OPEN// Egypt urges swift Gaza ceasefire as death toll tops 56,000
CAIRO, June 28 (MENA) – Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Saturday that Egypt is intensifying efforts to reach a swift ceasefire agreement in Gaza, stressing the urgency of halting the bloodshed among Palestinian civilians.
"We are actively working towards a ceasefire to stop the bloodshed of innocent Palestinians," Abdelatty told a joint press conference in Cairo with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger.
His remarks came in response to a question from the Middle East News Agency (MENA) regarding US President Donald Trump's recent comments suggesting a potential ceasefire agreement in Gaza could be reached as early as this week.
Abdelatty said the number of Palestinians killed has surpassed 56,000, with women and children accounting for around 70% of the death toll. "Sadly, killing has become senseless – daily atrocities are being committed in full view of the international community, with no meaningful action to stop them," he said.
He called for a more active US role, saying that trilateral efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have recently intensified in hopes of building on momentum generated by the ceasefire in the Iran file, and shifting focus back to Gaza. "Unfortunately, Israeli policies continue to pursue daily killings that are illogical and futile – it has become killing for the sake of killing," he said.
Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to ending the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, including addressing the use of starvation as a form of collective punishment. He expressed hope that the current diplomatic push would lead to an immediate ceasefire, paving the way for Egypt to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza as part of the relevant Arab-Islamic plan.

However, the cumulative financial burden of military operations and heightened security costs is increasingly influencing domestic pricing structures. Traditionally, fuel prices in Israel are calculated at the end of each month based on the average oil prices in the Mediterranean market and the exchange rate between the shekel and the U.S. dollar—currently 3.38 shekels to the dollar. The final price also includes marketing fees, excise tax, and value-added tax (VAT). Inflation Pressures Mount The economic impact of the Iran-Israel conflict continues to ripple through the Israeli economy. Following the outbreak of war in Gaza earlier this year, the Israeli government raised VAT from 17% to 18%, contributing to an upward trend in consumer prices and inflation. 'The inflation crisis is not over,' said Danny Yardeni, Head of Nostro Management at Bank Leumi. 'There's pressure on rents due to the war, and not all airlines have resumed operations. But I believe the end of the crisis has reduced some of the uncertainty.' Yardeni added that the private consumption sector has weakened, with many businesses temporarily closed and households spending less amid the state of emergency. The government, for its part, has been forced to allocate significant funds for compensation, both for homeowners affected by missile strikes and for businesses disrupted during the hostilities. Egyptian FM: No Mideast Stability Without Palestinian Solution
H-Tayea Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized that Egypt continues to work tirelessly to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, stating that Cairo is engaged in coordinated efforts with Qatar and the United States to halt what he described as 'ongoing crimes and systematic starvation' in the Gaza Strip. These efforts have been sustained for over 21 months since the events of October 7, 2023. In an interview on the ON TV program Kelma Akhira, Abdelatty noted that the current geopolitical context is more favorable for reaching an agreement on Gaza, citing increased recognition among key international actors, especially the US, of Egypt's comprehensive vision. He stressed that peace and stability in the Middle East are impossible without addressing the root of the conflict: the Israeli-Palestinian issue, with the Palestinian cause at its core. 'The message is now clear to Israel: there will be no security or stability without resolving the Palestinian issue and achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace,' he stated, adding that this stance is increasingly echoed by the European Union and other global powers. Responding to a question on recent remarks by US President Donald Trump about a potential Gaza agreement in the coming weeks, Abdel Aaty affirmed the seriousness of American engagement. 'This is true. The January 19 ceasefire agreement in Gaza would not have been possible without the intervention of the current US administration,' he said, pointing to Washington's influence and Egypt's desire for further American involvement. 2 Injured After Explosion Destroys Homes in Philadelphia
Israa Farhan A powerful explosion early Sunday morning in northern Philadelphia killed one person and injured two others, causing significant structural damage to several homes, according to US authorities. The Philadelphia Fire Department responded to an emergency call just before 5:00 AM, reporting a suspected explosion in a residential area.
