[UPDATED] GRS wants to continue PH ties, but insists on leading role for Sabah polls

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) wants to maintain its cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH), but insists that the Sabah-based coalition must lead the alliance to face the upcoming Sabah election.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the continuity in the cooperation is in line with the strong support from Sabah PH when GRS was facing an attempt to topple the state government, known as the Kinabalu Move, in January 2023.
"Since then, the strong GRS-PH cooperation, which has clearly brought stability and progress to the state, will continue to be maintained as a genuine partnership, one that is believed to bring many benefits and positive outcomes to the people in Sabah.
"Thank you to the Sabah PH leaders from all of us in GRS," the GRS chairman said in his closing speech for the Parti Gagasan Rakyat (Gagasan Rakyat) annual general assembly at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.
Present were GRS' party component presidents, including Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee of Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), LDP's Datuk Chin Su Phin, United Sabah National Organisation's (USNO) Tan Sri Pandikar Amin, and PCS's Tan Sri Anifah Aman.
Sabah PH leaders were Datuk Ewon Benedick (Sabah PH chief and Upko president), Datuk Mustapha Sakmud (Parti Keadilan Rakyat's chairman), Datuk Phoong Jin Tze (Democratic Action Party's chairman), and Lahirul Latigu (Sabah Amanah chairman).
Former chief minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan also attended the event.
Hajiji, who is also Gagasan Rakyat president, also stressed the importance of GRS as a strong coalition of local parties in fulfilling the aspirations of Sabahans who want to see local parties dominate state politics.
"When I attended the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS)-Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) event, I felt a burning spirit among party members. Both parties have their strengths and contribute greatly to GRS.
"It is no exaggeration to say that PBS and STAR are the backbone of GRS. They are comrades-in-arms, always standing by our side, offering support and wise counsel in their roles as GRS members.
"SAPP, USNO, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and Party Cinta Sabah (PCS), all these parties play a role in uniting and strengthening us.
"Let us continue to strengthen our unity so that local parties may stand as one. Truly, the strength within GRS is the key to winning big in the upcoming election," he said.

Trump says Nvidia to give US cut of China chip sales

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed reports that semiconductor giant Nvidia would pay the United States 15 percent of its revenues from sales of certain artificial intelligence chips to China. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump argued that Nvidia's 'H20' chips are 'obsolete,' despite previously being targeted for export restrictions. He said that to lift the restrictions, he had agreed to a 15-percent cut from Nvidia: 'If I'm going to do that, I want you to pay us as a country something, because I'm giving you a release. I released them only from the H20.' The California-based company produces some of the world's most advanced semiconductors but cannot ship its most cutting-edge chips to China due to concerns that Beijing could use them to enhance military capabilities. Nvidia developed the H20 — a less powerful version of its AI processing units — specifically for export to China. That plan stalled when the Trump administration tightened export licensing requirements in April. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with Trump at the White House last week and agreed to give the federal government the cut from its revenues, a highly unusual arrangement in the international tech trade, according to reports in the Financial Times, Bloomberg and New York Times. 'While we haven't shipped H20 to China for months, we hope export control rules will let America compete in China and worldwide,' a Nvidia spokesperson told AFP. The company spokesperson added: 'America cannot repeat 5G and lose telecommunication leadership. America's AI tech stack can be the world's standard if we race.' Investors are betting that AI will transform the global economy, and last month Nvidia — the world's most valuable company and a leading designer of high-end AI chips — became the first company ever to hit $4 trillion in market value. The firm has, however, become entangled in trade tensions between China and the United States, which are waging a heated battle for dominance to produce the chips that power AI. The United States has been restricting which chips Nvidia can export to China on national security grounds. After Huang's meeting with Trump, the Commerce Department on Friday started granting the licenses for chip sales, according to media reports. Silicon Valley-based AMD will also pay 15 percent of revenue on Chinese sales of its MI308 chips, which it was previously barred from exporting to the country. AMD did not respond to requests for comment. The move comes as the Trump administration has been imposing stiff tariffs, with goals varying from addressing US trade imbalances, wanting to reshore manufacturing, and pressuring foreign governments to change policies. A 100 percent tariff on many semiconductor imports came into effect last week, with exceptions for tech companies that announce major investments in the United States. 'It's a political tariff in everything but name, brokered in the shadow of heightened US-China tech tensions,' Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said. –AFP

Bung denies being at odds with Zahid over Sabah polls

Bung Moktar Radin said Sabah Umno and BN are fully prepared for the upcoming state election. PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin has denied being at odds with Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on the issue of cooperation for the upcoming state election. Bung said Umno at the federal level and Sabah Umno 'remain as one'. 'We are on the same page. Cooperation can still happen after the election,' he told FMT. Zahid was reported as saying yesterday that negotiations on seat allocations for the polls among BN, Pakatan Harapan and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah are almost completed. However, Bung had said on Wednesday that Sabah Umno was ready to go solo in the state election after GRS announced its electoral pact with PH. He mocked the GRS-PH alliance as a 'panic pact' and said Sabah Umno will not work with 'dishonest and insincere' coalitions. 'An electoral pact must be built on sincerity and integrity, not just seat-sharing and candidate selection,' he said, according to The Borneo Post. A GRS Supreme Council meeting chaired by chief minister Hajiji Noor yesterday confirmed the collaboration with PH. Zahid had earlier reiterated that BN's pact with PH had been 'locked in', indicating that BN and GRS were likely to clash in the election. On Sunday, he urged Sabah Umno not to completely shut the door on potential allies, saying 'there may be friends among enemies'. Bung, who is also the Sabah BN chief, said both Sabah Umno and BN remain 'undisturbed' and are fully prepared for the state election. 'We have faced many bigger challenges. Sabah Umno and BN are 100% prepared for the Sabah election,' he said.

Anwar faces pivotal decision ahead of GE16, says KJ

Former minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that even in straight fights, BN supporters might choose to back PN candidates in some constituencies, especially given the ongoing unease with DAP. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim faces the crucial question of whether to maintain his existing multi-coalition strategy ahead of the next general election (GE16) or pursue a solo route with Pakatan Harapan (PH), says former minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Khairy said that while going solo might allow PH to win a clear mandate in Peninsular Malaysia, securing power in Sabah and Sarawak remained uncertain without wider alliances. 'Anwar's objective, I think, is a second term… This is the time to think about a second term,' Khairy said on last night's episode of Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad's Lebih Masa podcast. 'I don't think he's ready to retire – he's still healthy and has unfinished business to complete in a second term '(But) whether to achieve that objective by joining forces or going solo? If he goes solo, PH can contest alone and might win a clear victory in Peninsular Malaysia.' However, Khairy added that a three-cornered fight in GE16 involving PH, Barisan Nasional (BN), and Perikatan Nasional (PN) would carry immense risks, especially if PH were to clash over seats with BN. Khairy said that even in straight fights, BN supporters might choose to back PN candidates in some constituencies, especially given the ongoing unease with DAP. Meanwhile, PH voters, driven by their opposition to PAS, might be more willing to transfer votes to BN than to PN, said Khairy. He said the solution was closer ties among grassroots members, noting that while party leaders might put up a united front, there was often little to no cooperation between the local branches of PKR and Umno. 'At the grassroots… many times, there are no direct relations so they are like enemies. That's where vote transferability (becomes a problem). There is a lot of work to be done on that,' he said. The Umno-led BN played a crucial role in enabling Anwar to form the unity government in the wake of the 2022 general election, which resulted in a hung parliament. Anwar said last November that the collaboration at the federal level was expected to continue through his current term and extend beyond the next general election, which must be held by early 2028. The four major coalitions that make up the unity government are the Anwar-led PH, BN, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. Last month, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said while there were calls for BN to contest GE16 on its own, the coalition was firm on continuing its alliance with PH.
