My visit to Sebring, Florida after HGTV's "Home Town Takeover"

Axios02-05-2025

I arrived in Sebring on a Tuesday afternoon, on a pilgrimage I didn't realize I was part of until I started chatting with the other folks wandering around the muraled walls and historic buildings of the city's downtown.
Why it matters: We were here for the same reason: to experience what it's like after HGTV unleashes its feel-good renovation machine on an entire town.
The big picture: Also known as "The City on the Circle" for the round park anchoring its downtown district, Sebring, about 80 miles east of Bradenton, starred in season 3 of " Home Town Takeover," which premiered in March.
The show is hosted by Ben and Erin Napier, whose work restoring historic homes in their hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, landed them a show on HGTV. "Home Town" took off, and a decor line, book deals and spinoffs ensued.
The premise of "Home Town Takeover" is to transform a struggling small town into a destination by revamping businesses, homes and community spaces.
State of play: Sebring, nestled among farms and orange groves at least 90 minutes from any major metro area, is known for its international raceway and the annual soda festival that began in 2018.
But since U.S. 27 began siphoning drivers away from the town's historic downtown, the district dwindled from 22 businesses in the 1960s to 11 last year, the Napiers and various community leaders explain in episode 1.
Zoom in: On my weekday visit, The Circle appeared an afterthought no more.
A line spilled out the door at Sophie's Cafe, a local Cuban restaurant featured in the show that opened its second location in a historic former church with the mix of old charm and modern touches the Napiers are famous for.
A steady stream of patrons stopped for root beer (or, in my case, cream soda) floats at Sebring Soda & Ice Cream Works, which in the season premiere underwent a makeover from drab tans and browns to pastels and stripes that make it feel like a vintage drugstore.
And at any given time, a dozen people milled around Circle Park, actually using the cornhole boards, ping pong table, gazebo and tables added to the lawn over the course of the show.
What they're saying:"It's been a steady flow of people from all over the country and even outside the country," Nancy Lombardo, owner of antique and souvenir shop Pieces of the Past, told me.
After struggling with a lack of foot traffic for years, she reopened the day before the show's March 9 premiere. Her Sebring-branded mugs, magnets and more have been flying off the shelves, she said.
I was honestly surprised by the amount of activity for a random weekday afternoon — but I shouldn't have been.
It's in line with the tourism booms experienced by the communities featured in the first two seasons of the show.
Yes, but: Is it sustainable? Walking among the cardboard cutouts of the Napiers and the "Welcome to Sebring, HGTV fans!" signs, it was hard to decouple the city from the HGTV-ification of it all.
Maybe that's the point.
I considered this over a beer at Faded Bistro & Beer Garden, a restaurant nestled in a lush tropical courtyard a few blocks off the "Home Town" buzz on The Circle.
It opened in 2017 and this year got its own taste of national recognition with a USA TODAY award for No. 5 best beer garden in the country.
The bottom line: Sebring isn't on your way to somewhere. It is somewhere — whether the cameras are there or not.

Print Close By Brie Stimson Published June 05, 2025 Ana de Armas says it's "amazing" to be working with Tom Cruise and "surreal" that the movie star would praise her work. "It's very special," de Armas told Access Hollywood at the premiere of her John Wick movie "Ballerina" on Tuesday when asked about him raving about her role in the film. "It's very surreal that an actor like him, like someone like him, likes the movie and my performance and my work, and we're working together now so, yeah, it's pretty, it's really amazing." At the London premiere of "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," Crusie told a reporter: "I just saw the movie. It kicks a--," referring to "Ballerina." "Oh, man, it's right in that tone. Rapper Chocolate MC accused of kidnapping fan who asked for photo in Florida

Cuban rapper Chocolate MC was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a fan at gunpoint after requesting to take a photo with the musician on Tuesday. The fan approached the 'A Veces' singer, whose real name is Yosvanis Sierra Hernandez, outside of a Chavez Distributors grocery store in Opa-locka, Fla. and quickly realized that his request for a quick snap was about to take a terrifying turn. The self-proclaimed 'The King of Reparteros' took the fan into the parking lot of the shopping plaza, 'placed a firearm on the victim's chest and forced him to surrender his vehicle,' according to the arrest report obtained by Local 10 News. 3 Chocolate MC was charged with armed robbery and kidnapping with a weapon. Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office The 34-year-old urban music singer also reportedly tried to rob him. 'Yosvanis Sierra demanded the victim send him money via Zell (sic) and give his phone number to the victim to do so. The victim stated he did not have Zell (sic) and was unable to do the transaction.' When the suspect's attempt to get cash didn't go as planned, the 'Talentazo' performer allegedly forced the fan to 'drive him to several locations over the course of approximately two hours' in the Miami area, the outlet reported, citing police. The hours-long ordeal happened in the Miami area, where most of Sierra Hernandez's Spotify listeners are based, according to data from the streaming platform. 5 best Ana de Armas movies to stream right now

In the 10 years since she made her English-language film debut, Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas has become one of Hollywood's top rising stars, moving from supporting roles to lead parts in blockbusters and awards contenders. Even in her earliest appearances in American films, including Eli Roth's trashy thriller 'Knock Knock' and the rote boxing biopic 'Hands of Stone,' she makes a strong impression with limited screen time. She's gone on to star in big-budget streaming movies like Netflix's 'The Gray Man' (with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling) and Apple TV Plus' 'Ghosted' (with Evans again). Now she's taking her career to the next level as the title character in 'Ballerina,' a spin-off of the hugely popular 'John Wick' movies, hitting theaters June 6. Here are five Ana de Armas movies to check out before watching 'Ballerina." As the seemingly timid nurse to wealthy novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), de Armas is the stealth heroine of writer-director Rian Johnson's clever murder mystery. At first, de Armas' Marta appears overwhelmed by Harlan's obnoxious family members, following his mysterious death. But even when she becomes the target of their suspicions, Marta maintains her integrity and compassion, finding an understanding ally in renowned detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). In a cast full of major stars — including Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and Michael Shannon as Harlan's extended family — de Armas emerges as the most engaging presence, and Marta provides the story's anchor. Craig may have gone on to solve more mysteries as Benoit Blanc, but he's not the only one who makes a lasting impression. Watch on Prime Video The decades-later sequel to sci-fi classic 'Blade Runner' explores the intersection between humanity and artificial life, placing de Armas in the middle of that divide as Joi, the holographic girlfriend of android protagonist K (Ryan Gosling). K is a blade runner, which means that he hunts down his fellow replicants when they go rogue. His latest assignment puts him on the trail of a conspiracy, which leads him to former blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). Joi functions as a sounding board and support system for K, but she's not just a glorified assistant. She has needs and desires of her own, even if she can never physically touch her lover. One of the movie's most affecting scenes involves Joi employing a replicant surrogate so that she and K can have sex, and de Armas beautifully expresses that sense of longing and frustration. Rent/buy at Apple or Amazon De Armas shows up for just one extended sequence in Daniel Craig's final movie as superspy James Bond, but she gives the somewhat bloated movie a jolt of energy and leaves the audience wanting more once she disappears. She plays Paloma, a rookie CIA agent sent by Bond's American ally Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) to aid him on a mission in Cuba. While Bond is suave, confident and sometimes overly serious, Paloma is exuberant and a bit nervous, but she proves to be resourceful when the moment arises. De Armas shows off her charisma and her skills as an action hero, and Paloma looks like a prime candidate for a potential spin-off. That probably won't happen in the current Bond era, but 'No Time to Die' offers a glimpse into de Armas' future ability to carry an action franchise. Rent/buy at Apple or Amazon De Armas brings nuance and heartfelt emotion to a fairly thankless role in director Todd Phillips' fact-based dramedy about a pair of friends who become unlikely international arms dealers. De Armas plays the concerned wife of David Packouz (Miles Teller), an aimless dreamer who seems to find his calling when he reconnects with his childhood best friend Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) and is introduced to the shady world of contract bidding for the Department of Defense. Although de Armas' Iz spends most of her time sitting at home worrying about David's safety and getting angry about his lies, de Armas effectively conveys the anguish and frustration of Iz's position, grounding the story in a familiar dynamic. As David and Efraim travel around the world, getting themselves deeper and deeper into trouble, Iz provides a sensible, relatable counterpoint to the mayhem. Rent/buy at Apple or Amazon Director Andrew Dominik's fictionalized biopic about Marilyn Monroe is a bit of a disastrous mess, with bold stylistic experiments that mostly don't pay off. One aspect that Dominik gets right, though, is casting de Armas as the troubled movie star, whose beauty most likely prevented her from getting the respect she sought as an artist. Although the filmmaker puts his protagonist through nearly as much torture as she endured from the actual people in her life, de Armas maintains her poise and vulnerability in a sensitive and empathetic performance that earned her an Oscar nomination. The movie is often tough to watch, but it shows the depth and range that de Armas can bring to a role — which she deserves to showcase in a project more worthy of her talents. Watch on Netflix
