive permanent drinking water supply by December: DK Shivakumar
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has announced that the permanent drinking water supply project for taluks in Bengaluru South district will be completed by December this year.
According to news agency PTI, the project, which is being implemented at a cost of ₹540 crores, aims to provide reliable drinking water to the region, a promise made during the Chennapatna by-polls.
Shivakumar highlighted that the project will benefit areas including Ramanagar, Kanakapura, Chennapatna, and Magadi taluks. The Deputy Chief Minister also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the project near the Sattegala reservoir, the report added.

"We made a commitment to supply drinking water to all the taluks in Bengaluru South, and we are determined to keep that promise," said Shivakumar.
The project was initially launched during his tenure as Water Resources Minister, and he expressed concerns about delays. The Deputy Chief Minister enquired with officials and Megha Engineering, the Hyderabad-based firm executing the project, regarding the reasons for the holdup.
The project aims to supply 3.3 TMCft of water at a nominal cost. It is expected to benefit approximately 10.82 lakh people and 9.03 lakh cattle in the region, which has faced recurring water scarcity due to insufficient rainfall in recent years. Shivakumar also clarified that land for the project is being acquired from farmers as needed, with fair compensation provided. "We are ensuring that farmers who are cooperating with the project by giving up their land receive adequate compensation," he said.
This initiative is designed to improve the area's groundwater levels and alleviate the ongoing water scarcity. Water will be transported from the Sattegala reservoir to the Iggalur barrage via gravity, with 220 cusecs of water flowing for 180 days. The project includes a 25.4 km pipeline, of which 5.5 km has already been completed. Additionally, 11.33 km of the 12.05 km tunnel, which is part of the infrastructure to deliver water, has also been completed.
Water will eventually be supplied to several key reservoirs in the area, including Kanva, Manchanbele, and YG Gudda, through a lift irrigation system.
Shivakumar, along with former MP DK Suresh, MLAs CP Yogeshwar and Kadalur Uday, and MLCs S Ravi and Sudham Das, also reviewed the ongoing tunnel work as part of the project's progress.

Espionage case: Punjab YouTuber Jasbir's police remand extended by 2 days
A Mohali court on Saturday extended for two days the police remand of Punjab-based YouTuber Jasbir Singh, who was arrested on espionage charges on June 4. Jasbir Singh, 41, was produced in the court after his three-day police remand ended on Saturday. Police sought a seven-day remand, but the court granted them two days, his counsel said. Jasbir Singh was in touch with influencer Jyoti Malhotra, who is in custody on charges of spying for Pakistan, and after his arrest, the police had said that it had unearthed a terror-backed espionage network linking him to Pakistani intelligence and army officials. 'Haryana Police had summoned Jasbir Singh on June 6 in the Jyoti Malhotra espionage case but before he could join the investigation, he was arrested by Punjab Police', Jasbir Singh's counsel Mohit Dhupar claimed on Saturday. He also denied the charge that Singh was an agent of Pakistan's spy agency ISI. Jasbir alias Jaan Mahal, a resident of Mahlan village in Rupnagar district, was running a YouTube channel 'JaanMahal Video' with over 11 lakh subscribers, ostensibly posting travel and cooking vlogs. After Singh's arrest, Punjab police had claimed that it unearthed a 'terror-backed espionage network' linking him to Pakistani intelligence and army officials. Police had said that the YouTuber was allegedly spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Dhupar said he met him in the court on Saturday. 'We spoke to him. There is no such thing that is being said in the media that he was an ISI agent,' said Dhupar, claiming he was just a vlogger. Dhupar said Singh was summoned by Punjab Police from May 17 till May 30. He had already given his mobile phone and laptop to the police, said the counsel. Dhupar said on June 2, Hisar police summoned Singh to join the investigation in the Jyoti Malhotra case on June 6. When Punjab Police came to know about him being summoned by the Haryana police, Singh was asked to appear on June 3 and he was arrested on June 4, said the counsel. Hisar native Malhotra (33) who was running a YouTube channel 'Travel with JO' was arrested last month. On May 13, India expelled Danish, who was posted at the Pakistan High Commission, for allegedly indulging in espionage. Jasbir was allegedly found to be associated with a Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO). He was in contact with a Pakistan high commission official who was recently expelled from New Delhi on charges of spying and had met Pakistan Army officials during one of his three visits to the neighbouring country, police had earlier said. He was allegedly in close contact with Jyoti Malhotra and was also associated with PIO Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa, cops said. The accused had also travelled to Pakistan on three occasions including in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and came into direct contact with ISI officers, who subsequently cultivated and recruited him to carry out espionage activities within India, police had said. Investigations revealed that Singh attended the Pakistan National Day event in Delhi on Danish's invitation, where he met Pakistani Army officials and vloggers. After Jyoti Malhotra's arrest, accused Singh had attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection, police had said.

"Stadium left unattended, no police protection": Karnataka BJP on Bengaluru stampede
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 8 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Karnataka mounted an attack on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, days after 11 people died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru. Karnataka Deputy Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Arvind Bellad alleged that the duo wanted to 'take selfies' and 'celebrate' the victory with RCB players. 'After this big tragedy in Karnataka, more than 30 common citizens were injured, and 11 people lost their lives. The chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and the deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, are two culprits... Because they wanted to take selfies and wanted to celebrate the victory with the RCB players, the whole attention of the police and the officers was on them. They were busy giving protection to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, whereas the crowd gathered at the Stadium was left unattended... There was no police protection. All the police officers were busy protecting the chief minister and their family... Siddaramaiah should resign,' Bellad said. Senior BJP leader CT Ravi also called to fix the responsibility. '11 people died--speaking the truth about it, is that politics? Did we go eat dosa after hearing about the deaths? Who is responsible? Did we call everyone to Vidhana Soudha and felicitate them? Does RCB represent the state or Kannadigas? The CM and Deputy CM are responsible. Your political credit war caused this...' Ravi stated. Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah has ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede ahead of RCB team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Delhi govt to set up transgender welfare board
The Delhi government on Saturday announced the establishment of a 'Transgender Welfare and Empowerment Board' in a first-of-its-kind initiative to ensure the dignity, rights, and opportunities for the transgender community in the Capital. Chief minister Rekha Gupta described the move as a reflection of inclusive governance in Delhi and asserted that the government is taking practical steps to uplift marginalised communities, the Delhi chief minister's office said in a statement. 'This is not merely a legal procedure, but a symbol of our unwavering commitment to ensure dignity, rights, and opportunities to the transgender community. This is a practical and powerful step towards building an empowered and 'Viksit Delhi'. Our government is committed to ensuring equal rights for all. The board will work on policy making, recommending welfare schemes, coordinating with various departments, and resolving grievances of the transgender community. It will also ensure timely issuance of identity certificates and ID cards. Now, transgender individuals will be able to self-declare their gender identity and obtain identity documents from the district magistrate,' the chief minister said. According to Delhi government officials, the board will be entrusted with key responsibilities, including policy formulation, recommendation of welfare schemes, coordination among departments, and grievance redressal for transgender persons. It will also play a vital role in ensuring the timely issuance of identity certificates and ID cards, enabling transgender individuals to self-declare their gender identity and obtain official documentation from their respective District Magistrates without bureaucratic hurdles. The government will roll out several supportive measures targeted specifically at the transgender community such as construction of third-gender toilets in government buildings, dedicated hospital wards and gender-specific healthcare services in government-run hospitals, ensuring that medical care is inclusive and sensitive, a transparent and online process for the issuance of transgender identity cards to reduce delays and promote accessibility, sensitisation and awareness campaigns across schools, colleges, and workplaces to address stigma and promote social acceptance; and employment training programmes, temporary shelters, and social security schemes tailored to the needs of the transgender population. The move has been hailed by activists and civil society organisations. 'This is a revolutionary step,' said a spokesperson from a Delhi-based LGBTQ+ rights organisation. 'It sets a precedent for other states to follow and shows that Delhi is serious about equality, not just in words but in action,' the spokesperson said.
