Nicola Coughlan raises more than £100,000 for trans charity after gender ruling

Yahoo19-04-2025
Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan has helped raise more than £100,000 for a trans rights charity following the Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of a woman.
The judgment by the UK's highest court said that the terms 'woman' and 'sex' in the 2010 Equality Act 'refer to a biological woman and biological sex'.
Following the news on Wednesday, the Irish star said she was 'completely horrified' and 'disgusted' by the ruling and said she would match donations up to £10,000 to transgender charity Not A Phase.
The fundraiser has since raised £103,018, with a revised target of £110,000.
On Friday, the Derry Girls and Barbie actress, 38, who has long supported the LGBT+ community, shared the donation page on her Instagram story, saying: 'Nearly 100k thanks to you kind and brilliant people so delighted for Not A Phase'.
The fundraiser description reads: 'Allies of the Trans and Non Binary Community time to come together.'
The Supreme Court ruling means that transgender women with a gender recognition certificate (GRC) can be excluded from single-sex spaces if 'proportionate'.
In response to the ruling, thousands of trans rights protesters gathered in central London on Saturday including groups such as Trans Kids Deserve Better, Pride in Labour, the Front for the Liberation of Intersex Non-binary and Transgender people (Flint) and TransActual.
A rally and march organised by Resisting Transphobia is also taking place in Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Pratt shares rare photos marking son Jack's milestone 13th birthday

Chris Pratt celebrated a milestone birthday with his oldest child. Pratt, 46, reveled in the fact that he now has a teenager at home as he honored his son Jack on his 13th birthday. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" star shared a rare gallery of fun times on social media Sunday to mark Jack's big day. Pratt and his ex-wife, Anna Faris, welcomed Jack in 2012 and have co-parented since their split in 2017. "I have a teenager???" Pratt wrote over a collection of images shared to his Instagram stories. "Jack, I can't believe you are 13 today. I've watched you grow into such an incredible young man, and am truly proud of the person you are becoming." Chris and Jack were pictured wearing matching Dodgers jerseys in one snap, before swapping sports and celebrating as Detroit Lions fans. Jack tried his hand at feeding a baby cow in another shot before finding a groove while welding. Pratt ended the shout-out with, "I love you! Jesus is King!" During a March appearance on "Fox & Friends," Pratt explained that his stance on faith changed when Jack was brought into this world. Back in 2012, Jack was born seven weeks early and only weighed 3 pounds, 10 ounces. Pratt recalled the life-altering moment in which he had to make "deals with God" to save his son. "The most impactful moment was when my son was born. He was born early and had some health scares, and in that moment, I really made some deals with God, as you do when you're praying, and I felt like if you save my son, I will give you everything." "I'll give you my life. I'll give you my platform. I won't be ashamed to talk to you or talk about you. And he did save my son, and I've been trying to make good on that promise ever since," Pratt said. Pratt and Faris were married for eight years before their divorce was finalized in 2018. The "Parks & Recreation" actor went on to marry Katherine Schwarzenegger in June 2019 after meeting at church. Schwarzenegger's mom, Maria Shriver, helped set up the pair, and they eventually wed during a ceremony held in Montecito, California. The couple welcomed their first daughter, Lyla, in August 2020. Their second daughter, Eloise, was born in May 2022, and the couple welcomed son Ford in November.

'Skibidi' and 'tradwife' among words added to Cambridge Dictionary

"Skibidi", "tradwife" and other slang terms popularised on social media are among thousands of new words to be added to the Cambridge Dictionary this year. Skibidi is a gibberish term coined by the creator of a viral animated video series on YouTube, while tradwife is a shortening of "traditional wife" – a married mother who cooks, cleans and posts on social media. More than 6,000 new words are included, including those that relate to remote working and tech giants. "Internet culture is changing the English language and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the dictionary," said lexical programme manager Colin McIntosh. Skibidi is defined in the dictionary as "a word that can have different meanings such as 'cool' or 'bad', or can be used with no real meaning as a joke". An example of its use is "What the skibidi are you doing?" Reality TV star Kim Kardashian revealed her familiarity with the phrase when she posted a video on Instagram showing a necklace engraved with "skibidi toilet" – the name of the YouTube series. As well as new phrases, some shortened versions of existing terms have been added, including "delulu" – a play on the word "delusional", with a similar definition: "believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to". An increase in remote working since the pandemic has seen "mouse jiggler" – a device or piece of software used to make it seem as though you are working when you are not – gain its place in the dictionary. Some composite terms such as "broligarchy" have also been added. Merging "bro" and "oligarchy", it means "a small group of men, especially men owning or involved in a technology business, who are extremely rich and powerful, and who have or want political influence". It was used to describe tech leaders Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg attending Donald Trump's inauguration in January. Follow Cambridgeshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.
